:thanku:

This scheme is giving up passing yards like we were giving up rushing yards with Jim Bates.

Wait, we're also giving up as many rushing yards as Jim Bates.

We're on pace to break the NFL record of opposing QB pass %.

Fire Slowik.

So Shanahan can hire the new Slowik?

Face it. Shanahan is past it. He's never gonna build a defense in Denver. He might as well retire right now.

We're not relying on Shanahan to build a defense. He specializes in offense in which we've been doing very well in.

Take a look at Jeff Fisher...he's a defensive specialist. He hands offensive situations to his o-cord.

Even tonight, take a look at Bill and the Pats. All the offensive duties were to his O-cord.

Not relying on Shanahan to build a defense scheme, because he probably can't and we all know that...Bowlen has known it even before we won our SB's.

We need a good D-cord.

Shanahan has to hire the guy.

He should have never dumped Coyer.

And frankly, he can't judge defensive talent to save his life.

I agree. It is so ugly out there it is hard to tell if it is the talent level or the scheme. So many blown coverages. We really need a defensive qb. MLB should be at the top of the list. I hope Shanahan is sifting through other practice squads at this point. Let's find some hungry players.

Shanahan's against the wall. If he fires Slowik now... the joke's on him, not Slowik... and he knows it.

Tough call, because maybe Slowik sucks. Maybe firing him is the right thing to do, but even if it IS... Shanahan knows this points the finger right at him. That's HIS guy and this **** is happening TOO often.

As for the thread, my question would be....what happened tonight that can be blamed on Slowik?

I saw us getting great pressure (thank God for small favors) and lots of plays where we were in position to make plays but failed to make the tackle.

Hard to blame that on Slowik.

What we need is some major talent upgrades. Nate Webster, while he has been solid this year, could stand to be replaced by a serious MLB. I'm fairly happy with Winborn and Boss but wouldn't be unhappy if we upgraded there too.

But honestly, with the D-line starting to come around we can focus on the safeties. Both positions should be upgraded, whether it be by Barrett, FA, rookie or a combination.

Barrett and Woodyard. I know Woodyard isn't a Safety, but he has speed and is a good open field tackler. It would be an upgrade over who is there now.

You guys really shouldn't be blaming Slowik. He's just another in the long line of Mike Shanahan victims/scapegoats. He's in over his head and never should have been promoted to DC.

Here's the guy you blame:

I agree Shannys to Blame for Slowik, most of us didnt like the move in the first place. Only reason some people warmed up to him a little is because they heard he was blitz happy. But Slowik is to blame for the Defense, he accepted the job knowing full well what he was getting into.I bet you next time someone tells Slowik to turn crap into gold he will walk away.

What areas of the defense does Shanahan control?

No one seems to really know. He's got at least partial GM duties, but that's a pretty well guarded secret, imo.

You're asking the right question, though. Again, in two off-seasons, we come with with Sam Adams, Simeon Rice, Boss Bailey, Niko Koutouvides and Marlon McCree.

We passed on a list of talented players that is too long to even list here, many available for discount prices.

Now, someone needs to be held accountable for it. But, they never are. You never really hear anyone answer to those kind of questions.

If he doesn't fire or demote Slowik, the joke is still on him if the team's defense doesn't improve. We're not the media, and we as enthusiast fans should understand that if he fires Slowik, he's doing it to win.

Shanahan gave Slowik the defense, what else do you expect Shanny to do if he wants to improve the defense?

Hey, I'm not disagreeing per sa. I'm just telling you that the spotlight is no longer on the guy's Shanahan is hiring/firing every few weeks. The spotlight is on HIM, now...and he knows it. The point of that is only to say that I think it's less likely he makes a move at this point. The perception would be definitively that it's a scapegoat. Shanahan is probably too smart to cut his own neck.

SHOULD be fire him? Well, it's hard to make a case for the guy staying around. Again, it's hard to tell what is scheme and what is talent. Most of us aren't sophisticated enough to really break down a defensive scheme enough to make a definitive call on it. But, judging purely by results, I don't know what the defense for keeping him would be. (No pun intended.)

Do you really think our defensive talent is at a point where we are on pace to give up a record of QB completion %? We have only held one QB under a passer rating of 100!!! QB's getting 90+ or even high 80's are still great QB ratings!

Not to talk about the guaranteed breakout run an RB is promised every game.

Again, you'll get no disagreement from me on this. We're a joke. You're talking to the guy that has been screaming his head off for real front-seven improvements for a decade.

Someone posted some stats in another thread that just make you want to break down and weep. Sammy Morris dropping a buck-thirty on us in a half, for starters. Pretty unreal.

We have a lot of dead cap space this year, no? Which means our hands were kind of tied when it came to FA acquisitions. And since many here have been pleased with our recent draft picks, its hard to fault what has been going on there. But I agree, in the offseason we need to sign an impact DE...either Peppers or Suggs. We should have some cap space next year.

Horrible performance, dont agree that firing Slowik will fix the problem though, I think the problem is still the same has its always been the same, not enough talent period. Way too many weak drafts over the years has put us where we're at, constantly switching DC's before the draft and then drafting for those schemes and then firing the DC after the season and starting the process over again is not a recipe for any success

I think with good coaching this defense is a middle of the road defense. We aren't as talent-deprived as people seem to think. There are some holes, but everybody has holes. Marcus Thomas is starting to look really good. DJ Williams and Bailey are still good. Webster has played pretty well and Dumervil is a sack specialist. We're better than how we're playing on the field. We're not the Ravens or anything near that, but we have the talent to be a 15-ish ranked defense and its not happening.

I agree.
Lets compound what you are saying with the fact that DEN had a season high 5 sacks? last night? On Matt freakin Cassell? And NE STILL simply destroyed DEN with a dumbed down "high school" offensive scheme.
OH! And there 3rd and 4th string RBs.
*sighs* Yeah, i'd say this is a coaching issue.
The Slowik scheme is just a joke. Its like watching a high school team play.

True, but the line he pushes is the 3-4... That would require some personnel changes & Shanny would likely have to ****-can this season (or at least focus on getting offensive t.o's back down) so Nolan can take the remainder of the year to evaluate what fits and what doesn't. You're talking about a setback that could be significant...

To those who say that Shanny doesn't control the Defense, shame on you. Yes, he isn't the D-Coordinator, but he is is the Head Coach and should be involved on both sides of the ball. If he isn't, shame on him, for not doing his job. Now I don't say fire Shanny, because you won't get a better replacement, but the Defensive shortcomings are horid.

Why aren't people bitching about the offense? That unit has really regressed in the last three weeks. Hold on to the freaking ball. Jay is forcing throws etc... What is going on with this unit?
