SHANAHAN: DAVIS LIKED KIFFIN MORE THAN HE LIKED ME
Posted by Michael David Smith on October 1, 2008, 3:19 p.m.
During his comments to reporters Wednesday following the announcement of the firing of head coach Lane Kiffin, Raiders owner Al Davis brought up another coach he fired after 20 games on the job, Mike Shanahan.
“When Shanahan left me, he went to Denver,” Davis said. “He was there for about four or five years as an assistant and they fired him for insubordination. Dan Reeves and he had a big battle. He went to the 49ers and he learned their style of football and when Dan Reeves failed in Denver, the first guy they had was Wade Phillips, I think . . . then he brought Shanahan back. And Shanahan had success. But Shanahan has an asterisk next to those two Super Bowls, because they were caught cheating.”
At his own press conference today, Shanahan was asked about Davis, and he tried to make light of the situation.
“I was really disappointed, to be honest with you,” Shanahan said. “When you take a look at it, I was there 582 days. Lane Kiffin was there 616 days. So what it really means is that Al Davis liked Lane more than he liked me. And I really don’t think that’s fair. I won three more games, yet he got 34 more days of work. That just doesn’t seem right. Does it to you guys? No, really, think about it.”
After getting a chuckle from the media with that, Shanahan continued.
“I know the right thing to say. The thing I should have said is, ‘I haven’t had time to look at interviews and what really happened.’ But I think everybody saw the press conference. We’ll leave it at that.”

Anyone else find that particular wording (of the bolded phrase) amusing? Jeez...Al sounds like a jilted lover or something.

Wow, old man Al has Shanahan's timeline and events down. Scary thought.

The untold story:
Al tried drop Shanahan into his trap door where the Raider Nation's "Eddie the Beaver" was ready to off the coach. Due to excess mucus in the eye Davis couldn't reach his lever in time. Mike had already made his way out the door and never saw how close he came to certain death.

Shanahan should just sign Kiffin for a one day contract...you know for the day we play the Raiders. Just to stick it to Greasy Al.

I cannot believe this old man is still crying over us winning SB's. But then again it just goes to show how much he hates us winning. He probably had a stroke this last time and on his home field. Makes you wonder who he was madder at, Kiffin or Shanahan. Hilarious!
