Can we declare a hiatus on the Engleberger hate? All this guy does is come out and play his ass off on every down. So he doesn't get to the quarterback as much as we'd like. You know what he does? He gets the most out of his limited athletic ability. I don't think he should be a starter because of his lack of a pass rush, but I'll take an overachiever on my team any day of the weak. Jarvis would be all pro if he had half John's heart.

You had me till that last comment. It's to early to start questioning his heart. When we drafted this guy his body was physically the equivilent of a college sophmore's. The staph infection he had in college derailed his physical development and it was known from day 1 that Moss was a pick for the future...a project guy who might develop into amother J. Kearse or might not. Let's at least give the guy this year to see where he's at. He has been injured and he's probably just now starting to get to the point where gaining weight is even an option. I was critical of the pick on draft day. But once it's made it's made...so if you're cutting Engleberger slack for overcoming a lack of talent to be average, let's cut Moss some for having to take some time to work into the player they hope he'll be. If the guy dogs it on the field or in practice we'll find out but in the meantime I'll reserve any judgement.

Exactly what my 49'er friend told me the night we acquired him and he was spot on, probably the dumbest scapegoat to pick

If he sucked as bad as everyone likes to pretend, he wouldn't have stuck around while we've had so much turnover on the D-Line. It's not like we're blindingly loyal to these guys.

He's a backup player on almost any other roster. But so are most of the ret of our front seven so he's just the poster boy for what is a very mediocre talent pool.
My only critique of Engelberger, which I still have, is that we over expose him. He'd be a very good backup/ST contributor/goal line teamer. But instead we're trying to use him as a starter.
We have a ton of needs between the hashmarks on our defense. DE, MLB, and S obviously. Probably could use another DT too unless Powell comes back from injury roaring.

I used to hate Engle****ingberger. But I gave that up. The guy has limited skills but plays his ass off. It's not his fault he is a better backup than starter.

Engelberger sucks bottomline. Don't care if he works his ass off because all he does is spin his wheels. He starts because he is the BEST DE at making the reads after the snap but he just plain doesn't have the talent it takes to be a starter in this league. He is decent vs the run and the worst DE in the league for pass rush. It might not be coincidence but he has been a starter on the worst D denver has put out on the field this year and last year. Hard work only gets you so far you do need some physical abilities.

He's always around the ball. He caused the fumble that Webster took to the house. He crashed down on several running plays to make the stop. The guy is our best DE right now.

Popps will be here shortly to explain why the best player on our D-line needs to go so all the guys riding the pine behind him can make us worse.

The guy is our best DE right now.
Which explains why the defense sucks. He has overachieved for his abilities so far but it will catch up as he is as one demensional as Dumerville is and between those 2 we have one player. So in reality Denver trots out 4 DL but they only play like 3.
He isn't the suckiest suck of all the D-line sucks.

What puzzles me is that Engelberger had a few sacks with the 49ers. Since
joining the Broncos, he hasn't had even a few. He's really pretty good against
the run, but I wonder what happened to the sacks . . .

Engleberger is today's Mike Lodish. A solid utility guy that pulls his weight but will not be a premium lineman at any point in his career.

No S@!T! Who ever coached 6 sacks in a season out of him needs to be hired immediately as the DC. In fact he should be sent to NASA and put in the space program.

Engleberger is great.... as a back-up player in running situations only.
He was brought in to be a back-up and we have so little talent, we're forced to start him.
As a starter, he's a joke. He's useless on passing downs.
As for his amazing prowess against the run, we're 15th in the league and getting worse... and we were horrible last year. Yes, clearly that's not all him... but to assume none of it is means you're just not watching the games.
He gets manhandled on a regular basis. He makes his tackles because he stays active and makes a lot of plays down the field.
Again, "hate" is a silly word to use in this regard. But, recognizing that this guy isn't a starting-caliber DE just takes opening your eyes. Shanahan knew it, that's why he's been trying to replace him for two years... drafting guys and signing old beat up guys like Rice/Ekuban.

Perfectly put.
You don't have to "hate" him... it's just that he's a back-up caliber player.
I "hate" the idea that he's a starter. I'm sure he's a pleasant human being and he tries very hard in life. That means nothing once the ball is snapped and he's getting pushed backwards like he's on rollerskates or having his face smashed into the turf.

It's so ridiculous that you single him out, Popps and not the other guys that suck worse than him. If we had a good defensive line, he'd be a backup but he'd still make the team.

K,
If he was a back-up, I wouldn't single him out... and if you've followed my posts at all, I've called out Dumervil for disappearing in big games, I've called out Moss and Crowder for showing nothing and I've basically said the jury is out on Thomas, but he's not setting the world on fire, either.
The problem I have with Engleberger is that he's just so useless on any passing down that it's a major hinderance to the team. He can't even get his hands in the air. Has he EVER knocked a ball down? The guy has 3 sacks in three years with the team, much of which he was a stater.
C'mon, man.... I'm not singling him out and it's a nice thing that he's a try-hard guy. That's wonderful. But, I'm goddamned sick of seeing him get his face mushed into the turf on almost every single play while QBs sit in the pocket for 6 seconds.
No, it's not all his fault... he's just a CONSTANT on a D-line that is arguably the worst in the league.

You're like the guy that thinks because you have a top ranked offense but horrible defense that somehow your team should be considered a top tier team. Whereas if the tables were turned in respect the levels of the O and D, you wouldn't bat an eye about that team being ranked in the lower 15.
Same with Engleberger. You take one aspect of his game and act like he's **** because of it, while in all other aspects of the position, the guy is actually pretty damn good. It's like you don't know how to evaluate a football player and just want the flashy stats (in this case sacks) to make your case.

Not to be an a**hole, but, yes, last year against the Bears.

Dumervil hurts a pinky and literally turns invisible. Literally. He's gone.
I know, I know, 'double-teamed only pass rusher blah blah blah.' I love Doom, but stop making excuses for the kid while whining about JE. Engelberger has made some eye-opening plays in these first few weeks and deserves credit.

I think people just don't like him cause he's white.
Clearly because of this, he's just a high energy/motor guy getting by on effort alone and doesn't really possess any real football/athletic skills.
