Six hours into my pro football watching marathon last Sunday I realized two things; First, the Saints revamped defense might not be as good as advertised; and second, the Broncos can flat out score the football.
As I mulled this over in my brain while also considering the monumental decision of what I would have for dinner, I began to make a few connections. If the Saints are struggling on defense and the Broncos are scoring more often then Hugh Hefner, how in the world did New Orleans expect to win its Week Three trip to Denver?
Against San Diego, supposedly one of the best defenses in the league, the Broncos put up 39. Cutler moved the ball at will against defenders far more talented than anyone the Saints have. Brandon Marshall, hell bent on recovering fantasy value after his Week One suspension, caught 18 balls.
And Eddie where-the-heck-did-he-come-from Royal proved he isn’t a one hit wonder.
There was no denying it: This Broncos team can and will score on anybody. So again I returned to my question: Who on the Saints roster has a chance of stopping this Cutler-led scoring machine?
Based on Sunday’s performance against the Redskins, I’d say one guy--Jonathan Vilma. Of course, he can’t stop an offense all by himself, but I single him out because he was the only Saints defender who actually defended against Washington.
The rest of the defense was ineffective. I understand there were several starters injured, but no starters were out on the defensive line. Why couldn’t the Saints get any pass rush?
I digress, that game is over and done with. It’s time to focus on this week. By the way, how many combined points will the Saints and Broncos score? Can Vegas get away with an over/under set at 60? I might still take the over.
Clearly the only way New Orleans beats Denver this week is if they outscore them. Can it be done? Possibly. Can Lou Holtz make it through an entire sentence without sounding ridiculous? Possibly. Not likely, though.
The point is New Orleans must play an outstanding offensive game to win this Sunday. They’ve got to play a Dallas in ’06 type game to win. So far the Saints offense hasn’t run as smoothly as it’s capable of running. To get past Cutler and Co. it’s got to purr like a Corvette.
That means no more fumbles, drops or interceptions. It means establishing the running game early with Deuce McAllister. And it means tons of protection for Drew Brees.
If the Saints can check those three things off the list at the end of the day, odds are they’ll heading home happy.

I really am not a fan of these Bleacher report pseudo-"articles" especially ones that display this amount of Hubris early in the season. They're asking for a jinx. Look at the Raider one where they list "Ten reasons the Raiders beat the Broncos."

They changed the defensive scheme when Mangini took over to a 3-4. He never adjusted well and when he got hurt they chose to trade him.

Leading the league in tackles is NOT a good thing. It usually means entirely too many opportunities. He looked OK against TB and WAS though. The kid who looked solid was Dunbar, solid find who can read the game and play it. Your secondary better get healthy real fast though. Santana Moss ate you guys alive and Tracy Porter is not the answer yet. What is the status of your top 3 CB's? I know Glenn, Gay, and McKenzie were hurt last week. Any news out of NO?

Screw 32 and move up for Rey "Bad ass" Maualuga and call it a day. Pay the cost and do it. Then take one of the DE's later. Preferably, Greg Middleton from Indiana. He might drop for "character". We all know that does not mean to much to Mike!

You have to pay the price to get talent like that. Problem is, every once in awhile one of them flops or gets injured and then your are screwed.
Give Jarvis some time though, he can play. I just hope Jacob Burney does not screw him up even more than he has the rest of them.

Moss will get his chances. Saints OL was pretty off trying to protect their new center Goodwin last week. They let the Redskins get too many one on one's outside hoping Brees would get rid of the ball quickly.
Problem was that Colston has a broken hand from Ronde Barber and the rest of the WR's looked about as good as SEA's current group. They took Bush out of the passing game until the 2 minute drills and Shockey looked totally disinterested as he fumbled a third down conversion and quit on a slant that got deflected and INT'd.

He had a really bad case of the staph in his college days and (played with it )... and staph infections of the recent types are really nasty.

Rey is a rare kind.
A fairly athletic LB who doesn't get owned when he gets touched.
A lot of these athletic type of LBs tend to be undersized and weak and simply owned by the blockers when they get touched, but not Rey.
Rey is just simply too angry and strong to be contained.

Rey hits harder than Al Wilson did at Tennessee. His only problem is overpursuit, but that does not show up very much playing for USC as they just out talent everyone. Also, he plays a lot of zone, but he blitzes like a Mack truck

I don't think he's as athletic as Wilson. I'm not too sure if Rey could shadow Randy Moss or Marshall Faulk in their physical prime.
But he's a lot better between the tackle guy and blitzer than Al.

Game tape from Florida. Gaines Adams and Moss were the two best pure Pass rushers in that draft, hands down. Jarvis is a 2 years younger than Adams and missed a ton of time at Florida with the Staph infection before it was treated. He was just a machine as a pass rusher and better against the run than people realize. He is just way behind in his technique and development as opposed to Dumervil who was all technique coming out. Kid was and is a project. But he can play. They just need to give him reps on the field and learn the hard way.
Off topic, Two other CHI cuts I would like to see DEN bring in are Dan Bazuin DE Central Michigan and Josh Gattis S Wake Forrest.

Is there any other player you would compare him to that was of similar build with raw technique like Jarvis?
I am just wondering what sort of time frame should be suitable for a player of Jarvis's build and skill set.
I am having trouble seeing how he is as talented as people say. I would think in preseason he would occasionally beat people with his talent if his skill set matches that of an elite pass rusher. But I saw someone who looked slow and got pushed around like a rag doll against guys who wont even start in this league.
I am not sure is technique is going to change that much.
Also he played on a flat out sick defensive line in college. Surely it is much easier to look good in college when offenses dont have to focus on you.

and they are young... Imagine how good this group will be in a couple of years.
Only five starters are over 5 years in the league (Graham, Hamilton, Nalen/Wiegman) of the 11 starters (assuming Graham starts, it drops to two players with 5+ years of experience if Scheff starts.)
Of the regular contributors:
7+ year players:
Nalen/Wiegman*
Hamilton*
Graham*
Nate Jackson
Michael Pittman
Stokely
Darrly Jackson
4-6 years in leauge:
None that come to mind
3rd year player or younger:
Cutler*
Marshall*
Royal*
Scheffler
Hillis*
Young*
Hall
Clady*
Kuper*
Harris*
So, 8 starters in their rookie, 2nd or 3rd years in the NFL. 3 Veteran starters with 8+ years in the leauge.
This is a young offense, that has the potential to get better, and be good for a long time.
