As of Friday, according to Rassmussen, Obama had a huge swing in independents. At his peak, following the RNC, McCain had taken a 10 point lead in independents. As of Friday, Obama had about a 6 point lead (can't remember the exact number), meaning there was a 16 point swing in the critical independent vote.

Looking at the RCP average, it's not so much Obama is gaining ground,
but that McCain is rapidly losing ground. McCain went from 48.3 on
9/8 to 43.1 today, a drop of 5.2 points. While Obama went from
45.0 on 9/13 to 47.9 today, a gain of 2.9 points.

Its all in the independents. It might be that some have moved from Obama to McCain to undecided, but that is where most of the move is.

As far as the undecideds go, The Gallup poll doesn't really show that.
Right now it is 50% Obama, 42% McCain, leaving 8% in the undecided,
neither, or no opinion category.
Last week they had Obama and McCain tied at 46%. That still leaves
only 8% in the undecided, neither, or no opinion category.
So whoever shifted, independents, Hillary supporters, who ever,
it was basically a 4 point shift up for Obama and a 4 point shift
down for McCain for people who plan on voting for one of the two.

On September 15th:

I actually think that Palin is dragging McCain down. Obama hasn't really done anything in the last few weeks that he hasn't been doing all along.

Palin gave McCain the bounce, especially with the independents, and now is dragging him down.

The economy f*cked him, too, especially after he said the "fundamentals of the economy are good" literally hours before the sh*t hit the fan.

Good point. That is when his numbers really started to drive. He also should have explained the comment MUCH better than the "American worker" garbage.

There wasn't really a better explanation for him to give.
He's said the exact same line over 20 times in the last year. He endorsed all the deregulation over the last 20 years that has lead us here.
He's a Reagan disciple and there is simply no way he can now pawn off the failure of Reaganomics.
Its only made worse by the fact that he's using nearly word for word the same phrase Hoover stated the day Wall St. crashed for the great depression.

He could have made a case that the credit problems and questionable loans (such as NINJA loans) is what has stalled the economy.
I'm not saying that is the only problem with the economy, but as a politician, he did a horrible job addressing/explaining his "fundamentals of the economy are strong" comment.

QFT.
It also doesn't help McCraven's case that the same guy who was behind the move to repeal Glass-Steagall was in charge of his campaign until recently.

I've heard it used by guests on Neil Cavudo and other people talking about the subprime/credit woes over the last six months or so.
A slang term for a loan extended to a borrower with "no income, no job and no assets". Whereas most lenders require the borrower to show a stable stream of income or sufficient collateral, a NINJA loan ignores the verification process.
A NINJA loan is considered to be a type of subprime lending, often found in the mortgage market. While the specifics of any NINJA loan can change, most offer the lender a low initial rate, which is then increased after a few periods of payment. The borrower is hoping for the value of their property to appreciate significantly, allowing them to repay the loan with the newly found equity. However, when the property doesn't appreciate, many borrowers cannot make the repayment. This makes the NINJA loan a very risky proposition for lenders.
