View Full Version : Obama's Social Security Whopper
He tells Social Security recipients their money would now be in the stock market under McCain's plan. False.

It makes sense trying to scare McCains own age group into thinking that. That's what makes trying to say one side is dirtier then the other. Both sides seem plenty dirty to me.

So, an ad on issues that is basically true -- McCain was for privatizing SS before he as against it, even if Bush's plan would've been phased in -- is the same as a constant onslaught of character assasinations that aren't the least bit based on reality?

Start praying. Obama is up up by 5 and is expected to increase next week before the debates, at which point mccane is done for. The POW argument ain't going to do squat for him at the debates.

He ain't my boy.
His POW past doesn't mean a whole lot regarding becoming President, IMHO.

actually McCains plan wouldn't have allowed people in the age group in question to put there social security into the stock market. Had he been talking to people under 55 then yes.

meh-neither one is worth a damn-I'm voting for Bill Cosby:
I HAVE DECIDED TO BECOME A WRITE-IN CANDIDATE.
HERE IS MY PLATFORM:
(1) 'Press 1 for English' is immediately banned. English is the official language; speak it or wait at the border until you can.
(2) We will immediately go into a two year isolationist posture to straighten out the country's attitude. NO imports, no exports.
We will use the 'Wal-Mart's policy, 'If we ain't got it, you don't need it.'
(3) When imports are allowed, there will be a 100% import tax on it.
(4) All retired military personnel will be required to man one of our many observation towers on the southern border. (six month tour) They will be under strict orders not to fire on SOUTHBOUND aliens.
(5) Social security will immediately return to its original state. If you didn't put nuttin in, you ain't gettin nuttin out. The president nor any other politician will not be able to touch it.
(6) Welfare - Checks will be handed out on Fridays at the end of the 40 hour school week and the successful completion of urinalysis and a passing grade.
(7) Professional Athletes --Steroids - The FIRST time you check positive you're banned for life.
(8) Crime - We will adopt the Turkish method, the first time you steal, you lose your right hand. There is no more life sentences. If convicted, you will be put to death by the same method you chose for your victim; gun, knife, strangulation, etc.
(9) One export will be allowed; Wheat, The world needs to eat. A bushel of wheat will be the exact price of a barrel of oil.
(10) All foreign aid using American taxpayer money will immediately cease, and the saved money will pay off the national debt and ultimately lower taxes. When disasters occur around the world, we'll ask the American people if they want to donate to a disaster fund, and each citizen can make the decision whether it's a worthy cause.
(11) The Pledge of Allegiance will be said every day at school and every day in Congress.
(12) The National Anthem will be played at all appropriate ceremonies, sporting events, outings, etc.
Sorry if I stepped on anyone's toes but a vote for me will get you better than what you have, and better than what you're gonna get. Thanks for listening, and remember to write in my name on the ballot in November.
God Bless America !!!!!!!!!!!
Bill Cosby!!!!!!!!

Yeah, sure. Factcheck is really enjoying the GOP smoke being blown up their asses on this one.
McCain and Bush wanted to stick a chunk of social security money paid in by people under 50 into privatized investments in the market. It was the first step to a much larger privatization they'd both talked about quite a bit.
The big thing here is this though. When you collect social security you aren't receiving the money you paid in while working, you are receiving the money someone else paid in because we're so grossly behind on the social security fund (thanks to Reagan borrowing from it profusely).
So if the money current workers were putting in there just took a gigantic hit do you really think that wouldn't have "trickled down" to those receiving social security now?
Factcheck should work a little harder to check the facts.

