Talking trade
October 8, 2008 1:00 PM
Posted by ESPN.com's Bill Williamson
With the NFL trading deadline six days away, let's have some fun. Let's look at what position each team in the AFC West could use.
NFL trade deadline deals are not plentiful, so don't expect much. I'm not going to mention specific players' just positions. Feel free to comment and let us know your desires.
Denver: Defensive end
Why? The Broncos can make a long playoff run if they get their defense together. Other than on opening day at Oakland and Sunday against Tampa Bay, Denver has had trouble on defense, giving up big yardage on both the ground and in the air. It seems Denver's greatest need area is on the defensive line. The team could use another pass rusher. The Broncos pressured the quarterback well against the Buccaneers as they registered three of their nine sacks on the season. Still, Denver could use a consistent pass rusher.
Can we still trade Al Wilson for Justin Tuck?

It's got to be Jared Allen or Dwight Freeney. It just has to!
Merlin Olsen and Decon Jones are available.... either one could run for 2k, play SS AND pressure the QB

Is this the deal with Hillis?
Maybe someone wants him, and we are sitting him while we work out the datails?

Any player you get will cost a pick or 2 next yr. I think we are more then one player away on defense. The smart move is to stay the course. Not one of the Broncos important offensive players is old. We have a good window to build the defense a bit more through the draft.
Now if some team wants to fire sale a good player for something like a 4th round pick then go 4 it.

Ah, yes, Burger Bill has outdone himself again, pointing out an obvious weakness while providing no new information regarding a possible trade.
Basically this guy does what we do, only he gets paid.

I'll make sure to say something really dumb to make up for it.......Like when I said Jarvis Moss would be a stud.
Pretty said when you are hoping for a trade at DE when just 2 years ago we drafted a DE with our 1st pick.

I wonder what the Rams would want for O.J Atogwe?
Would certainly be a massive improvement on our current safeties, could roam deep and allow us to play 8 in the box as we want to without leaving ourselves doomed to get gashed over the top. He'd certainly make teams think twice before going deep on us, had 8 picks last year.
Only 27 years old as well so a long-term solution to the position too.

Nothings going to happen.
5 days remaining on the deadline and we would've heard a detail leaked of specifically who they were in talks over. And that Leonard Little bull**** certainly wasn't it.

ESPN should stop playing Madden....
No doubt.
Since when did the NFL become baseball or hockey? Trades just dont happen in mid-season in the NFL. And on the rare occasions that they do, its never a blockbuster trade. It just doesnt happen.
I read an article on FoxSports (I think) where they talked about KC trading away LJ. He's a RB, not a closer. It just doesnt happen in this sport. If anyone should know this, it should be the national sports outlets.

I thought someone on one of the thousand threads said they thought Tommie Harris was on the trade block that would be interesting and would they have to sell the farm to get someone of his caliber

From yahoo sports:
DE Dewayne White Detroit
Comment: “He isn’t a great player, but he’s a good one and he can help any rotation. Plus, you can move him inside from time to time. He probably won’t get more than five or six sacks, but that’s worth it if you’re the right team.” Said another exec: “Try finding a pass rusher at this point of the year.”
Best potential fits: Just about any team except the New York Giants, Indianapolis Colts, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Jacksonville Jaguars.
DT Cory Redding, Lions
Comment: “If I’m the Lions, I clean house starting now. I don’t even wait for a new GM. This guy played hard for a contract and hasn’t done anything since. Again, I think it’s more about Detroit than the player, so I’d take a chance … if he’s motivated, he can rush the passer from the inside.”
Best potential fits: Colts, Eagles, Redskins and Broncos.

Detroit can't afford to keep dumping the few players they have with talent for relatively nothing in return.

HEs the only guy out there really that i would say would be a good pick up.
Hes really good, and would solve a long term position at Safety.

What would you guess they'd want for him?
I know you love your draft picks, would you be comfortable giving up an early selection for him?

Well, lets look at how productive OJ is.
2007 SEASON: Experienced best season in the NFL…started all 16 games…led the team with
eight interceptions, most in the NFC (second in the NFL)…made interceptions in four consecutive
games, first Ram to do so since Anthony Newman made four picks from 1991-92…eight interceptions
most on team since LB Dexter McCleon had eight in 2000…finished third on the team
with career-high 94 tackles (69 solo)…two forced fumbles tied for second-most on the team.
• Led the team with 10 tackles (nine solo) in season opener vs. Carolina 9/9.
• Named Rams Defensive Player of the Game after making six tackles (five solo), one forced fumble
and one fumble recovery in Week 3 at Tampa Bay 9/23.
• Made first interception of the season in Week 4 at Dallas 9/30 and returned it 8 yards.
• Against Green Bay in Week 15 12/16, made two interceptions…with :23 remaining in the first
half, intercepted QB Brett Favre…recorded second interception of the game in the fourth quarter…
first multi-interception game of career.
• Recorded five tackles (four solo) and one interception in season finale at Arizona 12/30…picked
off QB Kurt Warner in the third quarter and returned it for a touchdown…first touchdown of
career.
2006 SEASON: Started all 16 games…finished third on the team in tackles and tied for first
in forced fumbles.
• Tied for team lead with a career-high nine tackles (five solo) vs. Denver 9/10.
• Caused two forced fumbles in consecutive games in Week 10 at Seattle 11/12 and in Week 11
at Carolina 11/19.
• Helped seal the game with a fourth quarter interception vs. San Francisco 11/26.
• Forced a fourth-quarter fumble vs. Washington 12/24 that helped send the game into overtime.
2005 SEASON: Played in 12 games.
• Made first career sack at Houston 11/27.
• Made first career interception in season finale at Dallas 1/1/06.
He is a very good safety on a very bad team. He has simply made a ton of plays there, and is very consistent. I dont think hes had a real bad injury history, so i would say that STL would want some pretty steep compensation for OJ. Hes still very young.
STL got him in 2005 for a 3rd, so they would most likely want either a 2nd, or multiple picks. Now since DEN happens to HAVE (yeah!) multiple picks in the 5th, i would say packaging both of them for him, or giving a 3rd and a 6th might work. Something like that considering that STL NEEDS picks to build that team again.
Either way, DEN is going to have to give to get. OJ is simply a very talented player.
