View Full Version : Tom Brady.....next season at risk?

Doctors are aggressively fighting an infection in Tom Brady's surgically repaired left knee.

Brady recently acknowledged on his Web site that doctors went in "to clean and to test the wound" on Oct. 15 because of the infection. The New England Patriots quarterback has had two more similar procedures since then.

The story was first reported by the Boston Herald and confirmed by ESPN's Wendi Nix.

The Patriots, as an organization, are upset with the situation because they were clear that they wanted Brady's surgery done under the direction of doctors of their choosing in Boston, sources told ESPN.

Instead, Brady opted to have the surgery in California by a doctor his family preferred, and now there are major problems. Brady was supposed to be back in New England by now, but a timeline for his return remains unclear.

A person close to Brady told ESPN: "Tom is looking at months, not weeks, to fix this."

Appearing on Mike and Mike in the Morning, Dr. Rob Gotlin explains that if the infection in Tom Brady's knee doesn't clear out, even a repeat surgery will be doomed to fail. Listen

According to the Herald, Brady is on a six-week course of intravenously administered antibiotics, and is still having follow-up exams at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles, where the surgery took place.

If the infection is not brought under control, the patellar tendon graft used to replace Brady's anterior cruciate ligament could become compromised, according to the Herald's report. If that happens, he will have to undergo another surgery on the ACL. That would reset the clock on his rehabilitation.

Brady had surgery on Oct. 6 -- 29 days after he was injured in the Patriots' season opener -- on a hit by Kansas City Chiefs safety Bernard Pollard. Brady reportedly tore the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in the knee.

New England Patriots spokesman Stacey James said Wednesday the team would let Brady comment on the status of his injury.

Information from ESPN reporter Wendi Nix and The Associated Press was used in this report.

I wonder if the team will have any reprocussions for him not using their doctors. If its prolonged or career threatening they will want some money back. And if its not look for that language to be on page one of his next contract.

Exactly....unless it was written into his contract to you the doctor of THEIR choice....then Brady alone makes the choices for his own healthcare....

i feel bad for him as a football player because i hate seeing anyone get serious injuries, but i laugh at him as an idiot. his smug ass thought he knew better than his team and went against their wishes on which doctor to use and now he is paying for it, and possibly keeping his team without their leader for another season

They need to be careful. Something similar happened to LeCharles Bentley after he tore up his knee. The staph infection had to go down and then heal and only then could they do the procedure to fix his knee and it was never really the same.

Speaking of Staph infections, didn't Kellen Winslow Jr. just recover from one of those? What is it with the Browns and Staph infections? I swear there is a Steeler fan on that team that is poisoning that team. That makes like eight Staph infections in the last four years.

I heard that they rented the infamous Vikings "Love Boat" the week after the Vikings did.....I'm sure that has something to do with it.

That's bad news. It probably means Vancomycin (sp), which is the antibiotic of last resort. After Vancomycin, it's 1930. If the Vancomycin doesn't work and if his body doesn't fight off the infection by itself, it could be worse than season ending.

Yeah....the infection could spread to his penis.....then both Blart and Giszelle (sp?) will be upset. :pity:

The team has major financial investments in his health. As much if not more than Brady himself. They are going to be more thorough than Brady could ever be even with his family helping him find a doctor.

I have had two cadaver grafts as ACL replacements. From what I understand, they make recovery go much faster, because there is only one wound that had to heal (as opposed to having to heal the knee and the place where the graft is removed). But my doctor told me that he wouldn't use a cadaver graft on a high-end athlete, because he doesn't feel the knee ever ends up as strong with one.

My first one was great for about four years. Then, I was playing softball, running the bases, and the thing just ripped out. Granted, I go 4.23 in the 40, and I have a 42-inch vertical jump. Hence, I probably put more pressure on mine than most.

Anyway, I'm on my second one now - about eighteen months into it. We've become fast friends. The previous owner must have been a professional dancer, because I dance like Tony Freaking Manero.

I had that in my lungs when I was sick.

Nothing in the penecillin family will touch it. Only 2 anti-biotics will work, IF it still localized.

I actually thought about talking to them about a free agent contract. I could have been the starting 39-year-old rookie safety - the miracle boy out of nowhere. But I didn't want to put my family through the lifestyle of an NFL player.

Infections are no bull****, folks. Just had knee surgery a while back and I was more worried about post-operation infection than the surgery itself.

Be careful if you're going under the knife, folks. Stay ultra-vigilant about cleaning and keeping it clean.

The problem is his infection is internal on the tendon itself. Which means it entered during surgery. No amount of cleaning could kill that thing. I hope he makes a 100% recovery that would suck to end it like that.

The Pats have millions invested in Brady. He made that franchise relevant, and was still in his prime prior to the injury. I have absolutely no doubt that the Pats would have had his surgery performed by the absolute best surgeon money can get.
In this situation, if you are making over 10 million a year and blow out your knee, unless you play for Cleveland you go to the surgeon the team says.

I have to admit, I thought Brady was an average QB, lucky to be a cog in a great system. Watching the pats this season, I admit I was wrong. He was an integral part of the team and a great QB. Not the best, he's no Elway, no Manning and not as hot as Plummer, but he's a great QB. And I loved when he threw that pass to Champ Bailey in our '05 playoff game. Loved.

I just hope he'll be able to play again.

Brady's health ismore important this his role with the Patriots or what repercussions the team decides have to come down from Brady picking his own doctor. Infections happen, and hopefully it is cleared out. If not, he could lose alot more then a year, he could lose a leg.

Peyton Manning is now claiming he had a staph infection after his knee surgery but denies that it was MRSA. As a society, we OD'd on antibiotics to the point where there are antibiotic-resistant strains floating around hospitals and such. Medical research hasn't been able to keep up with mother nature and it threatens us all, not just athletes.

Exactly. People are starting to take OTC drugs like candy......not to mention the annual flu shots, etc. All they are doing is making the strains stronger, more resistant and more dangerous year by year.

What a shame. It would stink for Brady's career to have to end this way. I'm no fan but I would rather see him leave it on the field.

As for the infection there is little guarantee that if he took the doctor of team's choosing that he owuld have avoided this fate.
