It is amazing how just getting by some weeks will soothe so much for a football fan. And then when a team's weaknesses get exposed, it's like an entire house of cards comes down.
I waited for a bit to chime in because I knew things would be a mess in here. By Foneco, I was right. I've seen a couple of posts to this effect, but let's all relax, take a few more deep breaths, and talk about what was true before the KC game, and what remains true.
--We have one of the best QB/WR tandems in the league.
--Hell, we have one of the best QBs in the league, even withour Brandon!
--We also have a talented QB in his third season. Mistakes will be made, along with brilliant, breathtaking plays. Enjoy the Cutler roller coaster folks. He still will make 2-3 bad decisions a game, throw into coverage, and lock on to his primary target without looking off. He is not an all-pro yet, but it's coming. Soon.
--We have a very good O-line, with a running game that has not hit it's stride. I fully expect Torrain to get a good hard look when he returns.
--You cannot win a football game on the road in the NFL when you turn the ball over 4 times. Period. Jay made bad decisions and our WRs had the droppsies. Clean up the fumbles and picks and the outcome of the game may very well have been different. Watch for better ball security vs. Tampa.
--It's hard to play solid defense when the field is short. And the Chiefs had short fields all the time. The defense played better than it had been playing. Hopefully they can take another step against TB.
--We still have no pass rush. **sigh**
--We have a MLB who misses assignments. He's fast and physical, but has a .02 cent head. That is rarely protected by a helmet.
--We have no safety talent on this roster. it may be developing in Barrett, but it's not there yet. We need to address DE, LB, Safety, and probably corner again in the draft. We will be playing uphill on defense all year because of our lack of talent.
So, the sky is not falling. We have a damn good offense that can hang 30 on the board on any given Sunday. We have a young defense that is not getting it done right now. We will win some games, and lose some games. With our schedule there is a good chance we win more than we lose.
Is this team ready to make a Super Bowl run? No, I don't think so. But, at the start of the season, I think we all knew that. Do we have a shot at the playoffs? Absolutley. And, as we have seen before, anything can happen once you're in the post season.
The thing I take away from our season so far is we were not as good as our 3-0 record indicated, but we certainly are not as bad as the Chiefs game would indicate. I still think we go 10-6, or 11-5 and make the playoffs. And I also think we are 1 or 2 impact players away on defense from being real contenders. So, for the time being, let's just sit back and talk about beating the **** out of the Bucs!
