From this week's SI (pg. 19), a survey of 320 NFL players were asked:
Who is the most overrated Quarterback in the NFL?
Philip Rivers, Chargers - 13%
Tony Romo, Cowboys - 10%
Eli Manning, Giants - 10%
Vince Young, Titans - 8%
Ben Roethlisberger, Steelers - 7%

Its hard to argue with that list.
Every one of those QBs are on teams with a crapton of talent. Every one of those QBs has serious flaws to their game. Eli is probably the best of that bunch though. His issue with confidence seems to now be gone and he IS playing as well as his hype.
Ben throws the ball 13 times a game.
Rivers has probably the most talented offense in the NFL.
Romo makes huge mistakes in nearly every game.
Young...well his issues are well documented. Though it would be difficult to call him overrated, maybe over-covered. Most analysts dont think much of Young.

Funny that Leinhart is not on the list. He can't get on the field enough for players to form an opinion :~ohyah!:

I look at it as overrated by whom. Educated football fans have known for years that Vince Young is trash, but ESPN was all over his you-know-whats until this year and suddenly they act like they've been reporting his struggles for years.
I actually don't think its Rivers. He isn't hyped as a star QB by any means and I think he's actually played pretty well this year considering the circumstances around him. Eli doesn't deserve to be on that list, he's been playing really well this year.
Ben certainly doesn't throw a whole lot, but the guy does make plays and seems to get his team in a position to win every week.
I'd have to go with Romo. There's talk he's the best QB in football, but whenever I watch the guy play - I just wonder what he'd be without Witten and T.O. - not to mention Barber and Jones in the backfield. Watching Romo play reminds me of Plummer in 2003 - I see him make some plays with his feet to keep the play alive and he's got a quick release but I've yet to see him make really tough decisions under pressure. In fact, nearly every pressure scenario Romo's been put under - he's failed.

It was football players who were polled, so take spin out of the equation. My question is, granted the article is in this week's edition, but when were the players actually polled?
I agree with you on Eli, but maybe the players were polled before the start of this season, and maybe would change their opinions now ???

Interestingly enough, I think we'd be shocked at how much ESPN influences the opinions of players and coaches. Reading Fastis' book and interacting with a few current and former athletes and coaches through my job - it absolutely shocked me to the level ESPN influences even those guys.

What types of plays have you seen Romo make that you don't think Plummer could've in that offense with those weapons?

As little as I enjoy agreeing with a defense of Rivers, this is accurate to a tee.

As much as I hate Rivers, he's not overrated. He's a very good QB and he has been tearing us up for awhile now. Chambers is his first legit receiver and even before him he has done very well. Rivers' stats are better than Cutlers' this year and there's no argument about who has better receivers. LT has even been playing like sh*t and he has still been doing very well.

*shrug* Do you think Romo could have taken that Cardinal team to the playoffs and beaten a heavily favorite Dallas team?
He cant even win at home in the playoffs.

Check your stats....Rivers does not have better stats than Cutler. He has one more touchdown pass and like 50 less completions.

I wonder how many of those who voted for Rivers being overrated voted him overrated solely on account of the fact that he is a major a$$ and they cant stand him? He is a pretty good QB. I dont think he has the arm strength of an elite QB, but overall, he is pretty good.

I'm actually a subscriber to SI and pulled this from the magazine. They do a poll like this every week although it's been baseball the last few. They do point you to a link, but there's nothing more than what was listed in the magazine: http://www.fannation.com/si_blogs/staff/posts/12302

Ok, I see it. So they just took the top five answers from the poll which means that every QB in the league probably made the list with at least one vote. Ha! Well it is interesting nonetheless. For what it's worth I think Rivers is very good and since no one is really saying he's elite, It's hard for me to say he's overrated.

Rivers got lot of hype in his first 2 years with Merril Hoge calling him the next Marino and I don't think he was that good. Personally, I think his play was suspect till about half way thru last year - his rating when under pressure was very low per KC Joyner.
However, he has played well towards the end of last year (especially after SD got chambers) and this year and I am surprised to see him leading the poll.

I'd say Romo based on his surrounding cast and the fact that he his playoff history has been series of embarrassing first round failures.
Roethlisberger is an elite quarterback without the benefit of a ton of offensive playmakers and an offensive line at the bottom of the league in pass blocking. He's not overrated.
Eli has been totally solid since week 17 last year. Not overrated from that point on, imo.
Young is tough to overrate because hardly anybody rates him high anymore.
Rivers is on an erratic team with what is right now an overrated surrounding cast. Crap defense and an offense full of injuries. Last year he lost his top runner and top catcher and still managed success in the playoffs until he tore his ACL. What's overrated?

Anyone who says Romo is overrated doesn't know ****. He pulls more plays out of his ass than anyone since Rich Gannon.
He made an amazing throw to Miles Austin a couples weeks ago on a late game...god it was picture perfect. And Miles FUGGIN Austin, no less.
Romo is pretty much my ideal quarterback. Pocket passers are great, but I love a dude who can get out and scramble and create plays out of nothing.
Rivers, I agree, is really overrated. Weak arm, slow release, not very mobile, hothead. He's tough and he can read a defense and he's accurate, but he's one of the few quarterbacks the Chiefs have made their bitch in recent years. I don't respect him at all as a player.

It depends how you rank him. I don't think he's one of the top QB's in the game, but he certainly knows how to play. If provided with a good defense and solid running attack he will play carefully, not make mistakes, and create enough to win. Of course Trent Dilfer managed that as well but no one was calling him one of the best in the games.

Amazing, but I agree completely. I have no idea how people argue with Romo as a top QB. Probably just Cowboy-haters. Which is cool, but Romo is a Top 5 or 6 in the league, no two ways about it.
Part of the problem with the comments here is just a confusion in terms. "Overrated" does not mean BAD. It just means overrated. Rivers, Romo and Manning are all EXCELLENT quartebacks ... at minimum in the top 10 in the league. I wouldn't trade Jay for any two of them, but facts are facts, and they're all excellent.

You're right ... I think a lot of this vote is popularity (or UN-popularity). Vince Young, Jamarcus Russell and (until a few months ago) Alex Smith, all were all Top 4 draft picks the last 3 or 4 years, and they all suck.
So by the definition of the word "overrated" ... VY, Jamarcus and Alex are definitely more overrated than these three Pro-Bowlers. :oyvey:
