TG is 50 yards short of passing Shannon Sharpe for all time recieveing yards of 10,060. the guy pretty much has every other record at TE.
I say he does pass SS this week. Huard pretty much zeros in on TG.
It's a shame that he'll never see a championship. Maybe the Chiefs will trade him to a team that will compete in the next couple of years. He deserves to finish his carreer winning some hardware. After all, in my opinion he's the best to ever play.
What say you? Does he break the record against the team that helped build the carreer of the current record holder?

I'd like to see it, so I'll hope for it since it's inevitable anyway and I won't be watching the chefs unless they're playing Denver.
Grats to TG, great TE and great career. I'd still take Sharpe over him anyday though.

I don't know if Gonzo is the best every to play the position.
But I do know he's one of the dumbest. How many years has he wasted in KC with Carl and a team that has no clue how to win the playoffs?
Maybe winning championships isn't that important to him or he's just as dumb as a bag of rocks to have wasted his career there.

Because Sharpe was better in every aspect. But hey, we've all seen this thread before and know how it will end, so carry on, I'm gonna stop taking the bait now. Have fun!

No no. No pissing contests intended. No bait. I didn't understand why you would take him "any day" over a player that has produced at a higher level over his carreer.
I knew when starting the thread that it would be an insult TG contest before the end of it. I mean, look at Fontaines post. That was totally idiotic, unfounded and unnecessary. I am prepared for that. I'm have no interest in getting into the SB debate being the single barometer for a single players body of work. Clear thinking people have a wider view of evaluation than that.
In the end, I thought it was a slightly interesting side bar to this weeks game.
What was I supposed to talk about this week, who's gonna win?

I respect a player that stays with his team, championship or not. Too many players bounce around this league and have no passion for the team they are playing for.

ROFL! It probably will happen and I hope it does since I'll be there to see it. Wasn't Tony a big fan of Sharpe?

So what part of my post isn't true? Fair enough I have an opinion about him being dumb enough to stay in KC even while they're clearly rebuilding but apart from a few records Gonzo has wasted his career in KC.
And as to him the best ever? Hardly. You can't make a conclusion on that because you simply don't know how Gonzo has done against top flite competition and top quality defenses in the pressure packed situation that is the playoffs. Admittedly it's not his fault being hamstrung in KC.

I agree, but I'm not talking about respect.
Recent NFL history is littered with high profile players who take a pay cut etc etc just to get with a team that has a chance at winning a SuperBowl, that's the kind of drive you need and want from your players rather than just being content to break a few records.

Tony has done well against the best of the best. You'll have a hard time argueing the opposite. The hole in your theory is that one man doesn't make a team. Some folks really seem to struggle with that concept. Dont let that stop you from challenging the intellect of others though.

There should be a point when enough is enough. Tony Gonzales squandered his talent and wasted his career.
I would take Sharpe over him. Not only for his abilities, but for his personality. :notworthy

I'm a die hard Bronco fan, but my hat is off to Tony. He is an incredible player, has had a magnificant career, and is genuinely a good guy. I would have been proud to call him a Bronco.
I will be at the game this weekend in my orange and blue from head to toe, but if they announce he has broken the record, I will be the first to stand and cheer.
Gonzales is a stud, he deserves the records.

I'd normally say Champ will be on Bowe. However, this defense has yet to show me they're wise enough to have their Pro Bowl CB shadow the oppositions best WR or TE and their other Pro Bowl CB shadow the oppositions #2 WR. When I see Chris Chambers being covered by Paymah, I want to cry.

Bowe has almost always been lining up on the KC offense's left side, so yup, you can expect either Bly or Paymah to be covering him most of the time.

He's right up there stats wise allright but it's also because he was really the only target in KC for years in his prime, so yeah, you expect the stats to be there, but without a ring and performing in the playoffs you can't say he's the all time best. For better or for worse when two guys who are equaly comparable like Sharpe vs Gonzo from the same era, it's always going to be the guy that's got the rings who gets the nod and greater recognition as the better player.
And yes, what's he's done with his career is dumb, and dumber. A couple of years ago when he was due to be a FA he could have WALKED into any organization, he had his pick to go be with the best and get a shot at a championship.
Instead he's got a bunch of numbers and a parade of whole lot of ugly in Croyle, Thigpen, etc etc throwing him off key passes for the last couple of years.
Somehow, I don't think he imagined his career ending up like that. No rings and scrub QBs throwing him lame duck passes.
But you don't have to believe me. Any player will tell you the same. They would gladly hand over plenty of records if it even meant getting a shot at the big game.

