When is the Super Bowl damnit!

We're averaging something like 4.8 yards a carry or something crazy like that. Obviously, some of that is just not running much... but we're not going to run much, folks. Been saying that since the off-season. Shanahan made up his mind to go pass-crazy this year and we came right out of the gate firing.

We aren't a running team and we won't become one. We'll use the run to keep defenses honest and Cutler will continue flinging the ball all over the place.

Given, this could hurt us if we need to win a playoff-style football game, but we don't have a defense, so we have no choice but to score on every possession.

Hey, Indy won the SB without much of a defense. It's an exception to a rule, but I suppose it's possible.

Again, it'll be fun to watch... if nothing else.

And the 28th ranked defense in the league... I love this team. I love the direction we're headed. I love that we're stockpiling late round draft picks which should give us more depth and (more importantly) special teams talent.

I love that..

But the 2008 edition of the Denver Broncos have a slim hope of winning one game in the playoffs, much less a superbowl. Unless the defense comes together in a huge way, there are just to many chances to slip up. Maybe if Moss becomes the player we drafted him to be and Dumervil regains the ability to actually get near the quarterback. If the linebackers suddenly learn how to tackle and take good angles to the ball carrier. If our safeties shave a couple of hundredths off of their 40 times... then maybe we have a shot. As it stands right now, this team surrenders points in absolute bunches. One of these times it'll be more than the offense can keep up with.

I'll gladly take 'our troubles' over any other team in the NFL right now.

That said, all those items that need curing are definitely curable...other than the Safety situation. But, I think that can be instantly cured by running more man defense and allowing Champ to matchup against #1/#2 threats.

As Popps said, we're still getting our rushing yards. We've had over 100 yards rushing per game. We could run if we wanted but we'd rather throw. At some point we'll run the ball more ala the Raider game (meaning if our defense ever gets things figured out.)

What we have, as far as I can tell, is a team that could very well be a paper tiger. I'm as excited about our offense as anyone, but we've seen what happens to teams with great offenses but zilcho defense. Just look at the Chiefs, or the Colts before Bob Sanders started playing out of his mind. Look at the Minnesota Vikings with Randy Moss. We've won two games on lucky breaks that we should have had put away with a bow on top of it by half-time. We're going to lose a couple of these close ones, and there is going to be much gnashing of teeth on this forum over it unless people recognize not what we have, but what we still need.

And gimmicks like the 3-4 isn't the answer. The only thing that is going to really help us at this point is a major trade for a top flight defensive end, or a tackle who can penetrate.

That's not to say people shouldn't enjoy this season. I'll enjoy it for everything that it's worth. But I'm also prepared for a bitter end to it as I watch quarterbacks being given all day to read the defense and operate pressure free.

You don't become the best offense in the NFL by running the ball and playing clock control. You become the best offense in the NFL (most yards/most points) by airing it out and sprinkling in the run here and there. That's what Denver is doing.

I'm not saying that I'm for or against the way this offense is running at the moment. Rather, I'm just explaining why we have the "best offense in the NFL".

P.S. I love it, and it's fun as hell to watch!

I like how we use Pittman around he goal line.

Our line is getting some good push up front.

Casey Weigman has done a great job in the middle.

I love the Casey pickup this offseason.

Really hoping our D can step it up a few notches as well..

I am enjoying the offensive excitement but know the defense needs more work. I don't want another SB blowout loss. There is still much work to do.

I've been thinking that the reason we've been passing more is not only because we have the QB, WRs, and OL to do it well, but also because the OL is young & needs more time to figure out how to use the ZBS better. 3/5 of our starting line are new to the system.

The coaches see this, and as the season progresses, we'll become more balanced with a better run game, making the offense even more dangerous (less predictable on any given play).

Now, if the defense can improve, we could be looking at great things. A lot has to go our way, but it can happen. I'm cautiously optimistic.

The league, Broncos and everyone are going to do what is "fun" because ultimately this isn't about sports but about entertainment. As much as I want the Broncos to run that is foolish people talk to believe it will happen. The league rules favor a pass happy attack and running the ball, even if that makes sense, is not happening this year.

We've won two games on lucky breaks

No, we've won one game on a lucky break. Why do people talk about the saints game like Gramatica making the field goal would have ended it? There were 2 mins on the clock and we were rolling their defense. I have no doubt in my mind that we would have marched into field goal range and kicked the winning field goal had we needed to.

I do agree that this is a "regular season" team and not one built for the playoffs. That's ok, though. You have to start somewhere.

I've always been defense oriented so I just don't trust this version of the Broncos for the long haul. I enjoy it when the offense is on the field to the same level of how pissed I get when the defense is giving up big chunks of yards. There's too much Air Coryell going on for my tastes. But that's what the next draft is for.
