View Full Version : Jim Rome on Cutler

I copied this transcript from today’s Jim Rome show.

“I like that guy, in fact I’m a huge Jay Cutler honk. I just like the cats deal, his vibe, his arm, his rap, his ability to lead. Dude is a star and should dominate for a very long time. And don’t think he doesn’t know it. Nor is he afraid to tell you either. And he does back it up. Every single guy who’s tried to follow John Denver, or Elway in Denver has treated the big man with the proper mix of respect and reverence, and never come anywhere near carrying the guy’s jock. It’s understandable; he is John Elway. But not Jay Cutler. He went with the ‘I have a stronger arm than John, hands down’ blast. You know he might, in fact I can’t wait until he plays the ‘I am better than John Elway card’. Cause you know that day is coming. In the mean time, while we’re waiting, we’re just going to have to go with the next best thing. Him rapping a divisional rival…Phillip Rivers. When asked during a TV interview what he thought about Rivers, Cutler danced around the 8,000 pound gorilla in the room before finally admitting, and I quote ‘I’m just not that big of a fan of the guy. I don’ like how he carries himself. I don’t like some of the stuff he does on the field’. I’m not that big of a fan of the guy is code for I hate that guy. We all hate that guy! Look, a lot of people don’t like the way that Rivers carries himself, or some of what he says, or what he does on the field. But it works for Rivers. It works for the Chargers. And he is the undisputed leader of that team. And like Cutler, he is one of the best young studs in the NFL. In fact I love that these guys don’t like each other. I don’t remember Elway saying that he didn’t dig Joe Montana’s act, or that Dan Fouts was a bad seed. I wish he had, but that’s where Cutler and Rivers come in. Let it rip fellas. Cutler v. Rivers The Sequel, December 28th in SoCal. Let the hate begin!”

Yeah I heard that. It was cool. I think people kept hounding him about Rivers and he was like what does it look like? We're not best buddies.

I was laughing at the Phish rants yesterday, though. "Phish fan! React to me!!!"

Rome is a lickbag and absolutely lives for this kinda thing, so it's really no surprise that he'd come out with something like this.

I liked the Rome show when Jim "Chris" Everett threw the table over on Rome during their interview. Everett has some cajones.

I cant stand Rome. I think his game is old and tired, err, everyone knows it and its not getting any fresher - rack me!

However, that is actually a decent take. So, I guess rack him. Not that I will be listening to that tool.

Shanahan was on the afternoon show. He basically echoed what the guy who ran the original interview said. Cutler know there is no way to measure and he idolizes Elway. He has always been asked that question and this interviewer asked it 10 times. So he said it tongue in cheek. And Cutler is just having fun with it.

Its really not as big a deal as people are making it out to be.

It's an inevitable comparison, however unfair to Elway's successor. I think Jay can throw the ball across the field easier with less of a wind up than John. At least it looks that way to me. Elway would always telegraph the bomb downfield. Not that it mattered, 'coz by the time he wound up, it was usually to late to defend the ball.

Don't get me wrong here, John will always be a God to the Broncos. -Unless you ask Dan Reeves.

They both have strong arms. JAY to me has the current strongest arm in the NFL. Stronger than peyton, Carson, all of em. Plus hes accurate, (when he isnt reverting to Plummer-like mistakes)
As for Elway. his arm is legendary.
He is the ONLY QB i ever saw who could throw a football across his body to the opposite side of the field, and consistently make the pass.

"John Elway is the master of the inconceivable pass thrown to the unreachable spot."

I am always reminded of ELWAY's completely cross the field, 50 yard bomb, off one foot, just before he fell out of bounds to Mark Jackson for a TD, when I think of John's arm strength.

Does anyone have the video highlight of ELWAY in 98 in KC, down 3, throwing that 25 yard bomb to Sharpe in the back of the end zone?!?!
One of his finest moments.

look at that pass he made to the end zone to cap THE DRIVE. that ball could have broken every finger on that receiver's hands.

Jay has a cannon for an arm, but no way does his arm compare to Elway's. His arm might be better than John's at the end of his career after surgeries and age took there toll on his arm, but before Elway had injuries to his arm, nobody, not even Jay came close to his arm strength.

Apa, I haven't seen any comment by Cutler saying idolizes Elway, where did you get this. I've read many other QBs saying that Leftwich, Boller, Rothy.

Cutler's arm is not as strong as Elway's was. It's strong, but get real.

I think Jay has a stronger arm, Elway just threw hard on every throw and had no touch until later in his career when out of necessity and shoulder surgery he had to finesse it. I remember being at a game where John threw at a back out of the backfield and threw it so hard that it bounced of the backs hands and went 20 yards to a LB for an interception. If you went through all of Elways interception more than half were from John throwing too hard. That is why you get the impression that John had a stronger arm because he threw it hard ever time. Jay changes speeds and does not throw it hard every time. I think it is close.

Though you make a good point. I still say Elway has a stronger arm. I actually think Jay may be the better passer though because of what you have pointed out. I think hes more accurate and has more touch. But then maybe if I put in the 88 Bears game again, my tune would change a little bit.

damn. i think Elways reputation grows stronger by the year as montana's and marino's grow weaker. and aikman? does any sportscaster even mention him?
when Elway retired espnclassic ran "24 hours of elway" yah it was more like 24 hours of broncos but even when favre retired they didnt do that. probably because favre ended so many playoff games with an interception.
