McCain is suspending his campaign in order to go back to Washington and save the country. Wants Obama to do the same, oh, and cancel those pesky debates. Ha!

Looks like the last thing McCain wants to do is publicly debate Obama on the economy. Better to go back into the Washington weeds and look for cover.
How can people not see through this guy

Those who know him well regard him as a deceitful, violent, unstable liar who collaborated with the enemy and then postured as a hero. Meet the Real John McCain in this special, subscriber-only issue of CounterPunch newsletter, reported by Alexander Cockburn, Jeffrey St. Clair and Douglas Valentine. Why did Cindy McCain become a drug addict who, Phoenix doctors claim, at least three times sought medical attention for injuries consonant with physical violence? Why did Ron and Nancy Reagan shun him and try to derail his political career? Under the terms of the 14th Amendment is McCain actually barred from ever sitting in the Oval Office? Could you imagine the look on McCain's face the first time they ask him, "Please explain how the government will insure that the proper values will be placed on these bad debts?" McCain has been in Washington for 26 years. He's running back to where he feels most comfortable.

Let's face the facts here. These are the members of the Senate Banking Committee:
Christopher J. Dodd Chairman (D-CT)
Richard C. Shelby Ranking Member (R-AL)
Tim Johnson (D-SD) Robert F. Bennett (R-UT)
Jack Reed (D-RI) Wayne Allard (R-CO)
Charles E. Schumer (D-NY) Michael B. Enzi (R-WY)
Evan Bayh (D-IN) Chuck Hagel (R-NE)
Tom Carper (D-DE) Jim Bunning (R-KY)
Robert Menendez (D-NJ) Mike Crapo (R-ID)
Daniel K. Akaka (D-HI) Elizabeth Dole (R-NC)
Sherrod Brown (D-OH) Mel Martinez (R-FL)
Robert P. Casey (D-PA) Bob Corker (R-TN)
Jon Tester (D-MT)
Do you see McCain or Obama's names on there? No. Of course not. They have nothing to do in Washington right now. This is up to that Committee to ask the questions, gather evidence, and then present their findings to the Senate at large to vote up and down, or argue it out further on the floor. The truth is there is no point in McCain or Obama going back to Washington until something comes up for a vote, or floor arguments begin. None of the members of this committee are interested in the input of a Senator who has admitted numerous times that he doesn't know much about the economy. To impart some noble purpose to what McCain is doing is one of the biggest Koolaid cop-outs I've ever heard. The man is getting nailed in the polls and he's bailing out. Rent a clue.
But primarily, he's trying to dodge the debate.

If you look at this in the cold, hard light of day, what McCain is doing here is taking an action which will benefit him personally (ie. dodge the debate) but will be a distraction to the Senate committee that is actually trying to deal with this issue. McCain in Washington will turn this whole debate into a political circus exactly at that moment, as Dodd and Shelby have pointed out numerous times, when they are trying to resurrect an atmosphere of bi-partisanship. This action of McCain's is pure selfish, self-interest.
The fact that he has issued a lame challenge to Obama to do the same is only smearing the same partisan venom all over a Washington that really doesn't need that **** right now. The best thing the two candidates could do right now is stay as far away from Washington as they can.

He is not IMHO dodging the debates. The debates will happen and McCain will do very well. What he is doing is showing leadership if its true or not is obviously up to debate. I imagine it is all for show and not a bad move from that stand point. Alot of Americans will see this as an unselfish act. Taking way from his time and giving his time to America.
Right or Wrong it is a smart move on his part.

That's why they have staffs. I'm sure he gets an abstract of his emails and constituent polling every night. So does every Senator. Besides, there's is nothing he can do as a single Senator anyway. He will be part of a bloc, any which way it shakes out. The only thing he can do in Washington now is cause a distraction.

I was reading some stuff from the Great Depression over the last few days. One thing I noticed was how FDR just seized the issue and made it his own. Everything went through him. He was working the Congress and the media simultaneously while giving numerous radio addresses to the people to explain what was going on. He set the temper of the dialogue and quelled much of the fear. It was a masterful performance. By contrast, George Bush is trying to hide. Just a pathetic exhibition.

He's the executive. That's the leadership branch. It is up to him to set the terms of the national debate and guide the people toward some understanding of what is going on. He has surrendered leadership on the issue to a Senate committee. Basically, he has given a shrug and a smirk. Don't you get the feeling that Dubya has once again reached that position he has reached so many times in his life where he knows he's ****ed things up beyond all recognition and now he's just waiting for Daddy's pals to come in and bail him out again?

