View Full Version : GOP tells GOD to protect his reputation
If it's not enough that the GOP leaders and backers try to tell the rest of us what is good for us, they have now taken on the task of trying to explain to God what is in his best interest and what he should be doing in regards to this election.
“There are millions of people around this world praying to their god—whether it’s Hindu, Buddha, Allah—that his opponent wins, for a variety of reasons. And Lord, I pray that you will guard your own reputation, because they’re going to think that their God is bigger than you, if that happens,” said Arnold Conrad, the former pastor of Grace Evangelical Free Church in Davenport.
Not sure about you guys but this absoultely makes me sick. That a pastor has the nerve to tell God to protect his own reputation. As if God is worried about that somehow.
Let me just add a few things here. First of all, God doesn't have a "reputation". That is for mortals to be concerned with. Second, I'm going out on a limb here and gonna day GOD is not picking a side. Just like I don't believe he picks a side when 2 sports teams play each other, even though some team prayers ask for victory.
Yeah, I can see God up there in Heaven now being all worried and bothered about this. He's probably more disappointed in a prayer from a pastor who thinks he knows what is best for God himself.
K - gonna upchcuk again. I hope his congregation flock somehwere else to somebody who knows a thing or 2 about what God really cares about.

Bsides all that junk, there is an admonitionion the Bible about using God's name for endorsments in any political endeavor. You're not supposed to use the God brand for frivolous stuff.

I like the picture drawn of God by Hesse at the end of Siddartha: The river that flows, never stopping, bringing life and love to all those who partake of His waters. Never ceasing, never diminishing, never judging. Offering to cure every thirst that comes to Him, without judgment. Ceaselessly breathing the universe.

And it's ALL frivilous stuff.
If people actually READ the Gospels, they would soon realize Jesus doesn't give a crap about the USA, or Iraq, or any other country, or its leaders. And he disliked money, war, judgmental attitudes and the death penalty.
"Render unto Caesar...."
"Let ye who is without sin...."
"It is harder for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of heaven...."
Read the Gospels, and you'll realize Jesus was a VERY serious pacifist, he greatly disliked government, money and authority. And he was a lover of ALL his fellow men. Read 'em some time ... they're not even long. You could do the main four in two or three hours, and several of the apocryphal ones in an hour more. It's amazing how these "Christians" can't seem to find time for the word of Christ.

Siddartha is written by the same author that wrote Steppenwolf... Hermann Hesse. :)

While it's strange to bring up "reputation" when it comes to God, I refer to the part in the Bible where God says that people shall not have other gods before me. I think that's what the prayer means. Also, I would have to see the comment in context. We can't assume that pastor is voting GOP. So, THAT part of your statement is flawed...

Not to worry: that guy wasn't talking to God, just to his own delusions. :-)

I wan't quoting Hesse. I don't remember the exact words he used and I guess I've misplaced my copy of Siddartha. It's probably under the seat of a VW bus somewhere. ;D

Probably right, but he was doing an invocation for a McCain rally......
The "message" was put up in another thread. See if you can find it.....

I am so happy with my own visualizations from reading that book I would almost be afraid to see a movie of it.

Hesse is my favorite author, so I understand.
The film doesn't begin to do justice to the novel, IMO, but it's very good for what it is.
