View Full Version : Mock w/ FA signing
OK, again, Im a big proponent of signing either Peppers or Suggs and possibly trading Dumervil...but Ill assume we keep him and hold true to our current draft picks.
1. Aaron Curry, Wake Forest, ILB/OLB, can play two LB positions and this flexibility helps when in a state of flux between 3-4 and 4-3...he weighs about 250
2. Patrick Chung, Oregon, S, can thump and play the ball...a lot to like.
3. Vance Walker, GT, DT,
4. David Bruton, ND, S, Ballhawk
5. Tony Carter, FSU, CB
5. Ramses Barden, Cal Poly, WR
6. Jamaal Westerman, Rutgers, DE
7. Brandon Tate, UNC, WR
7. Jarvis Richards, Youngstown St., CB

I like that draft, Vance Walker is a little too much of a flavor of the month pick for me, but Curry and Chung are bona fide playmakers who would really help our D.
Rather than Walker I would like to see a big DE, remember that Powell will be ready next season and should provide some good early down rotation for our DTs.

Thanks for your feedback. Well, I took the approach of emphasizing improving every level...even if its depth. And since I took LB and S in Rd 1-2, DL was next. And at that pick, Vance Walker is the most appealing. I also toyed with Antonio Appleby there and that could make a nice pick but when I thought about it, I was hopeful that Woodyard could emerge next year. I think Walker is a good player and the situation with Robertson's knees is such that they are not bad enough to pick DT in Rd 1-2 but we definitely need to draft with his future in mind.

if we could get Curry and Chung in rounds 1 and 2 i would be beyond happy.
i just wish we could also get a good RB in the draft, but with this defense i think we might have to stand with who we have now and go all defense in the draft.

Heres the thing: if we sign Peppers or Suggs as I mentioned, then we could possibly trade Dumervil, who I think is worth a 2nd. He has 21 sacks in his first 2 seasons. That kind of production is worth a second.
Our problem is that our defense isnt such that we can afford two DEs that are not so strong at the run...but Peppers and Suggs are considerably better against the run and should allow Moss and Crowder on the field more. So, I think Dumervil could net us a RB possibly even though Im not sold on getting rid of him.

Smooth draft. If it went that way, DEN would be vastly improved.
Curry and Chung would be starters day 1

Spikes is a good or even a great player. Id rather have him over Laurinaitis anyday. But Curry gives us the flexibility of playing him as a Sam or a Mike. You cant go wrong with either but Currys flexibility considering our alternating to the 3-4 enhances his appeal.

The problem with getting value for Dumervil is the fact the majority of NFL HC's think he's nothing more than a situational pass rusher and in today's NFL how valuable is a situational player???

We need to keep Elvis and also add a starting caliber DE.
Elvis could be so much more useful to this team if we could use him on passing downs only. Keep him fresh and ready to attack the QB every snap he's out there.
I just don't see us getting enough for Doom to justify trading away our only established pass-rush threat.
If we pick a LB in Round 1 it needs to be the best out and out MIKE available. Keep the 3-4 as a pass-rush package only.
I love the picks for defense, but don't see us taking two wr's with all of our other needs
I'm going to get blasted for this and it will depend on who is available and where we pick but i'm warming to the idea of Lesean McCoy with our 1st round pick if he comes out. I just see the guy fitting very well with our offense compared to his rushing style and he is a player very much on the rise.
I'm torn about our squad. We could draft heavy on the defensive side which we need or we could continue to put players around Cutler to help him develop and become more effective. I'm very impressed with all the help Indy gave Peyton Manning, year after year, despite the short comings of their defense. Eventually that helped them to multiple 13-3 records, along with a super bowl win.
This opinion depends largely on Ryan Torain and what he does over the remainder of the year. I hope he makes this draft an easy decision for us. I know on the surface that he has multiple injury issues throughout his time in college and now the pro's. We could just draft a potential game breaker who could be the best HB in this offense since Clinton Portis. It cannot be argued that there currently is a hole in our offense and on our roster at HB.

I was screaming for Mendenhall or Stewart last year but I cant complain about Clady or Royal. I Hope we get one of the better Dline FA's I really want Haynsworth. There are some safetys available but I am on the chung in the second bandwagon and have promoted a draft of mays/chung for one and two. I still think this would be sound if we were able to plug the MIKE with Crowder or Peterson Via FA. Looking at the draft it looks like there are 3-4 first round DE's and maybe 1-2 DT's and while it bugs me that we havent used hardly any high picks on the line consistantly I am not sure this is the year to start. So if we can get a few FA's a Mike, some DL help and some CB depth, it would free us to go saftey in one and two.

What people have to consider is that Indy has Dungy who is a defensive genious, we don't have a coach who can mold very ordinary defensive players into effective NFL starters with a strong system on defense.
On offense it is another story, I think right now we have a good number of weapons and while a franchise runningback would certainly shore up the offense, I think it can be done with less, like the Patriots have done. Right now I think we need to address that fact that we have a serious talent shortage on defense and try to improve that significantly in order to improve the team as a whole.
I will of course reserve the right to change my mind of Torain turns out to be a floater, but for now I think we can get by with what we have in terms of carrying the football and should turn most of our attention to an ailing defense.