Good for McCain. Hell, Obama prefers to vote 'absent' from his next rally,I guess.
Believe me, McCain isn't scared to debate Obama, particularly on foreign policy/affairs. If anything, McCain's only hurting himself by calling it off. He's essentially calling attention to an issue that voters think is his party's fault, so I don't see this as a punk-out or grandstanding. McCain has never been questioned on his motives and character, even by guys like Biden so I think it's genuine, though I have no idea why he's pulling his ads.
Obama has to tread lightly here. Picking on old folks still isn't OK in most of America. The other factor will be exactly how much leadership McCain exhibits while working on this.

Neither of them are on any sort of financial or banking committee, or work for the fed or treasury.
Their jobs are the same thing right now. Sit back, let those who actually make this legislation do their thing, and when they present a bill you read it and decide if you want to vote on it.
Meanwhile they've both also been given the job of showing the American people why they should be president so that we citizens can make the best choice possible come Nov. 4th.
John McCain should get back to doing his job, not grand standing about giving input to committees that he's never served on and openly admitted his own lack of knowledge in regards to.
More like a soldier running into battle to save his buddys.

EXCLUSIVE: LETTERMAN MOCKS MCCAIN CANCELLATION
Wed Sep 24 2008 17:41:58 ET
David Letterman tells audience that McCain called him today to tell him he had to rush back to DC to deal with the economy.
Then in the middle of the taping Dave got word that McCain was, in fact just down the street being interviewed by Katie Couric. Dave even cut over to the live video of the interview, and said, "Hey Senator, can I give you a ride home?"
Earlier in the show, Dave kept saying, "You don't suspend your campaign. This doesn't smell right. This isn't the way a tested hero behaves." And he joked: "I think someone's putting something in his metamucil."
"He can't run the campaign because the economy is cratering? Fine, put in your second string quarterback, Sara Palin. Where is she?"
"What are you going to do if you're elected and things get tough? Suspend being president? We've got a guy like that now!"

The McCain campaign's new urgency about the financial crisis didn't entirely clear his schedule this morning.

The most hilarious thing about this is how McCain is once again standing up for his boy Bush.
He said the senate hasn't come together and needs to reach a bi-partisan stance on the issue.
Well newsflash Johnny! They have. The consensus was that Paulson and Bush can go screw until they bring back something more reasonable.
Now they're working on a legitimate bill, not the cash grab Bush and his cronies tried to work out.

Horrible where Millinocket is at now. I remember a few years ago my family telling me about houses being listed at less than $10,000. Sad part was that one of my jobs during college was pulling asbestos out of the Millinocket paper mill in preparation of large sections being scrapped. Wow small world.
Well I know you and I will survive this melt down just fine, we know how to survive. I can live in the woods if it came to that.

Yes **** the job he swore to do he should flap his gums on the campaign trail instead. :nono:
He hasn't bothered to do the JOB he was elected to do (represent the citizens of Arizona) for almost his entire campaign. Most Absent Senator since he started his campaign, on votes before the Senate.
NOW, he makes a grand gesture of suspending his campaign and flying back to Washington to pass this critical legislation and save the country. However, since he (and Obama) doesn't even sit on any of the committees that are involved in working out the details of this little bill being discussed, it is difficult to see how he can be of any help, and in fact difficult to see how he will not HINDER the discussions that are going on. Progress was being made on working out the details and now McCain is going to inject HIS opinion. He will need to be there for the vote (something I previously mentioned he has been very good at avoiding) and he simply wants to stall the debate and try like hell to get Obama to sign onto this bill so HE will not be the only one the voters can blame if it goes wrong.
The bill will pass , with substantial modifications (CEO pay limits, warrants to reimburse the taxpayers from companies that use it , and some form of mortgage relief for the actual mortgagees), McCain is only needed to be there for the actual vote, and floor discussions, which may not happen for one or two weeks,
This is political grandstanding of the first order.

What happens if McCain doesn't want to debate but Obama refuses to cancel? Does Obama just get to sit on TV and shoot the breeze with Jim Lehrer for two hours?

McBush and the Grand Old Corporate Socialism Party managed to get the rules changed to accommodate Sarah Quaylin - maybe gramps is expecting everyone to roll over and capitulate to his wishes this time as well.

McCain should keep campaigning and just help out on the bailout bill by emailing the other senators with his thoughts.
Oh... right.

What exactly is it you think he's going to do in Washington? Break out his calculator and get this thing figured out? Obama's response is pretty good: a president out to be able to work on one or two issues at the same time.
We are apparently meant to believe that it is merely a coincidence that he wonts to suspend the campaign right when he's getting the living **** kicked out of him.
We have a great opportunity for a litmus test here - will the American people see through this ruse of the McCain machine, the reaction of the nation on this will speak volumes as to our capacity as voters to deal with the serious crisis we are faced with. Have we the people been turned into mindless sheep or can we at the last possible second find the outrage we need to demand our government serve the good of the people once again.
