Derek Wolfe - DL - Broncos

Broncos LE Derek Wolfe is taking on a leadership role in his second season with the team.
Both Champ Bailey and Von Miller singled out Wolfe as an emerging team leader, and predict he'll "take the next step," as a player this season. Wolfe led Denver's defensive line in snaps as a rookie, recording 40 tackles, six sacks and batted down two passes. There's been nothing but positive buzz surrounding Wolfe this offseason, and it's expected he'll improve upon those numbers in year two.

Ndamukong Suh - DL - Lions

Lions DT Ndamukong Suh would cost roughly $25.7 million to franchise tag as a free agent in 2015.
The final year of Suh's rookie deal in 2014 carries a hard-to-believe $21.4 million cap number, making him all but impossible to franchise tag when he reaches free agency. It means the Lions will have to get Suh locked up before the end of next season if they want to prevent him from reaching the open market. A dominant — if mercurial — force, the Lions should make every effort to keep the No. 2 overall pick of the 2010 draft.

No we had this yrs racial draft. The whites wanted half mexican jessica Alba named to the white team. The mexicans would only do it if we took Zimmerman also. Oh well she is hot and totally worth it. Hopefully the whitey Zimmerman gets off now.

He's played three years. His year last year wasn't bad bust certainly not worth what he's getting:

Suh has had one year with double digit sacks and that was his rookie year when he had 10 sacks. It will definitely be interesting to see if Watt can get double digit sacks his 3rd year, if so, then he is the best DT in the NFL. If not, it may prove he's coming back down to earth.

Seems like trending is so critical in contract negotiations. Take the case of Joe "What Have You Done for Me Lately" Flacco. He went from one year ago thinking he'd have to test the free agent market, to becoming the highest paid ever.

Closer to home example, Ryan Clady. A year ago coming off a down season, and questions about his value. Broncos best offer was 5/$50m, $28 guaranteed. He turned that down, kept insisting on Joe Thomas money. Bring in a classic pocket passing QB, and boom - he's trending up, 1st team All-Pro. Now it looks like he might sign before the Monday deadline ... we'll find out the numbers then, I'm thinking they'll be higher than 5/50, 28.

All of Wolfe's sacks came at DT, and he finished the season was a sack in the last 3 games straight.

Derek Wolfe has remarked this offseason how he is going to enjoy not having to sit back and be the "spotter" as much. He also said he really enjoys switching positions on the line to keep the OL off guard.

Lions waive RB Jahvid Best
By Brian Murphy, Wednesday, July 17, 2013 4:33:23 PM CDT

Jahvid Best @J4hvidbest has not played in an NFL game since October 2011 due to issues caused by numerous concussions. Although he remained on the Lions' roster, he probably won't play again. The Lions announced Wednesday they have finally cut the former first-round pick.

"Jahvid is as fine a person and professional as I have ever worked with," Lions Executive Vice President of Football Operations and General Manager Martin Mayhew said. "He was the consummate teammate and always did everything asked of him. We wish Jahvid the very best in all his future endeavors and have no doubt that he will be successful in whatever path he chooses."

Best offered his own statement: "I want to thank the Detroit Lions organization for drafting me and giving me an opportunity to fulfill my dream and play in the National Football League. My time as a member of the Lions was a very special time in my life. My teammates, the members of the organization, the Lions fans and the people of Detroit will hold a special place in my heart. I'll always be a Lion."

Fisher will catch $10 million within five days
Posted by Mike Florio on July 26, 2013, 3:02 PM EDT

In the end, the first pick in the 2013 draft cried uncle on the issue of offsets. In exchange, he’s getting a ton of money up front.

Per a league source with knowledge of the deal, Eric Fisher will receiver $10 million in the next five days from the Chiefs under the contract he signed within the past hour.

(Only George Clooney can get $10 million faster than that.)

Not many teams have a habit of turning over that much cash that quickly. Sure, players “earn” their signing bonuses upon signing the contracts. But it’s one thing to sign the paper and quite another thing to collect it.

The $10 million to be paid in five days is part of a $14.518 million signing bonus. The rest of the money will be paid in full by February 15, 2014.

