View Full Version : Clady fined for "chop block"

Weak call on the field, but it was technically a chop block by definition. I still can't believe they fined him 5K for it?

http://www.denverpost.com/sports/ci_10510705

Ryan Clady has officially been initiated as an NFL left tackle.

The NFL fined the rookie $5,000 for his second quarter chop block against the San Diego Chargers. In truth, it was left guard Ben Hamilton who went low against the defender while Clady went high for a two-hand push on the double-team. But it was Clady who drew the 15-yard penalty and the fine.

"I thought it was a little iffy," Clady said. "I barely touched the guy."

Clady then smile and said: "Ben's going to help me out (with the fine), though."

It was the first time Clady has been fined and the second Broncos player fined this year.

Brandon Marshall was fined two weeks pay in exchange for having his season-opening suspension reduced from three games to one.

It better be, this is beyond ridiculous. Even both tv announcers said it was a weak call on the penalty itself. This freaking Goodell idiot has let this job go to his head.

He has even punished and fined players for incidents the court has not made a decision on yet. I mean whatever happened to due process and your innocent until proven guilty. Commissioner GODell needs to back off.

Goodell probably rationalizes it by making it part of the Safety push he is emphasizing this year. I would look for a lot of calls and fines on it in the next few weeks against all teams.

It was a good call during the game. It was weak and certainly didn't injure or have the intent to injure, but by rule it was the correct call. I really didn't think they would fine him b/c it lacked a nasty intent. Oh well, like most have mentioned the fine isn't going to break Ryan Clady or Ben Hamilton... but having one of these fines on record could make the next one (if) sting a whole lot more!

Wait....I didn't see the play, but if Hamilton took out the legs then why is Clady getting fined?

I wish all of you some how could have a chance to experience the United States durning the 1950's thru the 1970's we did not have those clamp down controls and political correctness then.

Just yesterday I took a wrong exit in San Diego and ended up at the gate to Miramar air-force base I asked the young kid maning the gate how to get back to La Jolla. His response was I want to see your drivers license with a scowl on his face. I said dude all I need is directions I'm not a criminal. His response was I need to see if you are driving legally. I said I'm not on your base yet nor do I intend to go on your base so tell me under what authority do you ask for my license. He said sorry sir turn in the parking lot and get on 15 N and take the next exit.... We have to call them on their bull shiit, if enough of us did they would back off. You young people would not believe how wonderful it was to live in this great country durning those great years of the 50's to the 70's. If you did you would be outraged at what has happened too.

Oh man, nice post. I had a similar situation occur to me soon after 9/11. Was on the George Washington Parkway in Northern Virginia on the other side of the Potomac from DC one night with a bunch of friends (all of us male and young). The exits can be a little confusing sometimes and I ended up in front of the CIA headquarters gate, but we had already begun the uturn and CLEARLY were headed back to the parkway. We were pulled over and they drew guns on us, it was a nightmare. I said, man, we took the wrong exit and I'm just looking to get into Georgetown. Also, some of my favorite spots to hang out in around the city suddenly became off limits or under extreme supervision. It's sad.

Honestly I wouldn't mind a couple of our OL getting some fines this year. When we were the #1 rushing team in the nfl we had some mean SOB's up front and all the DL knew it. They were more worried about their knees then making the tackle.

Congrats Ryan, you just took a step up in my book.

Yea, I think he has to initiate the fine just to project that he is consistent with his punishment. However, it wouldn't surprise me at all that Clady appeals and wins it. A child of 4 could see no harm was intended, nor inflicted.

The problem with this stupid fine is that it sets Clady up for a much, much higher fine upon his second "infraction."

I haven't seen it since the game replay, but I kinda thought Clady's hand on his shoulder was half-intended to stabilize the guy from Hamilton's cut block ... the ball was gone by then after all ???

ACTUALLY what Cross said in response to "he barely touched him" was anytime two lineman engage a defensive lineman, one low and one high this will be called. Good was not in the sentence.

These people that won't spank their children when they obviously need it because obviously that is child abuse make me want to puke.

Because they won't discipline their children that kid's teacher and others around these children have to put with a bunch of BS from these kids because they know the teacher can't spank them and they have learned no respect for authority at home.

Teacher's are forced to use time out as their only form of discipline. I'll tell you what, my dad used to take TIME OUT

Sometimes a kid needs his but popped a time or two and that is not child abuse.

I would appeal the fine. When I watched the reply, it wasn't even really a push by Clady. It was more like that wasn't even his blockin assignment and the other two started moving his way and he sort just reached out to make sure nobody was coming INTO him. His hands really didn't even push off, just more of a safeguarding his position and they were only on the defender for a fraction of a second. Simply pathetic call on the field and even worse, a mind blowing move by wannabe NFL commish. That fine is downright abuse of power and borderline illegal.

That's f'n ridiculous. Clady barely touches the guy and certainly doesn't shove him or block him in the way he could've as an offensive lineman. His hands made contact with Igor's jersey and it was like fencing, an electric current was connected so AUTOMATIC FLAG!!! The penalty itself was immensely borderline, but to fine him for it is downright laughable. Pathetic. Abhorable. Unconscionable. If that's a fineable offense, then ***** ************* ****** let's fine every lineman in the league for making a routine block. Holy **** the center's hands made contact with the nose tackle! Fine that hoodlum!

Uh Saints defenders, you better watch those knees, Clady is a chop blocking crazy man, we can't control him, he's like totally out of control.

Now you're talking! If they drop all 11 defenders into coverage instead of risking rushing Cutler, that'll certainly cut down on his passing stats!