I feel for Tony right now...Seems like he is in the crossroads of "I can still play but Im going no where with this team" and "Ive played here all of my life, I dont want to bitch out and go elsewhere like the Patriots just because they are a contender". Don't you think TG would find it bitter sweet to win one his last year as a 1 yr deal kinda plyer with a team like the Packers or the Pats for example after spending so much time with KC?
I think its noble he stayed with them for so long. Now a days you never see anything like that. TG is like Rod in a way, (dont kill me im NOT comparing them), where he has been so consistently good that you almost kinda forget about him.
Anyway, I thinkhe will get the record sunday, not by much..but hell prob get it on a TD. Im more worried about Bowe on Paymah than anything.

Last week, the middle was open for New Orleans to connect on slant patterns. That fits in perfectly with what the Chiefs expect Gonzales to do. If we don't figure out how to shut off the middle of the field, he will ABSOLUTELY get his 50 yards. It's time for McCree to step up...

To just line up stats side by side is a foolish way to compare players. Both were great, but Sharpe played in a run first system for much of his career with receivers that demanded way more attention than anything the Chiefs have ever rolled out.
To say TG is better because he ends up with better stats is short sighted to say the least, but go ahead if you must, after all it's all you have to hang your hat on this year.

what contender would give up a pick for an older TE at this point? In todays NFL draft picks are like gold, they keep team cheaper and younger. I can't think of one team that would sacrifice for a TE.
What teams do you feel would be interested in Gonzo? I was trying to think about it but really couldnt come up with a contender that would do it. I guess if Chiefs are willing to take a really low pick it would be easy, but for a high first day pick no way IMO.

He'll get his 50 yards, and I'll congratulate him. He's a great guy and a great TE. Records are meant to be broken.
As for who I would take, it's a no brainer. Stats wise, they're equal, but Sharpe had that extra element. He could get into an opponent's head and get them out of their game (Derrick Thomas). I don't think I could ever envision Tony Gonzales picking up the phone on the sidelines and calling in the National Guard.

If there is a team whose TE goes down with injury, I could see a trade. Right now I don't really see a team in that position. Shockey is out temporarily but he's not IR'd so that's not possiblity.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A disappointed Tony Gonzalez wants to know why Kansas City coaches refused to throw a short pass his way in the final minutes Sunday, leaving him 3 yards short of the career tight end receiving record.
Gonzalez did have a 10-yard touchdown catch in a 33-19 victory over Denver that snapped the Chiefs' 12-game losing streak. But he wanted to set the receiving record in front of family and fans at Arrowhead Stadium.
"I had my family out there. I wanted to do it in front of the fans, in a home game," Gonzalez said. "It would have been a great way to do it. I'm disappointed by that, for whatever reason my number wasn't called at times."
Coach Herm Edwards said the Chiefs didn't want to take a chance by throwing the ball late in the game.
"After it was a two-possession game, we never got the ball back," Edwards said.
Gonzalez likely will get the record this week at Carolina, far from the fans who chanted "Ton-Y, Ton-Y" when he lay on the ground, the wind knocked out of him, after making the touchdown catch that stretched the NFL TD record for tight ends to 68.
"It was really endearing, the way the fans were supporting me like that," he said. "My wife almost started crying. It was a goose-bump situation."
Gonzalez, a nine-time Pro Bowler, uncharacteristically declined to speak with reporters immediately after the game. On Monday, after a private meeting with Edwards, he remained miffed.
He was thrown only a few passes as the Chiefs stuck mostly to a ground game that included Larry Johnson running for 198 yards and two touchdowns.
Gonzalez finished with 47 yards on three catches, including the one that stretched his NFL touchdown record for tight ends to 68. His last catch went for 23 yards in a drive that ended in a field goal and a 26-16 lead with 3:49 left.
The Broncos drove down for a field goal with 2:06 left and tried an onside kick. The Chiefs got possession, and Johnson carried four straight times for the clinching touchdown.
When Gonzalez was told he was only 3 yards from Shannon Sharpe's record of 10,060 yards receiving, he asked coaches on the sideline if he could get the ball.
"I asked anybody who would listen to me at that point," he said.

I feel bad for the guy too, but he's been a class act in every aspect- on and off the field.
If he went to a contender and won a SB, I'd be happy for the guy.
By the way, whoever said why would any team give up a high draft pick for him b/c of his age is nuts?
The guys stays in great shape, his production hasn't declined, he's taken added steps to prepare himself as he's gotten older, and hasn't been an injury prone player EVER.
The guy could easily play 3 more seasons and be a top 5 TE STILL... hell, maybe even more!