Fisher also has minimum base salaries ($405,000 in 2013, $495,000 in 2014, $585,000 in 2015, and $675,000 in 2016) along with training-camp roster bonuses of $918,659 in 2014, $1,837,318 in 2015, and $2,755,977 in 2016.

The deal is fully guaranteed for injury, skill, and salary cap. And while it includes offset language, first-round offensive linemen rarely if ever are cut within four years. (Even Tony Mandarich, the biggest offensive lineman bust in league history, made it three years with the Packers.)

So Fisher traded a term that most likely will be irrelevant for him in exchange for $10 million now, $4.518 million soon, and the ability to double dip in the highly unlikely event he gets cut at some point between the start of training camp and the start of a regular season.

The advantage there is if he busts the Chiefs will have bled out the lion's share of the money.

why is this an advantage?

Well it isn't in the grand scheme, but if after a couple years theRev is wrong and Fisher blows, they can cut him and the cap hit won't be very bad. It will mean they used a lot of money on him, which obviously would be bad, but they made their bed and they're laying in it.

My question is injuries. What if Fisher has injury problems that really limit his playing time? KC is out $10m regardless and another $4m in February. Whoever Fisher's agent is, he should get a bonus for raping KC.

Generally, yes. They didn't get all of what they wanted, but this was the trade off - a huge check up front. These little nuances are the new things the agents are doing to recoup some of that money. This is why despite the salary slotting that rookie contracts still get hung up in the preseason.

Not good for the Bears (Bad News Bears?), imo. Of all the coaching changes in the NFL this off-season, I thought this was an obvious blunder. Lovie may have his faults, but the players played hard for him, and he usually had a good to great defense along with great special teams.

There was a reason Trestman bounced around the league as the next "promising OC" that never quite had a great run. IIRC, he succeeded Shanny at SF after Shanny won a ring and came here.

Despite the talent he inherited, it seemed he could never develop a running game. He got blown out after a couple of years. He is a poor-man's Mike Martz. Not good, because a rich-man's Mike Martz isn't all that good either.

He's expected to report to Jets training camp in Cortland, N.Y., on Monday, according to the New York Daily News, and his four-year, $12.66 million rookie deal is fully guaranteed, ESPNNewYork.com reported.

Percy Harvin - WR - Seahawks

Percy Harvin tweeted Tuesday evening that his hip injury will require surgery.
Harvin hinted the operation will be season-ending, but NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports he could return in 3-4 months. PFT reports he'll be back "late in the season." At the very least, Harvin is staring at a six-game stay on the PUP list. An official timeline should emerge in short order. It's obviously a devastating blow for the Seahawks, who were counting on Harvin to add a new dimension to their well-oiled read option attack. As it is, Golden Tate will revert to being Seattle's primary playmaker at receiver, while the onus will be on Sidney Rice (knee) to stay healthy. Between his signing bonus and salary, Harvin is bringing home $14.5 million this season after the Seahawks surrendered three draft picks — including their 2013 first-rounder — for his services. Where Harvin's "injury prone" label was once unwarranted, that is no longer the case.

Sidney Rice in Switzerland for knee treatment

ESPN Seattle's Liz Mathews reports Sidney Rice is in Switzerland "getting some sort of knee treatment."
Oh. The word comes straight from coach Pete Carroll, who insists that Rice will not only be ready for Week 1, but the preseason. Carroll calls the procedure "preventative," and expects Rice back in Seattle before the end of the week. Although the news comes completely out of nowhere — Rice's status was never updated after he was spotted in crutches following Seattle's Divisional Round loss — it's hardly a surprise considering his injury history. Despite Carroll's assurance, we'd consider Rice questionable for Week 1 at the moment. With the Seahawks also awaiting word on Percy Harvin's (hip) status, receiver is suddenly a question mark. Rice should still be considered a high-risk, low-ceiling WR3.

Britton Colquitt - P - Broncos

The Broncos and P Britton Colquitt have had contract extension discussions.
Colquitt, 28, was re-signed to a one-year, $1.323 million contract as a restricted free agent earlier in the offseason, but the two sides have long been interested in a long-term deal. He was third in net punting average (42.1) last season.

