Mods can we leave this around for a few please. It is slow anyway :)

2 nights ago all the sudden the screen on the laptop just went blank. The lights on the key board were still on but the screen was gone and would not come back. So I powered off manually and restarted. The lights on the key board went on and off a few times then it started and worked fine.

Last night same thing only this time the lights on the keyboard go on and off every few seconds and the screen never turns of.

Ideas? Suggestions?

That is all.

Could it be the sensor that shuts your screen down when you close the laptop getting stuck or shorting making it think its being closed.

If it is software failure you can try to go back to last system restore.
Or you could reinstall the operating system.

if nothing else works you could always shortcircuit the cmos. If you can do that at all on laptops. Then the bios would go back to presets.

Could be a lot of things.... I seriously doubt your OS has anything to do with your screen not showing up (you said it doesn't even show up on bootup)?

If your hard drives seem to spin - take a listen to the laptop - and it seems to be booting up, it has nothing to do with the BIOS.

So if it seems to be booting and you have hard drives spinning and you don't hear weird beeps I'd try to close and open your laptop while it's booting. I've seen some laptops have weird LCD issues that are resolved by opening and closing them. If that doesn't work I'd say you need the LCD replaced.

Provide some more details maybe we can help!

Ok the screen does not show up at anytime
I hear the fan briefly at start up
I hear the drives spin briefly at start up
Then everything gets quiet (all light on keyboard power etc are lit up) then after 3-10 seconds of nothing happening all the lights go off like they would at shut down....then second later they all light up again and the fan runs for a second and the drive spins for a second. wash rinse repeat until I manually shut it off.

Wow that's pretty weird. Here's what I would do to troubleshoot:

1.) Remove the laptop battery, plug power in directly and try to boot.

1.) If you have 2 memory sticks, remove one of the sticks and attempt to boot.

2.) Try the other stick in the same slot and boot up

3.) Perform step 3 on the other memory slot.

4.) Inspect CPU fan cable (motherboards that enable CPU fan checking typically just shut down instead of behaving the way you're describing but could be).

Typically, memory and cpu issues will cause the laptop to perform a series of beeps so these are just suggestions.

If none of these work, you're likely to get seriously screwed by someone that attempts to repair it. They will probably point at the motherboard or power supply (which is definitely possible), at which point it would probably be cheaper buying a whole new laptop than getting it replaced. Good luck!

How many TSR's are loaded during startup. Run msconfig and eliminate all that are not needed.

Take a Viagra, I hear that keeps it up!

I am not reading the whole thread, PM me if you need further help.

ctrl-alt delete and open task manager, check all the running apps right after starting and before you open any yourself.

End task for anything that you didn't start.

Or install spyware like Spybot to see what is malicious on your PC

458 kb/s upload

ping 170 ms
distance 50 miles

The computer is a Mac with a 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.

The computer pretty much screams. 24" screen and everything is built into the screen on the back. I think it's my internet service that BLOWS!!!

Can of air, spray the dust from the inside of your laptop. That doesnt work or solve the problem, take it in.

Honestly Hotrod, this simple solution has solved nearly every laptop issue with similar symptoms.

when you first hit power, try hitting f12 or f2 to force it to bios. If you can get there than your screen is fine and its most likely a Vista driver error.

but really. if this is truly divorce ammo take the damn thing to a shop. unless you ran a discwipe on it it can probably be recovered.
i once let my ex get away with cashing an entire joint tax refund without my signature(early days). best 800$ i ever spent-let go w/ever. i would never toss away that $$ nowadays but back then-it was freakin worth it.

Hotrod

-Trying to boot it up in safe mode, if desktop comes up it then it driver issue with the video card and the operating system. You need to get a new driver for the card or roll back the last MS patch. This might be the case if it older machine.
- If it a Dell check the technical support, their laptop screens have over last couple of years started to go bad due to quality. You might need to send it back for new screen.

Or send to Spider and he will fix it wyoming style.
