One upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary, over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore. While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly, there came a tapping, as of someone gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door. "Tis some visitor," I muttered, "tapping at my chamber door -- only this and nothing more."

Ahh, distinctly I remember, it was in the bleak December, and each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor. Eaglerly I wished the morrow; -- vainly I had sought to borrow, from my books sucrease* of sorrow, sorrow for that crying whore. For that rare and putrid maiden whom the angels named The Whore. Nameless here, forever more.

*sucrease means an end.

Subject: Texas Poetry....

The finals of the National Poetry Contest last year came down to two finalists. One was a San Francisco State University graduate from an upper-crust family; well-bred, well-connected and all that goes with it. The other finalist was a redneck from Texas A & M. Go figure.
The rules of the contest required each finalist to compose a four-line poem in one minute or less, and the poem had to contain the word “Timbuktu.”

The San Francisco State graduate went first. About thirty seconds after the clock started he jumped up and recited the following poem:

“'Slowly across the desert sand
Trekked the dusty caravan.
Men on camels, two by two
Destination -- Timbuktu.”

The audience went wild! How, they wondered if the redneck could top that?! The clock started again and the redneck sat in silent thought. Finally, in the last few seconds, he jumped and recited:

“Tim and me, a-huntin' went.
Met three whores in a pop-up tent.
They was three, we was two,
So I bucked one and Timbuktu”

My god. I think I'd have to come down w/ a case of the anthrax or something. 1 day off for christmas? Hardly worth having a holiday.