Fins LT Martin is getting 'owned' in practice

According to the Miami Herald, Dolphins LT Jonathan Martin has been "owned" by second-year RE Olivier Vernon "since the opening of camp."
Martin was beaten for three sacks by Vernon in Thursday's practice, and two more sacks by Dion Jordan on Wednesday. Per reporter Armando Salguero, Martin's pass pro is "looking problematic at this point." The Dolphins have known this was a potential issue all along, pursuing Branden Albert in trade talks before the draft. Now, they may be stuck with Martin on Ryan Tannehill's blindside.

I wonder if they will explore trading for Albert now.

For all the good moves the FO did to catch the Pats, they dropped the ball here. I think it will cost them a legit chance at the division.

typical east coast bias. There's a good chance the Raven's defense will be better but then again, the loss of so many leaders might hamper the growth. It does take less time for a defense to gel than an offense so I can see the ratbirds defense being a top 10 defense. The question is how will the offense do?

His quitting on the team forced Shanny to draft Cutler.

Read "A few seconds of panic"

Shanny wanted him to be more of a leader and participate in the non-mandatory team drills. Plummer didn't want to then got butt hurt when Cutler was drafted to push him.

Plummer of all QB's we had needed to work harder, especially since teams took away his bread and butter after Pitt showed the template to beat him by taking away the boot.

Shanny drafted Cutler because he wasn't happy with Plummer, that appears to be what happened. Why Shanny didn't like Plummer is speculation on our part but I do think it had something to do with Plummer's lone ranger attitude in that he didn't worship the ground Shanny walked on and Plummer kind of did things his own way.

For all the great things to like about Plummer, he did have an issue authority and I think he was a little burned out on the NFL. I would have loved it if he had put more time into being the Broncos QB, that is, the hardest worker on the team and all that (ala Manning) but that just ain't who he is. 49ers second-round DE Tank Carradine (ACL surgery) is not close to practicing.
Carradine opened camp on the active/PUP list, and may stay on reserve/PUP into the season. Reserve/PUP would cost him six games.

LOL Overreact much? 49'ers are known for benching rookies. LaMichael James was a healthy scratch for the entire 2012 season too. I'm sure they'll be just fine with Aldon Smith and Ahmad Brooks at OLB to start the season. Broncos don't have that luxury. The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports Eddie Lacy was the "standout" player at Saturday night's intrasquad scrimmage.
(The same player who was deemed "fat" and "out of shape" by Twitter rumor mongers earlier in the week.) Lacy broke off consecutive runs of 7, 16, 19, 4, 8 and 4 yards. RBs coach Alex Van Pelt downplayed Lacy's allegedly-suspect conditioning after the scrimmage, saying, "I think it's just him." James Starks got the start, Lacy was next, Johnathan Franklin was third, and Alex Green was fourth. Lacy racked up 65 yards on eight carries and played a team-high 17 snaps, one ahead of Starks and two more than Franklin. The Packers open the preseason Friday night against Arizona. Lacy remains the clear favorite to be Green Bay's lead dog.

Not bad for a fat man. :giggle:

Shanny felt Plummer was not going to be able to take the Broncos the the SB and win so He saw a chance to get what he believed to be a franchise QB ( without even as much as having to ever meant him let alone interviewed him) and did. Shanny could not wait to get his new toy (Savior) on to the field.

Jake had always played the game of football the only way he knew how, with heart, when he realized he had become a place holder that April day Cutler (curse him) donned the Broncos cap Jake was never again the same player, Shanny's move took Jake's heart out of the game and he was done as the fun gutsy player that many of us enjoyed watching. Many including Shanny used Plummer's disheartened, place keeper's play as a reason to insert his toy 8 games in his rookie season. Plummer in his mind retired from the game he loved that day it just took awhile to file the paperwork.

I admire Jake Plummer the man.

a George Plimpton wanna be says Jake quit on the team?

Jake had led the Broncos to 3 consecutive playoff appearances, was 32-11 (.744 winning %) as a starter for the Broncos prior to the 2006 NFL Draft, had arguably his best season and helped the Broncos to an AFCCG appearance.

Now imagine you're Jake sitting at home and you hear "with the 11th pick of the 2006 NFL draft the Denver Broncos select Jay Cutler, QB, Vanderbilt" and tell me that wouldn't give you a fricking attitude?

