View Full Version : Community Organizer - A story of success

Obama states that in college he couldn't even explain what a community organizer did, but you can follow his experience that he says qualifies him to bring change we need to America. This is a very well written piece by Byron York at the National Review and may help his supporters understand and be able to explain's Obama's success.
http://article.nationalreview.com/?q=OWMxNGUxZWJjYzg1NjA0MTlmZDZmMjUwZGU3ZjAwNmU=&w=MQ==#more
But on the other hand, Obama seemed to realize that it was very, very hard to get anything done. “He didn’t see organizing making any significant changes in things,” Jerry Kellman recalled.
The solution, Obama felt, was to find a way to political power of his own.
“He was constantly thinking about his path to significance and power,” Mike Kruglik told me. “He said, ‘I need to go there [Harvard Law School] to find out more about power. How do powerful people think? What kind of networks do they have? How do they connect to each other?’”
In a few months, Obama was gone. He had been an organizer for three years.

So Obama didn't know what something was in college and this is supposed
to disqualify him.
But Palin doesn't even know what the Bush doctrine is, and she wants
to be one heartbeat away from being the president and commander in chief?

Bob, please recite the Bush doctrine. You probably recognize that the story is pulled from Obama's first book, don't you? You probably also read the last paragraph in the story provided by the link? This is further evidence to independent minded voters why not to get in the line with parrots and those exhibiting the 15 second attention span.

I read both his books, and I recall the basic thrust of this .... but I think you're seeing something that's not there. He was frustrated at the progress being made in grass roots community activism, so he diligently sought out and pursued more powerful and effective means to bring about the kinds of change that would empower the middle and working classes. And he has been spectacularly successful doing so. So what's your beef?

Congratulatons on reading his books, then why the earlier agitated behavior? What success? He was successful at organizing, but not at completing anything of "spectacular" value. Since you are an Obama supporter, can you please list his top 3 accomplishments in your opinion. This will surely make me believe he is a better canidate for VP than Palin.

1. The Coburn-Obama Government Transparency Act of 2006
is an act that requires the full disclosure of all entities or organizations receiving federal funds beginning in fiscal year (FY) 2007 on a website maintained by the Office of Management and Budget.
2. The bi-partisan Lugar-Obama Nuclear non-proliferation and conventional weapons threat act. Authored by U.S. Sens. Dick Lugar (R-IN) and Barack Obama (D-IL), the Lugar-Obama initiative expands U.S. cooperation to destroy conventional weapons. It also expands the State Department's ability to detect and interdict weapons and materials of mass destruction.
3. The 2007 Government Ethics Bill, which many non-partisan groups hail as the "gold standard" of ethics reform.
He's done a lot more, but in those three you can see his true character. Promoting a transparent and honest government and also looking to protect America at every turn.

I'm not sure exactly why "community organizer" is being used as an epithet.
Obama pitched in to try to help out with his community before going off to Harvard Law...and he's being criticized for it? In what bizarro world is it bad to pitch in a hand to help out your community? Most people couldn't care less.
The common thinking seems to be:
"He helped 'organize his community' before going off to college - he's going to be a terrible president".

I think anyone with half a brain knows that Obama is not qualified to be president. The truth hurts, but there it is. The question is whether McCain is qualified to be president. I'm not sold on that but at least he's in the conversation. Everyone is so desperate to slag Palin or react violently against Bush's term that the issue of qualification has been blotted from their mind completely. The statement, 'Obama is qualified to be President of the United States' is not rational.

There in lies your typical liberal twist. Conveniently keeping out governor. And yes being a mayor and a governor is more qualified than a first term senator.
That is just fine however, you liberals in your panic of Palin and continued mud slinging at her is working better than anyone could have ever expected. By doing so it keeps her pretty face on all the news stations and magazines and it has squashed the only thing Barak Hussein Osama had going for him and that is leading the way in hype.

Meanie, the Bush doctrine does not exist except in the minds of anti-Bush rhetoric, but leftists expect Palin to be able to quote their dogma. You highlighted the point that pro Obama supporters slam Palin without substance and then can't back it up. Is there a US State Department or DoD website that explains the Bush Doctrine as a "real" policy? NOT SO MUCH.
I do applaud Sen Obama for community involvement, but the arguement has been that it puts him above Palin. The fact is they both became involved in the community and public service to improve the quality of life for others. One actually had responsibility and made drastic changes improving the lives of common Americans. One sought more power after feeling that being organized did not produce and results.

Part truth in your comment, validated mainly by the fact that Obama supporters don't understand his experience and quickly attack someone who started on the PTA, School Board, Mayor, and Govenor route rather than an organizer and lobbyist. Obama did public service organizing citizens to work withing their PTA, school boards, lobbying their elected officials, churches, and numerous other organizations during a 3 year period. He never supervised or led, and he never had enough "power" that comes with responsibility.
Those who don't know the issues don't have an arguement- maybe not even a direction.

Why do you keep making wildly off-base statements deflecting the truth? The article states Obama started going to church when he found out it added credibility when working with churches. Did you read his book? What does it say? If you keep perpetuating myth, how will truth be separated from lies? I'm sure you can provide better debate than linking Obama to terrorist fear- how about some truth?

This is just more of the same slimeball politics from the Right. It's all they know. Imagine what Obama could have done? Do you know the options available to a young, black man coming out of Harvard with a JD as the president of the Harvard Law Review? First, if he chose, he could have had one of the plum jobs in the country: Supreme Court clerkship. Second, he could have picked any DA job in the country and started his political career off with a bang. Third, he could have picked any of the most prestigious law firms in the U.S. and started at a couple of hundred grand a year. What does he decide to do? Go stick up for unemployed steel workers in Chicago while teaching Constitutional law to students.
But here's the good part. McCain was at Columbia yesterday talking about how great service is and how important it is to dedicate a part of your life to your community, and blah, blah, blah. Welcome to the Republican Party: Where slimeball politics and hypocrisy rule.

