The Obama and McCain campaigns have agreed to an unusual free-flowing format for the three televised presidential debates, which begin on Friday, but the McCain camp fought for and won a much more structured approach for the questioning at the vice-presidential debate, advisers to both campaigns said Saturday.

At the insistence of the McCain campaign, the Oct. 2 debate between the Republican nominee for vice president, Gov. Sarah Palin, and her Democratic rival, Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr., will have shorter question-and-answer segments than those for the presidential nominees, the advisers said. There will also be much less opportunity for free-wheeling, direct exchanges between the running mates.

McCain advisers said they had been concerned that a loose format could leave Ms. Palin, a relatively inexperienced debater, at a disadvantage and largely on the defensive.

That would be a mistake. Which one has had more gaffes in the past month - Palin or Biden?

"Stand up, Chuck" (to stuck-in-a-wheelcrair Chuck), "Hillary would be a better choice" (for VP), Higher taxes=patriotism, etc.

And, frankly, the more the liberals gang up on Palin, the more women will reflexively come to her defense.

Less structure would have been worse for Biden since he keeps sticking his foot in his mouth. And most are going to sense when the girl is getting mistreated. I noticed the libs are bussing in Gwen Ifill to moderate the debate so they can put a female face behind their attacks.

Well hopefully nothing like war, nuanced foreign policy negotiations, devastating natural disasters, or fixing the worst economic meltdown in decades will happen so Palin won't have to deal with the tough issues...

Palin's spent the past month in Dick Cheney's secret hideout, kinda hard for her to make too many gaffes from there.

Yep.

McBush is probably asking them to limit the questions to aerial wolf hunts and issuing ice fishing permits.

Gotta laugh at Texan Bigot's suggestion that Biden could top Caribou Barbie's performance in the prom queen's ABC interview when it comes to "gaffes."

This is an interesting article (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/21/us/politics/21debate.html?_r=1&hp=&pagewanted=print&oref=slogin) about the preparations on both sides for the debates.

I think this is the most excited I've ever been to see a presidential debate. I hope it will be good.

McCain Wants To Delay VP Debate

CNN reports that the McCain camp is looking to schedule the presidential debate for next Thursday, the day that the VP debate is scheduled for, and then delay the VP date to some unnamed date.

Freakin' hilarious.

So I guess we see the end game McCain has been playing for with his recent posturing. Quick! Find a way to hide Palin from the VP debate!

Not the most reliable source, and certainly partisan ... so take it as you will ..., but...

McCain Camp insiders say Palin "clueless"

Capitol Hill sources are telling me that senior McCain people
are more than concerned about Palin. The campaign has held
a mock debate and a mock press conference; both are being described as "disastrous." One senior McCain aide was quoted as saying, "What are we going to do?" The McCain people want to move this first debate to some later, undetermined date, possibly never. People on the inside are saying the Alaska Governor is "clueless."

ROFL!

That's what McCheese gets for doing the vetting after the selection of a running mate.

(But he's been dragging his feet everything else, so at least he's consistent, I guess.) :D

It's hilarious, but it's also offensive inasmuch as this assclown is apparently so grandiose and self-important that he feels entitled to change the rules to suit himself.

What's he going to do for act three - ask to have the elections postponed until after the holidays?

I think both VP candidates need to be careful.

All Biden needs to do with her is focus on his own answers, show that he is informed, astute, and capable while leaving Palin to sink herself with no help from him. This will be the kind of match where the other guy is so busy punching himself in the face that you don't have to come out of your corner. ;D

Yep - it's going to be like watching a debate between a doctoral candidate and a third-grader (unless the rethugs manage to keep changing the rules of engagement until the only questions allowed pertain to field dressing moose and procedures for issuing ice fishing permits.) ;)

Palin is living, breathing proof that John McCain lies when he claims to put this country first over politics. She makes Dan Quayle look like Albert Einstein with a better haircut.

Obama has already put forth a vision for how to handle this crisis. Your so-called clued-in candidate--who admits he doesn't know much about economic matters--has proposed nothing. Just a lot of grandstanding.

HOLY WOW

from Kathleen Parker -- one of Palin's biggest supporters up until now -- at the National Review:

http://article.nationalreview.com/print/?q=MDZiMDhjYTU1NmI5Y2MwZjg2MWNiMWMyYTUxZDkwNTE=

It was fun while it lasted.

Palin’s recent interviews with Charles Gibson, Sean Hannity, and now Katie Couric have all revealed an attractive, earnest, confident candidate. Who Is Clearly Out Of Her League.

No one hates saying that more than I do. Like so many women, I’ve been pulling for Palin, wishing her the best, hoping she will perform brilliantly. I’ve also noticed that I watch her interviews with the held breath of an anxious parent, my finger poised over the mute button in case it gets too painful. Unfortunately, it often does. My cringe reflex is exhausted.

Palin filibusters. She repeats words, filling space with deadwood. Cut the verbiage and there’s not much content there. Here’s but one example of many from her interview with Hannity: “Well, there is a danger in allowing some obsessive partisanship to get into the issue that we’re talking about today. And that’s something that John McCain, too, his track record, proving that he can work both sides of the aisle, he can surpass the partisanship that must be surpassed to deal with an issue like this.”

(my note: What?)

When Couric pointed to polls showing that the financial crisis had boosted Obama’s numbers, Palin blustered wordily: “I’m not looking at poll numbers. What I think Americans at the end of the day are going to be able to go back and look at track records and see who’s more apt to be talking about solutions and wishing for and hoping for solutions for some opportunity to change, and who’s actually done it?”

If BS were currency, Palin could bail out Wall Street herself.

(my note: BAM!)

If Palin were a man, we’d all be guffawing, just as we do every time Joe Biden tickles the back of his throat with his toes. But because she’s a woman — and the first ever on a Republican presidential ticket — we are reluctant to say what is painfully true.

What to do?

McCain can’t repudiate his choice for running mate. He not only risks the wrath of the GOP’s unforgiving base, but he invites others to second-guess his executive decision-making ability. Barack Obama faces the same problem with Biden.

Only Palin can save McCain, her party, and the country she loves. She can bow out for personal reasons, perhaps because she wants to spend more time with her newborn. No one would criticize a mother who puts her family first.

Do it for your country.

(my note: diehard palin conservatives want her out. DAMN! )

I read a conservative saying something like this, and I wonder if she's saying it just for partisan reasons, or if she really is off in her own little universe where Biden is doing just as badly as Palin.

I was about to mention the same thing. Biden misspeaks at times, but it is about irrelevant things like saying "television" instead of radio (on the other hand, McCain flubs on actual policy matters--i.e. constantly and almost willfully confusing sunnis and shias, mistiming the surge etc.). Palin simply doesn't have any working knowledge of the issues--none. To say Obama has the same problem with Biden as McCain does with Palin is laughable at best.
