The red states, those that have typically been voting republican because they despise taxes and because the government intrudes on their lives are almost, without exception, welfare cases. For every tax dollar that Alaskans send to Uncle Sam, the state gets $1.83 back, almost doubling its money. This generous return is given Alaskans in spite of the state’s great wealth that enables what’s known as the Permanent Fund Dividend to be issued to every resident, man, woman or child, as an annual gift of at least a thousand dollars. The Bridge to Nowhere? Why not? Alaska could afford it, thanks to the taxes paid by the rest of the nation.

Montana is returned $1.43 of every tax dollar its residents send to Uncle Sam. Idaho? $1.19, Arizona $1.21, Arkansas $1.40, Alabama $1.63, Mississippi $2.02, South Carolina $1.29, Kentucky $1.51, Louisiana $1.85. Virtually every red state on the electoral map is returned more federal dollars then they send to Uncle Sam at tax time. The blue, democratic states, are typically returned less money then the red states. It’s clear that blue states are a crucial element in balancing the red state’s budgets. Red states are bums with their hands out, and if they had the conviction of their beliefs, and actually believed in all those values they’re always going on about, they‘d send that free money right back to the Federal Government.

The liberals, it turns out, are the benefactors of their poorer brethren in the red states, and get less federal money returned to them. California is returned $.80, Maryland $.65, Vermont $.86, Connecticut $.73, Massachusetts $.85, Delaware $.80. It’s clear that blue states, with a higher per capita income, lend a generous helping hand to their poorer brethren. The poorer brethren however, insist on cutting their own throats, as they vote republicans into office who promise to put an end to their annual windfalls. These actuary numbers are an excellent indication of the pervasive ignorance that envelopes the so called, red states. Republicans, fanatically opposed to any free handout are themselves the largest recipients of handouts, and perish the thought, the charity comes from those liberal Yankees. “Lordy, Lordy. Talk ’bout that o’er ya’alls grits an’ co’n pone.”

But the liberal Yankees ain’t complaining. They only wish there were a little cerebral activity going on down south, and in certain western states. Obama, despite his coziness with terrorists and other neer do wells, is going to win the coming election by such a huge margin that the republican cheats won’t dare to rig the election. They will have to console themselves with the knowledge that they’ve left Obama the booby prize - a sacked treasury, two ongoing wars, the world’s new perspective of the U.S. as a nation of idiots, and an economy in smoking ruins. But Obama will rise above it all. He’s got leader stamped all over him, and his superiority over George and Dick is written in neon for all the world to see. There is an immense happiness, almost an audible sigh of relief, that world leaders will no longer be compelled to deal with a moronic, U.S. President.

The Congress, with a democratic majority, will increase its lead as well, although Pelosi and Reid have not inspired anyone with their “leadership” skills. Perhaps the Barack Presidency will help them find their spines. One can only hope. The real question is whether or not Americans will be able to find their collective purpose as a nation. Will Americans continue believing they’re number one, even though they consume most of the world’s resources, and years of republican “leadership” have seriously tarnished the American promise of democracy, justice, fairness, compassion and tolerance for others? When, or how, will the Sarah Palin’s stop attempting to pretend they’re qualified to head a nation that absolutely must have an intelligent, thoughtful, highly experienced leader that understands international relationships and the extremely complex issues that are typical of the world’s complexities?

The McCain/Palin bid for the presidency is a bad joke. Another republican scam that’s being attempted on the American people. Palin, upon being asked to join McCain’s ticket, should have refused. If a carpenter were asked to join a surgical team scheduled for brain surgery, any decent person would say, “Oh no. Not me. I’m not a surgeon, or even a medical doctor. You‘ve got the wrong person!” But Palin, with husband Todd, jumped at the opportunity. Why? To foist their personal beliefs off on Americans. To enrich themselves with mad dreams of sugar plums dancing in their heads while disregarding the costs of their stupidity to the American people. They completely ignore the notion that the horrific ramifications of their inexperience, their unqualified arrogance, their laughable ignorance, would cost the nation at a time when it’s imperative that intelligent, knowledgeable people assume the reigns of governance. It would be like voting for Forest Gump to teach math, while booting Albert Einstein out of the classroom.