Why people do things beyond that which is socially accepted as the norm has a lot to do with how they are raised. As humans our emotions are balled up together and rarely, during traumatic or major emotional events in our lives, do we experience only one emotion at any given time. This powerful attack of emotions leads to a lot of confusion within the human psyche, particularly when it comes to defining who oneself truly is. Toni Morrison and Joseph Conrad delve into the themes of identity in the novels Sula and Heart of Darkness. While many critics and authors of note have attempted to analyze the duality of identity within both of these novels, I am going to focus more on how the identity issues of the main characters in the novels came into existence. For instance, was the death of Chicken Little more traumatic for Nel or Sula? Or how did Marlow’s romanticism with Imperial Britain affect the way he saw the so-called savages of Africa or the women of his own kind? The relationship between upbringing, emotional confusion and the natural progress of life itself lead to the problematic and inevitable identity confusion found so often in literature and in life.
In Sula, there are many instances of emotional conflict or confusion that foreshadow later behaviors with the characters. With grief, there is Eva’s loss of Plum. She grieved for her son, felt pity for him and sad for him. She wanted desperately to help him but did not know what she could do. Some would say her actions were cruel and harsh, yet she did them with all the love that a mother can muster. She did not wish to see her son in misery as he was in, nor did she want to see him waste away what life he had left. In her mind, the only thing to do, indeed the just thing to do, would be to put him out of his misery like a rancher will do to a horse or cattle. One could argue that life itself, for Plum, was cruel and unusual punishment after what he went through in the war. When confronted by her daughter about what really occurred with Plum, Eva feels the guilt and the pain of what she had to do and Morrison subtly points out the inner conflict raging within when she writes, “When Eva spoke at last it was with two voices.,”(72). It is as if Eva had been trying to forget, to close out that part of her life because she did not want to face the horror of what she had done and who she was.
Another event in Sula that causes identity confusion later in Nel’s life is the Chicken Little incident. As Chicken Little goes under the water, both Sula and Nel watch in silence. Nel nonchalantly remarks “Somebody saw,” (61) and Sula panics. Morrison does not go into too much about how Nel feels at the time until Nel is left to console Sula. For Sula, Morrison depicts fear, remorse, sadness, but for Nel an entirely different picture is painted. After Sula returns from Shadrack’s house and Nel speaks to her, the words and tone of her sentence shifts several times. It begins with a comforting tone, as much for Sula I think as for her, “Sh. Sh. Don’t, don’t. You didn’t mean it. It ain’t your fault,” (63). Immediately after this, Nel begins to worry which is followed by a sense of urgency, “Come on, le’s go, Sula. Come on, now,” (63). Next, she begins to think ahead about both a witness to the crime and any evidence that could lead the police to them, “Was he there? Did he see? Where’s the belt to your dress?” (63). All Nel’s life she had been confused about how she felt when Chicken Little died. What she mistook to be “maturity, serenity and compassion,” turned out to be “joyful stimulation,” (170). It is not until she fully realizes how she felt at that moment that she begins to discover who she is.
Chicken Little’s death was the beginning of the separation Nel and Sula later undergo. At the funeral both the girls “…did not touch hands or look at each other…” (64) Symbolically this shows the start of the gap between the two children and their divergent paths their lives would take. Each girl had different feelings from the death of Chicken Little and because of these feelings wrapped up in the guise of fear; they go about their lives in a much different manner. The more controlled Nel takes a stronger command of her life and fits back into the accepted society of Medallion’s Bottom. Sula on the other hand, was not as in control and because of that left, perhaps to forget, perhaps, as David M. Heaton suggests in “Toni Morrison: Overview” she left to “indulge her fancy.” (Contemporary Novelists, 6th ed.). Heaton also suggests that Sula dropping Chicken Little into the river was “a weird inadvertence,” (Contemporary Novelists, 6th ed.) instead of an accident. I think that because Sula was the one that dropped Chicken Little it was an accident. Had Nel dropped him in, given her feelings about the event, I would have agreed with the statement. Sula was emotionally distraught afterwards and I do not believe that a person that subconsciously wanted to cause harm would feel such remorse and sorrow afterwards.
The Chicken Little murder was significant for Nel in many ways. It changed the course of her life. She had done something terribly wrong, but worse than that, she had felt no remorse from it. The events of her life afterwards now are more reminiscent of a typical woman’s life of the time period. It was as if she were compensating for the act by being the best person she could after being involved in one of the worst things imaginable. Maybe she was in denial, denial of doing something evil? I would argue that she is in denial of her emotional feelings – that’s why, when talking to Eva she asks herself “What had she felt then….and then the little boy swinging out over the water?” (Sula, 170). She had to think back, to open that closed part of her mind that she had chosen all those long years not to look into.
In Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, the central character Marlowe is very troubled, like most people I think, but specifically because of his Imperial conditioning and the conflict of what he feels in his heart and what he sees with his eyes while in Africa. Marlowe has this inner struggle with himself about what he holds morally valuable and what he has been taught. The Imperial Age of Europe was a time of rampant racism and vulgar abuses of power. Marlowe had lived most of his life in the romanticized part of Imperialism….back home. He had not been privy to what that home life “required” abroad to be maintained. Upon venturing to Africa, Marlowe finds a world all too real and all too “dark” as the battle between light and dark rages within the confines of his soul and the outer world around him.
When Marlowe begins his tale, he deems it important to inform his listeners of some background information about him. He tells his fellow seamen “when I was a little chap….at that time there were many blank spaces,” (Heart of Darkness, 22). Then he refers to the North Pole and how he will not now go there because the “glamour’s off”(22). Right there, from the start of the story, the loss of romanticism with imperialism begins. John A. McClure writes in “Late Imperial Romance” that Conrad's version of the common turn-of-the-century trope of a world despoiled of all possibility for romance” (Raritan, Spring 91). He is compelled to do this I think by his nature of being raised in an imperial society; a society which puts itself above others. The nature of imperialism is elitist and racist at its core, believing one society is stronger or better or more moral than another. Michael Ignatieff eloquently states “Conrad observed that imperialism, when looked at closely, is not a pretty thing,” (Social Research, 77). Marlowe too was elitist and racist at his core however, because he is human and not some institution or vague idea concocted by man (or woman), there also lies conflict within him about the very idea of imperialism and racism. He does not come to discover this until he is alone in Africa, alone with the “darkness”. It is interesting to note that he also mentions that this journey “seemed somehow to throw a kind of light on everything about [him],” (Heart of Darkness, 22). This could imply that the conflict of the past had been solved by the time the story was being told.
So when does Marlowe begin to question the very nature of imperialism? I think it begins when he gets to Africa but does not take hold of him and begin to truly occupy his thoughts until his helmsman dies. Up until that point, Marlowe was indifferent towards the effects of imperialism on Africa even if it touched him in some small way. Once his helmsman dies however he begins to question why he is even there. “There was a sense of extreme disappointment, as though I had found out I had been striving after something altogether without a substance,” (Heart of Darkness, 63). The character Kurtz, whom Marlowe is literally obsessed with, is Conrad’s way of expressing imperialism. Kurtz himself was a man who was there in Africa to “civilize” the natives. In effect, Kurtz was the tool of imperialism and Marlowe was fascinated with that up to the point. When he begins to fancy Kurtz as dead, the pity he fears I think is more derived not from the inability to meet this “great man” but instead the inability to ask and have answered those questions that drive him. He idealized Kurtz the way men of the time idealized imperialism. Kurtz is to Marlowe what Sula is to Nel, opposite sides of the same coin.
How Marlowe feels is directly related to how he is raised. Ignatieff explains in his discourse on imperialism that it has changed but really the idea is still there. “Central to this assumption is the idea that the interventions of the post-1989 period were humanitarian rather than imperial in their essential motivation,” (Social Research, 77). If it still latently exists in the new world that we live in, then one must conclude that in Marlowe’s world, imperialism was taught not as racist or wrong, but as something that the Europeans were morally obligated to do. The European way of thinking of the time filtered down to the individual, particularly those that traveled well throughout the empires of the day. As it is in today’s time, those that are well educated or highly experienced in world affairs will generally have a different perspective than those blindly accept any given idea.

