The Times is up with part II of what caused McCain and his posse to flip their lids over the past couple days ... enjoy ....

On Sunday, in an interview with CNBC and the New York Times, Mr. McCain responded to a question about Mr. Davis’s role in the advocacy group by saying that his campaign manager “has had nothing to do with it since, and I’ll be glad to have his record examined by anybody who wants to look at it.”

McCain's campaign spokesman Steve "full of" Schmidt also went on a lengthy blasting of the New York Times a couple days back in a phone conference, part of which is captured in the beautiful video below.

Today, the New York Times breaks more...

One of the giant mortgage companies at the heart of the credit crisis paid $15,000 a month to a firm owned by Senator John McCain’s campaign manager from the end of 2005 through last month, according to two people with direct knowledge of the arrangement. The disclosure contradicts a statement Sunday night by Mr. McCain that the campaign manager, Rick Davis, had no involvement with the company for the last several years.

....

They said Mr. Davis’s his firm, Davis & Manafort, was kept on the payroll because of Mr. Davis’s close ties to Mr. McCain, the Republican presidential nominee, who was widely expected by 2006 to run again for the White House.

....

Freddie Mac’s roughly $500,000 in payments to Davis & Manafort began immediately after Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae in late 2005 disbanded an advocacy coalition that they had set up and hired Mr. Davis to run, the people familiar with the arrangement said....

....

After the Homeownership Alliance was dissolved, Mr. Davis asked to stay on a retainer, the people familiar with the deal said. Hollis McLoughlin, who was chief of staff to Richard F. Syron, Freddie Mac’s chief executive, arranged for a new contract with Davis & Manafort, at the reduced rate of $15,000 a month...

It's harder to attack the messenger when day two is this strong.

This isn't some B person in his campaign, this is the David Axelrod of his campaign. This IS his campaign. Ouch.

You are the fool. It is true that all politicians stretch facts, cherry pick info that is favorable to them, and distort their opponents record. But in this campaign, only the McCain campaign has been caught telling verifiable, outright lies, lies that any 12 year old with youtube can expose in five minutes. That is different from the game normally played. But go ahead with your six of one is as good as half a dozen of the other crap. That doesn't jive with reality.

Well my little bubbleblower, it time that "tradition" comes to an abrupt halt.

BTW: if anyone on this board is whining and showing fear of change it is you.

McCain's Top Staffers Were Paid by Freddie Mac until Last Month

An article (http://www.newsweek.com/id/160561/output/print) in Newsweek has now revealed that McCain's campaign manager, Rick Davis, was receiving monthly $15,000 checks until last month from Freddie Mac, the mortgage agency that the government recently took over. In addition, the head of McCain's transition team, William Timmons, Sr., was a registered lobbyist for Freddie Mac until this month according to an article (http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601070&sid=aQIOOr9klOnE&refer=home) on Bloomberg News. His firm received $260,000 this year for unspecified work. Although McCain likes to rail against lobbyists and how he will put them in their place, having his campaign being run by people who lobbied for Freddie Mac cuts to the heart of his pitch as a reformer. This story is soon going to be all over the place (see for example, Newsday (http://www.newsday.com/news/nationworld/nation/ny-usrick245855555sep24,0,4654351.story), the NY Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/24/us/politics/w24davis.html), and Roll Call (http://www.rollcall.com/news/28629-1.html)).

This Is HUGE - and It SHOULD End McCain's Bid for the Presidency
John McCain's CAMPAIGN MANAGER, Rick Davis took a leave of absence -- that is, he "stopped taking a salary" -- from his lobbying firm in 2006... but that firm has been accepting FIFTEEN THOUSAND DOLLARS a MONTH until... (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/24/us/politics/w24davis.html?_r=2&hp&oref=slogin&oref=slogin)

LAST MONTH. (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/24/us/politics/w24davis.html?_r=2&hp&oref=slogin&oref=slogin) For, apparently, no reason. No work has been done by Davis's firm on behalf of Freddie Mac since Davis "stopped drawing a salary." John McCain and his campaign claimed as recently as TWO DAYS AGO that Rick Davis has NOTHING TO DO with Freddie Mac. Nothing. And that he has NEVER lobbied for Freddie Mac.

Why was Freddie Mac paying Rick Davis's lobbying firm $15 THOUSAND a MONTH until 24 days ago? (http://www.newsweek.com/id/160561)

THIS IS ****ING HUGE.

No, seriously. If this is not THE NUMBER ONE STORY in the media this week, there is something VERY VERY VERY wrong with the media and with us for not MAKING them cover it as the NUMBER ONE STORY.

Because THIS IS ****ING HUGE.

Connect the dots: McCain... Rick Davis... Freddie Mac... FINANCIAL APOCALYPSE... Government Bail Out.

John McCain = CORRUPTION

He has two choices (aside from simply throwing his hands in the air and admitting to the American people that his campaign is a disaster and, further, properly reflects what his Administration would look like): Either he throws Davis under the bus and claims total ignorance -- which makes him look... totally ignorant; or they circle the wagons and McCain marches into the Valley of Death with a huge, flashing red sign over his head that says: MOST CORRUPT CANDIDATE EVER. And a tattoo on his forehead that reads: PROPERTY OF FREDDIE MAC.

Naturally, it appears the McCain campaign has opted for the latter approach. And the only thing standing between their SUCCEEDING at this outrageous tack and the whole goddamned country erupting into Watergate-sized horror at this... is the media -- and us.

The Timebomb Who Would be President

Those who know him well regard him as a deceitful, violent, unstable liar who collaborated with the enemy and then postured as a hero. Meet the Real John McCain in this special, subscriber-only issue of CounterPunch newsletter, reported by Alexander Cockburn, Jeffrey St. Clair and Douglas Valentine. Why did Cindy McCain become a drug addict who, Phoenix doctors claim, at least three times sought medical attention for injuries consonant with physical violence? Why did Ron and Nancy Reagan shun him and try to derail his political career? Under the terms of the 14th Amendment is McCain actually barred from ever sitting in the Oval Office? Find the answers in CounterPunch newsletter. Subscribe now. ALSO, read David Price on the incredible case of Nicolas Flattes, whom the US government is trying to blackmail into becoming a spook!
