Ha! Let me warm my hands on this picture.

The Repugs are going cannibal on each other.

At his Northern Virginia headquarters, some McCain aides are already speaking of the campaign in the past tense. Morale, even among some of the heartiest and most loyal staffers, has plummeted. And many past and current McCain advisers are warring with each other over who led the candidate astray.

One well-connected Republican in the private sector was shocked to get calls and resumes in the past few days from what he said were senior McCain aides — a breach of custom for even the worst-off campaigns. ;D

“If you really want to see what ‘going negative’ is in politics, just watch the back-stabbing and blame game that we’re starting to see,” said Mark McKinnon, the ad man who left the campaign after McCain wrapped up the GOP primary. “And there’s one common theme: Everyone who wasn’t part of the campaign could have done better.”

“The cake is baked,” agreed a former McCain strategist. “We’re entering the finger-pointing and positioning-for-history part of the campaign. It’s every man for himself now.”
Ouch!

Dan Schnur, a McCain communications adviser during his 2000 run and now a political analyst at the University of Southern California, said McCain should step in to halt the defeatism and self-serving leaks — an epidemic of incontinence — on his own team.

I really don't think it's fair to use the word "incontinence" when you're talking about McCain. Ha!

"You have half of the campaign saying Ayers is a major issue, and then the candidate out there saying he doesn’t care about a washed-up terrorist. You have McCain one day echoing Milton Friedman and the next day echoing FDR.”
Yikes!

McCain Adviser Endorses Obama

The Wall Street Journal today rounds up the horde of prominent Republicans jumping ship to Barack Obama. Now one of John McCain's actual advisers has switched sides:

Charles Fried, a professor at Harvard Law School, has long been one of the most important conservative thinkers in the United States. Under President Reagan, he served, with great distinction, as Solicitor General of the United States. Since then, he has been prominently associated with several Republican leaders and candidates, most recently John McCain, for whom he expressed his enthusiastic support in January.

This week, Fried announced that he has voted for Obama-Biden by absentee ballot. In his letter to Trevor Potter, the General Counsel to the McCain-Palin campaign, he asked that his name be removed from the several campaign-related committees on which he serves. In that letter, he said that chief among the reasons for his decision "is the choice of Sarah Palin at a time of deep national crisis."

TPM has the press releases touting Fried's presence on the McCain campaign.

Republican Former Mass. Governor Endorses Obama
Former Massachusetts Gov. William Weld joined other prominent Republicans endorsing Obama over GOP nominee John McCain in the campaign's final weeks

Former Massachusetts Gov. William Weld, a Republican, endorsed Democrat Barack Obama for president on Friday, citing the senator's steady leadership, good judgment and ability to unify Democrats, Republicans and independents.

"Sen. Obama is a once-in-a-lifetime candidate who will transform our politics and restore America's standing in the world," Weld said in a statement.

"We need a president who will lead based on our common values and Sen. Obama demonstrates an ability to unite and inspire. Throughout this campaign I've watched his steady leadership through trying times and I'm confident he is the best candidate to move our country forward," he said.

Weld joined other prominent Republicans endorsing Obama over GOP nominee John McCain in the campaign's final weeks, including former Secretary of State Colin Powell, former Minnesota Gov. Arne Carlson and Scott McClellan, former press secretary to President Bush.

Last year, Weld came to New Hampshire to campaign for another former Massachusetts governor, Republican Mitt Romney, who ended his bid for the presidential nomination in February.

Weld was governor of Massachusetts from 1991 to 1997. Before that, he was U.S. attorney for Massachusetts under President Reagan and was later led the criminal division of the Justice Department.

Scott McClellan, President Bush's former press secretary, announced Thursday that he is endorsing Barack Obama for president.

McClellan is the second former Bush administration official this week to come out in support of the Democratic presidential candidate.
Former Secretary of State Colin L. Powell announced his endorsement last weekend.

Sort of ironic that the stock market crash wiped out the swift-boaters.
Maybe there is such a thing as karma.

“Donors just weren’t willing to give the money,” explains LaCivita.
“They were hurt badly in the market crash and they were always
concerned about how McCain would react.”

The timing of the financial crisis couldn’t have been worse for Republicans.
When Lehman Brothers went under on September 15, McCain was tied or
in the margin of error in national polls. But when his poll numbers fell along
with the stock market, wealthy conservatives saw little reason to invest
their shrunken holdings on what was far from a sure thing.

“Republican donors at the end of day aren’t stupid,” said another Republican
familiar with third-party activities this cycle. “They’re not going to throw
good money after bad news.”

These poor GOP bastards ... the party is definitely over for them :~ohyah!:

Funny story ... I was walking downtown here a couple afternoons ago, and there was a small group of Dave Reichert guys closing up their little stand where they were passing out flyers (a la Lyndon LaRouche).

Anyway, Dave Reichert is the prototype Bush Cowboy-Congressman, the worst kind of lock-step GOP lemming. Forget McCain's "90%", Reichert is a 100-percenter Busher. He beat Democrat Darcy Burner by a very small margin in 2006, but trails her now by 6-8% (she is pretty cute btw).

So I strike up a conversation with these guys, "Burner is really tying your guy to Bush in the TV ads, huh?" One guy shoots back, "we're all done here for today." But of course I don't let it end there, "you guys have any examples where Reichert has voted outside the GOP?" The younger guy spins around and snaps, "WE'RE FINISHED HERE FOR TODAY!"

I'm kinda reminded of what happened to the Dems in 1980 and 1984. Totally crushed to goo.

Then they shaped up, tossed aside the McGovern/Carter/Kennedy era, picked Bill Clinton, and got the WH back. 'Course, he kinda screwed up in his 1st couple years by tacking too far left and handed Congress to the GOP for the rest of his Presidency, but he proved that even Dems can learn from their mistakes.

Man, you are right on board with more Washington State politics there. Our State Supreme Court six weeks ago okayed Republican gubernatorial challenger Dino Rossi to put "GOP" on the ballot instead of "Republican."

Any of you guys remember the Dino Rossi vs. Christine Gregoire Washington governor race in 2004? Made Bush-Gore look like a landslide. Three recounts, the second of which had Gregoire leading - state wide - by 23 votes. That's "twenty-three" votes. The difference in the last recount was just over 100 and she won.

Now they're too close to call again. Might wanna watch that one on the 4th.

I'll tell you 'how so,' he meant the overall picture. That's just the Reagan-Mondale map. The House of Representatives was still Democrat-controlled, remember? Tip O'Neill Speaker of the House?

What we're talking about here is a tsunami SO huge, that even a GOP backlash tsunami in 2010 won't be able to give them back either chamber of Congress ... the majorities will be too great this time.

No sir, this is a near-guaranteed Democrat WH and bi-cameral majority until at least 2012. Get used to it.
