I doubt it would "derail" his campaign, but he would probably lose some people. It would bring back into focus the "first time proud of America" stuff, and would take the focus off of what Obama needs it on, which is the economy.

The "rumor" was manufactured by the bitter racist Larry Johnson at No Quarter. There is no tape. It was an effort to repeat a lie long enough that it doesn't matter if a tape exists, it only matters that it's ingrained in people's minds. Like the muslim smears, and the birth certificate smears, and all the other KKK work they do at that site.