The women in Heart of Darkness have a very minor and insignificant role. This is a reflection of the imperial ideology of the time period in which women were adored, but subservient. They were lauded by men in public yet privately beaten and ordered around. The “two women…knitting black wool,” (24), are an example of how Conrad portrays women. Not two women, chopping down tree’s and making a clearing, or two women trudging through the jungle in search of ivory, but two women sitting in some company offices knitting wool. Curious too that Conrad feels the need to mention “black wool” (24), as if to imply the subservient women were held in some ways in no more regard than the black savages of Africa. Marlowe feels a bit of disdain for the women, yet apprehension from them as well. Why would a glance from an old woman in some offices bother him? Possibly due to his upbringing in England and the role women played there was completely foreign to these women, who lived on the Dark Continent, knitting wool, “one introducing, introducing continuously…..the other scrutinizing the cheery and foolish faces with unconcerned old eyes” (25). These women were the antithesis of what women were supposed to be. Not caring, indeed having very little care for anyone other than themselves.
All of this leads to his identity issues. When confronted with the nature of imperialism and what it takes to make imperialism plausible, Marlowe does not see the need for it. Though he was still a racist – referring to Africans as ****ers even after all the questions he asked himself going up the Congo - he was by no means the racist that Kurtz was. He would not himself have exclaimed “Exterminate all the brutes,” (66) as Kurtz had but he still thought of Africans as nothing more than ****ers. He did not see any particular “need” to obliterate by genocide an entire “race.” This can be seen when Marlowe is recounting the part about the “clean-shaved man, with an official manner…,” (88) who wanted the documents Kurtz possessed, Marlowe mocks the way the clean-shaved man says “its ‘territories’,” (89). He goes on to say that Kurtz’s information “did not bear upon the problems of commerce or administration” (89). This says wonders for someone raised in an imperialistic society. Someone who believed in imperialism fully – someone like Kurtz for example – would have immediately given up the documents so that the work could be continued. He would not have ripped the post script off the “Suppression of Savage Customs” (89), nor would he have argued with the many about releasing the papers to him.
Marlowe and Nel both end up resolving, at least partially, their identity issues. Nel comes to know herself more fully after the death of Sula and sometimes that is an unfortunate learning tool but many times it is extremely efficient. The accidental murder of Chicken Little shocked Sula to the core as she feared what she had done but shocked Nel far more subtly in that she did not fear what she had done but derived a stimulated pleasure from it. Marlowe too comes to know himself better after the death of Kurtz, though I think the differences are clear. Nel loved Sula whereas Marlowe was merely obsessed with Kurtz but held no real love for the man, nor, I think did he care to know him any more than he did once he met him. When Kurtz died, Marlowe saw perhaps a glimpse of his life and where it was headed and did not like what he saw. Thus, he left Africa and ended up on an ocean going steamer recounting his tale to his fellow seamen. His tone of voice is different when directly speaking to his fellow seamen than when he is – as Conrad would say – discoursing about his journey. This shows that the romanticism he once felt for imperialism is gone, his mood is more sober, his perceptions more open and though he still has doubts, they are more clear to him after his experiences in Africa have ended.