I agree, we can't trade off Doom just because we get an all around DE. We need to pair them up on passing downs and make Doom a situational pass rush specialist instead of a starter.

i was praying for us to take Stewart, but I am ok with us not taking him because we got Clady who has Jay's blindside covered for the next decade.
and the reason i liked Stewart over all the other RBs in the draft was his size. I am tired of these 5'10" 200lbs RB's we keep trying to make work. Get this team a 6ft 230lbs RB who can pound the ball up the middle and has the speed to break a big run. And i don't mean a guy with that size and 4.25-40 speed. I mean game speed, able to make good cuts and reads and get into the second level of the defense.

I like the draft and has alot of good picks. I really don't think the Broncos have much of a chance to sign the big 3 free agents in Peppers ,Haynes worth or Suggs. I don't think the Broncos can sign Jemaine Phillips either but he is my #1 target in free agency at 5 million per year. The first pick the broncos draft linebacker in Laurinatis,Spikes,Rey Rey or Curry. I also think Greg Hardy coud be the pick. If The Broncos sign Phillips for stong safety then they look at Fs in a player like Rashad Johnson in the second round or draft a Dt like Jerry Peria or running back like shon Green and hope Johnson falls to 3 round.
Usually a plodder like that isn't quick enough through the hole to take advantage of our 1 cut scheme. McCoy plays with great pop, quickness through the hole and is the ideal one cut back with excellent acceleration. He also is great at making the 1st guy miss.
McCoy is on my chart and rising.
I'm a fan of going after the best DT we can find which would be Haynesworth. Pair him up with Thomas, Roberson, and Peterson and instantly this line gets better. The run defense becomes more stout and the DE's become more effective because the pocket is constantly collapsing.
2nd round pick can be a LB, 3rd round a SS.

I have a hard time believeing that we couldnt land at least one of the big 3 provided that they dont all re-sign. That said please give me Haynesworth a DT of his talent would instantly upgrade our entire line. If we get a S in FA then draft a MLB and a the other S get the best available DT in round 3 fill out the rest of the draft for depth especially CB. No matter what happenes we should have 4-5 new starters on D for next season. I really think if this is the way we go we should be looking at a Tampa 2 instead of the 3-4 but we really need quality Safetys to make it work.

To tell the truth McCoy doesn't excite me at all. I see him as second string RB that will come in and give your starter a breather. The one runner that I surprise that I really like is Ringer. He small but I see a lot of Jones-Drew in him, both power and speed.

Yeah well that situation is one that people value...especially since drafting DEs can be so risky. You draft a DE and wait to find out if it was a mistake...plus Doom has one year left on his rookie contract, no?
Here's the new scouts top 32 list. I think we'll be picking around 20 AGAIN. With this list, we should have some great prospects per our needs falling right around that area.

OK, the WRs were taken in the 5th and 7th. Its kind of silly to pin your hopes on those positions being a starter (assuming its not a K or FB). Thats a good spot to draft a position that you may already have strength at but you can enhance depth and possibly get a contributor. For us, WR is such a position. With Marshall and Royal its not such a dire need as other positions that we should be drafting higher.

To be fair, those look to be BPA picks, not need. Barden and Tate both have huge potential and should be available later than their talent dictates (Barden due to level of competition, and Tate due to injury). Personally, I'd like to see us go that route this year- focus on D early, where we should get more immediate impact, then focus on upside for the offense later in the draft.

i want defense early and often in the draft, but I would be very happy seeing us spend a 1st or 2nd round pick on a stud RB if Torain doesn't prove he is the guy for us.
This offense would be complete and not one dimensional if we had a legit rushing attack. Our current ground game can generate yards just because of the system, but it doesn't scare anyone because we have scrubs in it.
I am all for bringing in Beanie Wells and letting him become a focal point of our offense. Jay's stats and abilities would look even better if we had a RB who commanded bringing 8 into the box and giving Jay the opportunities to get the ball to Marshall, Royal, Scheff, Stokley in one on one situations instead of forcing the ball to any of them when they are blanketed by 2 or sometimes 3 DB's

The Broncos sign either Sean Jones or Jermaine Phillips as a free agent. The Broncos draft 1. Arron Curry http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=KkvAcrXLnOM&feature=relatedy He could be a future all pro at either Sam or Mike. 2, Shonn Green http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=OrWZwH9VVJU I think Green is a cross between Earl campbell and Larry Johnson 3.Juaquin Iglesias. http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=ylClELmmedw Giving Cutler more weapons to score with. Iglesias ,Royal and Marshall means the Broncos will use more spread offence. 4. Dave Brutan http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=K5_LWngbIrA. 5A. Deangelo Smith http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=5TBhbF-m6so He could be the Broncos 5 corner, plus play free safety and return punts. 5b Brandon Tate http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=8phbHgORqaI 6. Jason Phillips http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=AYFN9XJjMf0 7a. Willie Vandesteeg 7b Bernard Scott.
