In his ninth year in the NFL and third with the Broncos, Nate Webster has seen and done it all. He knows what it takes to be successful in this league. He won a Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and now he wants to bring the Lombardi trophy back to Denver. With a new scheme in place, he’s ready for the defense to step it up in 2008. And now that he’s back at his natural spot of middle linebacker, he’s ready to wreak more havoc than ever.

Who is Nate Webster?
Sometimes, I don’t know who Nate Webster really is. On the field, he turns into somebody else. Off the field, Nate Webster is down to earth, humble, cool, easy to get along with. He loves his kids and likes to live life to the fullest. That’s Nate.

How important is communication between the linebackers on the field?
Very important. At any time, whatever defense is called, we may have to check to another defense off a certain motion or certain alignment that the offense may show us. All the linebackers and the secondary have to communicate to make sure all of us are on the same page. Communication is very important, very key.

Where do you see the most improvement on the defense overall?
Stopping the run. It started during camp versus the Cowboys. With those guys having one of the most talented and biggest offensive lines in the league, for us to stone them was a big start for our defense – it was a confidence builder. In the first game of the season, to come close to a shutout against the Raiders, we played really good defense. Not only that, the second game we were able to hold the Chargers to 80 yards rushing, and we all know the Chargers are an explosive offensive team -- they’ve got LaDainian Tomlinson and Darren Sproles. But we’re not done yet. Each week we want to continue to get better and never be satisfied.

Where do you see the most improvement in your own game?
Just going back to the middle has improved everything. It’s the position that I’ve played all my life. I just feel more at home, more comfortable in the middle. I’m coming in, also, in the best shape of my life, getting after it with Strength and Conditioning Coach Rich Tuten in the strength and conditioning program. It all starts there. And just coming in with a positive attitude, knowing that my body is in shape and strong and all I have to do is play ball.

Larry Johson might have something to say about that

Absolutely ---after giving up almost 200 to LJ I bet that this interview took place before the KC game, otherwise Webster has been seeing a positive thinking intervention coach...........

Again, Webster hasn't been great, but he hasn't been horrible, from what I can tell. He's a marginal tackler, but gets to the ball quickly and generally holds his own.

But, a guy like that is helpless with the four guys in front of him getting manhandled all day long.

Well I found this little bit on wikipedia

Nate Webster is an American Football player with American Football Conference's Denver Broncos. He is most noted for averaging 2.4 lost helmets per game (LHG). He is also known for missing badly on screen plays, and has to play behind the worse DL in football.

lol this was on wikipedia too He has also gained some fame in the NFL for always having his helmet fly off during tackles.

What do you think Lost helmet per game means?

Webster isn't a quality starter. It's players like him that are keeping the defense down.

Sure if a guy is on the field he will make a play here and there but a playmaker this guy isn't.

Haha Nate reminds me of The Todd on Scrubs:
"almost 200 rushing yards allowed, HIGH FIVE!"

Nate Webster is a one trick pony! Straight line player...who can make the tackle if the runner doesn't move side to side. Simply put...he's terrible!

If you think otherwise...go back and watch the tape of any of the first 4 games and tell me...if there aren't 3 bad plays for every good play. The guy is a huge liability. I'd rather take my chances with Larsen.

Nate is one of the most undisciplined football players ive ever seen.

Takes terrible angles, overpursues plays, and blows assignments left and right.

Niko, Larsen, or Woodyard couldnt be any worse at this point. Atleast they would play within themselves.

I agree with the above post... He is killing our D, and I felt this way last year, b/c he is sooo undisciplined and does not stay IN his assignment gap. It drives me nuts to CONSTANTLY see him out of possition. I really want to see ANYONE else play MLB the rest of the year, just because I feel if they are more disciplined than him, our D can get a little better

I'd even go so far as to add Beck to that list! :-/

He really has perfected the "face time via lost helmet" move...at least he is innovative.

Haha I love how you can almost hear the announcers roll their eyes like "not this **** again":
"....aaaand it looks like...webster of the broncos...lost a helmet on that play"
It's getting old for everyone.

No other way he can get his mug on national TV.....so he dons that oversized helmet with the loose chinstrap and has at it.

I'm convinced it's by design....no way is it by accident.

WE need to get Niko in there for the base defense IMO. I think the coaches were upset with his poor coverage skills in preseason, but we need a run stuffer in the middle. If Niko gets in there I still have some hope he could be like a Jeremiah Trotter type - great run stuffer/5th Dlineman and an above average blitzer.

We could then take him out on nickle packages and let DJ get in the middle. Again not ideal but an improvement over Webster.

Out of curiousity anybody know how often Webster is on the field on passing downs?

Webster doesnt play passing downs if they are in the traditional nickel (DJ and Boss are on the field).

But when they do this retarded 3-4 crap on 3rd down, hes on the field

well if I remember correctly in the offseason wasn't there alot of people wanting them to switch to the 3-4? They just don't have good enough players for that to work they need to just stick to the 4-3 and if they are going to switch then go about it in the offseason because switching back and forth ain't cutting it

Haha. Webster was ghettoed out with a tall tee and pinwheel cap on. DJ, Peterson and Thomas were in t-shirts and shorts all while the girls were completely slutted out and hanging all over them - it was pretty funny. The guys appeared to be having a few drinks but weren't drunk or obnoxious at all, just chillin' before the inevitable conclusion of this evening with those girls.

inevitable? Knowing webster, he'll probably be in the wrong gap and blow his top off right when he makes contact.

FYI, just some interesting notes I found:

http://www.nfl.com/stats/categorystats?tabSeq=0&statisticCategory=TACKLES&conference=null&season=2008&seasonType=REG

DJ is tied for 5th in the NFL with 34 tackles.

http://www.denverbroncos.com/page.php?id=334&storyID=8411

According to coaches’ film review, LB Nate Webster(drafted by Tampa Bay in 2000 and a Buc from 2000-03) leads Denver with 36 tackles (31 solo)...

The main problem with this defense is that our DT's suck ass. Even Webster could continue to be servicable if we could put somebody up front that could take some pressure off the rest of the team.

They don't really have the players to run a 4-3 either, but you are right about a 3-4 not being very feasible right now. We don't have the players on the D-line to do it. I do wonder though if Moss wouldn't be better as a standup rush DE/OLB rather than what he does now with the 4 point stance (a longshot I know, but hope spings eternal to salvage some value from the pick.)

I like Ho Train best for Torain. Man, I can imagine the old ESPN Primetime theme playing in the background when Berman says Ryan Hoooo Torain in a highlight. I can just hear it.

Everytime that kid scores a TD, they should play the WWE GodFather theme at the stadium. Ha!
