(CNN) -- Sen. Barack Obama will take a break from campaigning Thursday so he can visit his ailing grandmother in Hawaii, an Obama spokesman said Monday.

Sen. Barack Obama will take a break from campaigning so he can visit his ailing grandmother.

1 of 3 "Sen. Obama's grandmother Madelyn Dunham has always been one of the most important people in his life," spokesman Robert Gibbs told reporters.

"In the last few weeks, her health has deteriorated to the point where her situation is very serious. It is for that reason that Sen. Obama has decided to change his schedule on Thursday and Friday so that he can see her and spend some time with her," Gibbs said.

The interruption will cause Obama to cancel Thursday events in Madison, Wisconsin and Des Moines, Iowa. He will do an event in Indianapolis, Indiana, Thursday morning before leaving and will return to the campaign Saturday, Gibbs said.

Michelle Obama will fill in for her husband on Friday at previously scheduled events in Columbus and Akron, Ohio, his campaign said.

Obama speaks about his grandmother often on the stump, describing her as an integral figure in his youth who struggled against the glass ceiling in to make a better life for him.

"She's the one who put off buying a new car or a new dress for herself so that I could have a better life," he said in his acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention in August. "She poured everything she had into me. And although she can no longer travel, I know that she's watching tonight, and that tonight is her night as well."

He and his family traveled to Hawaii in August to visit her.

He can probably hold small conferences in Hawaii and I am sure Michelle will draw her own crowd as well. Maybe other surrogates might talk up a bit more, but I don't think it will hurt too much....

Listen to McNasty or Palin crow about running him off to Hawaii.....

i would say no one is low class to the point were they would use this for political gain, but That's before the whole "Ayers thing"

McNasty and Palin are not above taking advantage of anything, anyway they can. These are scumbags of the first order, and I hope they completely destroy the GOP.

Even if they win, how many party apparatchiks are gonna want to play with them after they've turned their backs on the mainstream of the party that got them there? The rhetoric of McNasty and Palin has emboldened the nutjobs like Bachmann and Limpballs and other creeps to play the race and anti-american games.

Who the F is an anti-american? Who says? Palin? McNasty? Maybe he can announce his standards for Americanism on SNL.

I don't trust those guys for anything.

Hopefully Sen. Obama's grandma is alright. I will definitely pray for her and I look forward to hearing that her health has improved in a short while.

He'll probably get more political mileage out of this, then any stump speech that he misses, because it shows he puts family first, and people respect that.

I hope his grandmother gets better.

I don't believe his grandmother is expected to get better. If that is the case I pray she has a peaceful, easy transition and that her visit with Obama brings her great joy in her final days.

She has a late stage of cancer and isn't expected to make it more than another week or two, possibly less.

I hope that she is able to hang on to see her grandson win this election.

If she passes on Election Day, that would just be sad.....

That's a shame. I've been there, it isn't something I would wish on anyone. It's small consolation, but at least she lived long enough to see her grandson, who she raised, achieve something that only a handful of men in our history have achieved, a presidential nomination, not to mention being the first black man.

By all accounts, she has much to be proud of.

SUCCESS IS COUNTED SWEETEST

by: Emily Dickinson (1830-1886)

Success is counted sweetest
By those who ne'er succeed.
To comprehend a nectar
Requires sorest need.

Not one of all the purple host
Who took the flag to-day
Can tell the definition,
So clear, of victory,

As he, defeated, dying,
On whose forbidden ear
The distant strains of triumph
Break, agonized and clear.