Imagine going into work tomorrow morning and finding out that your replacment was just hired by your supervisor, and every mistake you make from that moment forward will be amplified while your past contributions to the company's success are evidently not appreciated.

I knew you was going to bring that up. He was asked when he got to Chicago. What did you expect him to say? And it was after a bunch of aholes believed Mcspygate I &II.

meh, it happens....

people get traded and are hurt by it and lash out. people get cut and do likewise....people get dissed because they were by passed by this team or that team in the draft....it is what it is.

Jake let his emotions get away from him and flipped off a fan or three.....hell even Elway lashed out at living under a microscope in Denver. no big deal...

"oww my foot!.....I think i hurt it twelve months ago!"

Dude has turned into a giant soft vagina since he went to the Jets.

The Steelers have an uncanny knack of letting the players go at the right time....not always, but they get it right most of the time.

Injuries are a major element in who makes the post-season. These three games are the most terrifying for me because they inevitably mean someone is going to be lost for the season. You just pray it's someone replaceable.

Jake Ballard - TE - Patriots

Jake Ballard (knee) was unable to participate in Saturday's intra-squad scrimmage.
Per the Providence Journal, Ballard is "having problems" as he returns from his ACL reconstruction and microfracture surgery. After looking strong in the first couple days after coming off active/PUP, he's "slowed" and "not moved as well." Ballard is getting outplayed by intriguing UDFA Zach Sudfeld and his roster spot is in jeopardy.

It doesn't sound like he is going to make it on the team. Gronk is expected to miss the first 6 games of the year as well. McD has his work cut out for him this year.

mCd will do whatever Belly tells him to do.

I expect them to run Riddley a ton this year. They may be winning less 52-3 games. They will still win the division because they have the Jets and Bills in there. Maybe Miami can make a run at it.

They have been having Vereen line up in different positions this offseason. He is taking over the Woodhead role from the sounds of it.

Tyrann Mathieu - DB - Cardinals

One NFL scout told FOX Sports Arizona rookie DB Tyrann Mathieu is already "pound-for-pound" the Cardinals' best football player.
An offensive assistant added that "No. 32 (Mathieu's number) is going to change the team." Per beat writer Ron Wolfley, Mathieu's quick development has been "nothing short of stunning," and he's done it while learning four positions: Outside corner, slot corner, safety, and special teamer. Mathieu is truly a stud, and will make himself impossible for the Cardinals to keep off the field.

Nice to hear he is getting his life back together.

ince Young - QB - Packers

Packers signed QB Vince Young to a one-year contract.
Thankfully, the Graham Harrell era is over. Young, 30, brings to Green Bay 50 career starts with a 31-19 record, 46:51 TD-to-INT ratio, and 5.2 YPC average as a scrambler. No matter your thoughts on Young, he stands a far better chance than Harrell of keeping the Packers' offense competitive in the event of an Aaron Rodgers injury, which unfortunately became more likely when LT Bryan Bulaga tore his ACL over the weekend. In a high-powered Packers offense, Young will offer some fantasy upside as a reserve in two-QB leagues and possible back-end QB1 if Rodgers missed time. Despite headcase tendencies, Young is a dual-threat quarterback with functional accuracy and game-breaking run skills.

Agreed.

I do think the temptation while living in CO would have been too much, though.

It's in a good position w/a top rate coach. I think he'll excel in 'zona.

In other news playing spin the bottle in the locker room will result in a fine for violating the locker room moral code. Towel snapping and naked butt slapping will result in a warning. Three warnings will result in a fine.

This is not a new rule: The 2012 official playing rules listed examples of prohibited acts that will result in unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, saying, “These acts include but are not limited to: sack dances; home run swing; incredible hulk; spiking the ball; throwing or shoving the ball; pointing; pointing the ball; verbal taunting; military salute; standing over an opponent (prolonged and with provocation; or dancing.”

^from the quoted link
so pretty much ANY celebration can be a 15 yard penalty now?
too many judgment calls in the league already imo.

No one does that anymore. And I think scoring celebrations are still ok. This is for people dancing around after a non scoring play.