Odumba used this fear tactic in his DNC speech with the "Republican's want to gamble away your retirement..." garbage.
First off social security isn't "your retirement". If it is you are the dumbest SOB on earth. It is a supplement to your retirement.
Secondly I ask the question to everyone, Democrats and Republicans alike...In your 401k's, 403b's, IRA and other tax deferred retirement accounts do invest 100% in US Treasuries and interest bearing cash balance or do you invest a lot in equities? And do you feel like you are "gambling away your retirement" by doing so?
We all know the answer; you invest with a good chunk in equities unless you are getting close to retirement.
This pitiful fear tactic is exactly that....just pitiful. Praying on the completely ignorant for votes.

Yup, sounds like some serious exaggeration.
But that doesn't mean Obama lies and exaggerates more than McCain. He does not. McCain's lies and exaggerations are worse, but the McCian-loving media won't call him on his BS. They're SOOOO obsessed with being "even-handed," they won't call a lie a lie!
If John McCain said "The world is flat," the media would report, "Candidates' views differ on shape of planet." :~ohyah!:

actually ... the money currently paying social security is from current payroll taxes that, under the Bush-McCain proposal, would've been phased into private accounts and invested stocks (OT: who benefits from that is remarkably similiar to his ''bailout plan'').
the bottom line to my point though, is this is an issue based attack. this isn't an ''obama wouldn't see troops without cameras'' clear cut lie on character.

SS is money given to the government with the implicit trust that it will mature in the safest way possible.
An intelligent retirement plan is composed of high risk/return investments and lower risk, safe investments. For most intelligent people SS composes a nice chunk of the later group, letting them feel safe to invest into the market looking for greater returns while also stimulating our economy.
Solvent and stable SS is an important driving factor for our economy.
And again, this is BS. It'd have some merit to it if the current retirees weren't being paid out of our paychecks instead of from the theoretical trust that Reagan burnt up like a college kid on spring break.

HORSE $HIT..........SS money was given to the government as a tax that most people were never suppose to see. When the Raw Deal came about the SS payout started at age 65 and the average life expectancy was around 58.
It was a tax polished up to fool the average idiot into thinking they were taking care of them.

SS isn't a tax - it's an insurance policy.
And the "Raw Deal" saved the American middle class after your boy Hoover crashed the financial system the last time around in 1931.

That is so incredibly factually false. SS was originated to pay retirees, pay unemployed and gave a lump-sum benefit at death. It was a bottom up economic theory that lifted us out of Depression unlike the trickle down that is putting us in one.

I saw somewhere that for each $100 taken out if SS and put into the
stock market when the bill to privatize SS was voted on it would now
be worth $88. Where-as leaving it in SS it will now be worth $125.

SS isn't insurance and it was never a trust fund. Those are euphemisms to obscure the fact that it's a pay-as-you-go transfer scheme from the working younger poorer to the retired older richer. Nothing more.

Fact the Democrats controlled BOTH the Senate and the House for 6 of the 8 years Reagan was in office. The only time they did not was when the Republicans took the Senate from 85 to 87. So if you are going to blame the Reagan years for spending the money in the SSTR then you should understand that it was your precious Dems who spent the sh*t out of everything, they are the ones responsible for approving the budget and for borrowing to pay for programs, the President has no control over any of those things. Not one dime can be spent from the federal Treasury without the approval of Congress. Then again the SS Administration has been lying to the American public about SS for years.
The fact that you even think that SSTR consists on tangible economic assets shows how ignorant you are on the entire subject. FDR designed SS as a slush fund for the government, nothing more.

Gawd, as me mum used to say, "More full of **** than a Christmas turkey." I see those "retired older richer" folks in my job every day. If they didn't have SSI they would be living under a bridge, just like they were when FDR put through the Act. I'm not a democrat.
And both parties spend like a valley girl with daddy's platinum card. But at least the dems put it in human interest projects, not friend's pockets like the GOP has done the last few years.
Reagan is the one who dramatically cut taxes without cutting spending though, requiring us to start raiding our own reserves. More deficit spending than every president before him combined in fact. That is where this whole mess really got its start.
So your idea of humanity is to let old people who have worked all their life starve to death when they are too old to work anymore?
