“For every thousand that strike at the leaves of iniquity there is one that strikes at its root.”

That is the sense I have with much that is going lately. As you guys know, I am right of center, but prescribing all blame to Dems, and all cures to Repubs is stupid, and wrong -- in fact this strong identification to one party or another is part of why there is such a lack of trust out there, with all of its unintended consequences. The bickering is as stupid as assigning blame to Barney Frank or George Bush for steering all of us into the iceberg. Either way the economy is going to reset, much like what happened to the USSR in the early 1990’s.

So, the real question is when this happens -- do we tear each otrher to shreads, or decide that the real enemy are those in government who care more about power than those they should be there to serve? Remember how we felt on 9/12 -- yes, there was a sick feeling, and some fear, but I miss that feeling like were going to stick together no matter what.

People keep talking about stock losses, but I don’t think that is the real story – the real story (that is coming like a wave after an earthquake) is the lack of money that is needed by businesses to cover payrolls, which of course will mean massive layoffs. The real story is that food prices will be shooting up (much more than in the past year.) The real story is the march to Socialism, and the adding of fuel to the economic fire – each step we have taken has been wrong – lowering interest rates, just further deflates the dollar. Who the hell do we bail out next? California can go to hell – they need to cut their expenses, but instead they want a bailout? GM, Airlines, who else is too big to fail? So every industry and state government that was irresponsible should be bailed out by those who are lived within their means? Each time we attempt to put off collective payment, we inflate the problem.

So don’t talk to me about loosing money in your 401K – are you kidding?

There are some silver linings to economic doomsday, one might be a recalibrating of values – what really matters? Your various titles, or your family? Your pathetic party --or your country? Your 401K, or keeping your job? Your flat-panel TV, or the ability to feed your family?

Well-said, Bob, and you know I don't agree with you often. Maybe we can all get back to some of what made this country great to begin with -- and that didn't have much to do with extremists of either the right OR the left.

Such are the policies of the one party state.

But truthfully this goes back to the corporate charter and the way corporations have been treated over the past century. In the form of modern corporations we have created totalitarian tyrannies that now dominate most of the world's governments. They are endowed with rights that greatly exceed the rights of ordinary citizens, and are required by law to be pathological and to seek profit as their only motivations.

Fundamental changes are in order. Hopefully the silver lining of this current crisis will be to start down the path of reform.

For the most part I agree with your post. Although I am for Obama I fear having a total party in control. It divides the country and we've seen far too much of that in the last 8 years. I totally agree about the recalibrating of values. We are partly to blame for this mess.....for not standing up to what goes on in Washington and for our credit spending beyond means. But I have to go WHAT when you say don't talk to me about losing money in your 401K. We have millions of baby boomers reaching retirement each year for the next 20 years, who won't have jobs. The natural progression of retirees leaving the job market helps create jobs for those moving into the job market. And those baby boomers better have a retirement cushion as social security being available gettings iffier. Otherwise we damn well come together because we'll be caring for an overload of our elderly because their 401K or other retirement was washed away by this crisis and social security just doesn't cut it.

People loosing money is sadI think it is clear that many wont retire now. I worry about my very old grandmother and parents (who are in their 60's) I sincerely dont look foward to what I think is coming, and again hope I am wrong, but the math does not work for a quick correction in the markets, that will make everything alright.

I was thinking about how vastly different life was for Americans, and everyone else on the planet from the beginning until just about 150 years ago -- the level of prosperity and advancements have been nice, and perhaps a blessing but in terms of our lives being "normal" from a historical perspective -- its not, and if some dude in Haiti can find happiness with few things, and if humanity could find meaning and purpose for 1000's of years with out all of this "stuff" perhaps we can find a way to live through some tough times, and find a way to live without Ipods, and two cars -- and this vacuous rat race. I think our normal is framed without much context, in every hard time some are refined by it, others go crazy, as I am already a bit "touched" perhaps the process may have a santifiying effect on many (including my own life) to reconsider what is of greatest value.

Let's hope... it's a difficult thing to stay grounded and find our real priorities when facing the prospect of nightmare fears. I've struggled with it on and off for the past year, until I've just about reached a point of "crisis burnout." I simply can't worry about it any more, just do what I can in practical living as best I can from one day to the next.

And it just leaves me shaking my head when I see some of the extreme ways that people are already diving off the deep end trying to deal with their fears. This came off one of my local mailing lists, and just left me amazed. I'm still trying to figure out just what the heck it's supposed to mean. (This is a short version of some of the fluffy weirdness that crosses my desk.)

"Please join as we create a compounding effect on the Blessings pouring forth to the U.S. economy and the World economy. Let's come together and make it 3 Powerful Consecutive evenings of Meditation!

We are continuing our efforts to come together as ONE to help invoke massive Divine Energies to help Disintegrate the negative thoughtforms, poverty consciousness energies and especially ANY Obstructing Thoughts and Energies that might be hindering the restoration of the U.S. Economy."

Good stuff ... we need more of this kind of unity-thinking.