Why the "race" card? Skin color does not make a difference.
Thanks for pointing out that McCain has devoted his entire life to public service, his wife is a community organizer and certified teacher. McCain also recognzied Obama's public service by offering him a position of Public Service Secretary in the McCain cabinet.

Thanks, your appreciation does mean alot.
The point is that Obama attracted his first followers by having a good name. Inside the Chicago loop, his organization efforts- though uncessfull got him elected to 2 legislatures. Then he tried to take his grass roots organization into the mainstream, but without a record of mainstream success and following the corrupt politics of any party, he is not so palatable.
I disagree with McCain/Palin on numerous issues impinging on civil rights. Their strong point is that there is a record that their are not more of the same corrupt politics that it takes to succeed in the DC beltway. It is their good name. Few in Washington can match McCains non partisan record, but there are some. Examine the records of Sen Feingold (D-CA). Maybe Obama should have followed her example before smearing his own good name and cloaking himself in the corrupt fellowship of so many others.
In the beltway, if you are open-minded like Sen Lieberman (an Idependent), the corrupt will do everything to diminish your voice. How could a once Dem presidential canidate will outcast so far by really pushing for change?
Everything you have can be taken from you (house, money, freedom, etc); but you have to make the choice to surrender integrity.

So you consistently hang out with racists, demonstrate sexism consistently, have a fixation of pedophiles, spout like you have tourets, have bragged about almost engaging in physical violence, and you consistently slander and debase the non-left crowd. and you are a Raider fan hanging out on the Orangemane because they kicked you off of Raider Nation. It is extremely easy to provide documentation on all these statements, claims, and insults you have made; so it really looks like your life isn't too together.
Now I'll start with the assumptions. I assume you feel happy insulting others. You never will resort to violence, because you are in fact very cowardly. You lean left because the angry whacko posters are fueled by the nonsense you spew, and every gang of weak dogs run in packs. The young open minded adults find you quirky and eccentric, most of them being more polite and educated than you are and that makes you feel good.
I'm happy for you that on the internet you can be anybody you want, except any smarter than you are in real life. It provides an outlet where the hate you have for females, other ethnic groups and races, religions, and those more affluent do not have to suffer anything stupid that you may call recreation.
The unhappy news is that I don't play that way. By stating things that only are real in your head, it neither empties my pocket, breaks my arm, or hurts my credibility with people that matter. Your only success is that I am increasing becoming convinced that very little signifcant debate, discussion, knowledge or entertainment is found by spending time on bulletin board where such meaningless drivel prevails and a great amount of time is spent reading immature insults.
Normally I would not post such a cruel and direct debasing of another human being, it neither brings me joy nor boosts my ego; but eventually someone had to slap you into maturity. There are some free groups that meet in Cheyenne where they will gladly help you with almost all of your issues (except being a Raider fan) and if you can't find them, send me a note and I will gladly help you out. Wow! You spent some time working on developing a message where you could hide your racists leaning by posting it with my name on it. I could care less what a feab thinks about me. But I do have the courage to point out ignorant hating of someone because of the color of their skin. It is pretty apparent by your effort and disregard by any offensive non-white posters would take at your "humour", that you are indead a hater. You, Spider, and Buff Bronco should be able to share the same KKK bedsheets. I don't think even masking racial epithets in a joke is a funny thing. You obviously do not really support Obama, but you do enjoy trolling.
You continually degenerate people by their sex, race, and opinion without communicating any value. Does attacking others make you feel superior due to your shortcomings? You devalue the freedom of speach, but that doesn't mean better humans have to accept your behavior.

Apparently you are trying a personal attack on me and dragging the 1% of Americans that offer up all they have for your freedoms. If you really think you can see past party lines, take a look at the racist comments being posted by your fellow party members like LA Bronco, Buff Bronco, and Spider. They actually think it is funny to hide behind accusing others of saying racist comments, when they are the real originators and they obviously think it is funny. I don't suspect Obama would be amused and if he has the values you hope for, he definitely would not want supporters like them. In the millitary, there is zero tolerance for racist behavior. Thinking the racism (and sexism) is something to makes jokes out has caused me to kick losers out.
Your fellow posters are sick, racist, and cowardly. I don't believe these are people worth giving any more time to.

I've neither posted anything embarassing to me, unwarrantly belittling others, or making false claims. However, you are right about two things.
1. It is a hard transition to civilian, where standards of conduct are much lower.
2. Posting on this board does not make it true. I could be a 12 year old girl that has gotten the better of you. I could be a low-life, white trash that is so socially inept that his is my only release. I could be a 98 pound high school student needing attention. I could be a Phd doing doctorial research on how misfits on the internet socially interact during political discussions. Maybe I am a member of the McCain disinformation committee exposing the high intellect of Obama supporters. Maybe I am DOJ fishing on the internet so I can bust people violating the civil rights of others. Maybe I am a bored housewife. I could be a bhudist monk.
Or maybe I am a 20+ years, highly decorated combat veteran who has been where most were either too weak or lazy to go. Please take time to thank a soldier, sailor, airman, or marine for freedom.
The point is you never know, so why is it so hard for so many to act like decent people? Why is there so many quick to attack others without thinking? What if that is a kid you are cursing at or bullying? Maybe you need to find other hobbies.
I have been sufficiently amused and it will not change the herd behavior of angry and crazy people in any manner. To those 1% that have served honorably and those decent biengs posting on the website; blessings and thanks. To those other, get on this frequency: By stating things that only are real in your head, it neither empties my pocket, breaks my arm, or hurts my credibility with people that matter.