The good news is that the Barack Presidency has come along at the last, possible minute. Even voters in the south are becoming dimly aware that McCain/Palin may not be the best possible choice to lead the nation out of the quicksand that years of republican stupidity and greed have mired it in. How can anyone imagine Sarah Palin, a creature of such vacuous ignorance that she’s capable, while being interviewed on national media, to proclaim her authority as a foreign policy expert because Russia is nearby. Hubby Todd, who would be the first dude, is a member of the “Alaska Independence Party” which seeks to succeed from the “Lower 48.” “Ok Todd. But are you sure you want to give up all that free money the Feds send your way every year? Thinking it over, are you?” Well, thinking is the first step, but the presidency is not the place to practice how.

I'm not buying this article I'm afraid. Montana has over 1,000 miles of Federal Interstate highway alone. Our tax dollars alone couldn't keep that stretch of road maintained. The money Montana gets mostly goes to fixing the roads and maybe a superfund site or two. Our elected representatives may take home the "pork" but it's all a legitimate need. The Feds are the ones that laid the damned thing right down the middle of the valleys following the Yellowstone through some of the more fertile land instead along the hills just up the valley. Went right through my grandparents ranch. It's a part of life and a major asset to the State but nobody can say it's some Montana "Bridge to Nowhere". The Feds wanted it they can help pay for it.

I'm willing to bet each state has a combination of lower to middling population at best and some project that is important enough to warrant federal funding on a relatively large scale.

I don't think the premise of the article is that such federal funding is unwarranted - I think the point is that the facts fly in the face of the typical republican's claim that "I work and pay taxes to support a bunch of lazy bums who don't want to work," etc.

Quite the contrary: the blue states are supporting them.

It's "secede", not "succeed".

Republicans try to divide people between the working and the unemployed. It works well in the red states where unemployment is probably higher. The working class sees the welfare up close and personal. Rural people are very resourceful, so it will piss them off if their neighbor is lazy and taking advantage of the system while their own taxes are being raised.

So, Snow66.

How much has that highway helped the tourist trade? What is the annual take from that source?

How much did the Feds pay your grandparents for the land? Did they build a crossing bridge to connect the land?

Federal money includes the two bases, Great Falls and Glasgow. Without the base in Glasgow. that town is a small ranching and farming supplier on the Hiline for that part of the State. About like Glendive, maybe. Great Falls would be a bit larger than Glendive, maybe Missoula, but would be less important. They could always go to the Miles City Municiple Development plan which is to put th e"houses of Rest and Relaxation" in a single area, like Butte did at one time. (Butte would be okay because of the open pit mine and Anaconda - where my son was born - would have still polluted the holy h3ll out of the area just to th eeast of the town where the little copper colored pool is; people still swim there, do they?.... )

Federal money supports the Health Department and several other Health related enterprises. The Universities get a good share of support, too. The entire State budget was geared to spending the Federal money.....

When I was there, the State was a sad monetary shape, and dang near went bankrupt. They had a Constitution Convention to change the government because it was so broke, and to get Montana Power out of the government. Without Federal money, there would be no Montana...

That's my partially my point.

The way I read the initial article it seemed as if was implying it's welfare supporting a bunch of bums and the stated irony being that the people in those states don't support welfare for for bums (ignoring the fact that it isn't all Red or all Blue and the difference in numbers between each side is 20% at most, counting leaning independents, in any state except maybe Utah). Where I take issue is the apples to oranges comparison. The state is huge, the population isn't large enough, and the economy isn't diverse enough to support even state institutions. You add in the cost of maintaining things like the roads and what not and it's a financial mess.

The Blue states listed with a low return however are very small, have high populations relative to their size, and a much better location for a diverse economy. Of course they won't be getting as much money back. The need is not nearly as desperate. And I'm voting for Obama so nobody make the argument that I'm just trying to defend my home state living off the graces of others. I just don't think it's a proper comparison.

Now what would be a proper comparison is to see the numbers on welfare for each state. If one of those states is taking a disproportionately high number then there's your point.

We are not stressed at all, NPR. But I think McNasty is pretty jittery about now. His campaign is certainly putting out the deflections and negative BS in very deep doses. Seems to me that the McNasty campaign workers are seeing their future political plum jobs circling the drain now....
