Palin leaves open option of war with Russia 1 hour, 32 minutes ago
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080911/ap_on_el_pr/palin_interview
Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin left open the option Thursday of waging war with Russia if it were to invade neighboring Georgia and the former Soviet republic were a NATO ally. "We will not repeat a Cold War," Palin said in her first television interview since becoming Republican John McCain's vice presidential running mate two weeks ago.
Palin told Charles Gibson of ABC News that she'd favor including Georgia and Ukraine, both former Soviet republics, in NATO despite opposition by Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. Asked whether the United States would have to go to war with Russia if it invaded Georgia, and the country was part of NATO, Palin said: "Perhaps so."
"I mean, that is the agreement when you are a NATO ally, is if another country is attacked, you're going to be expected to be called upon and help," she said.
Pressed on the question, Palin responded: "What I think is that smaller democratic countries that are invaded by a larger power is something for us to be vigilant against ... We have got to show the support, in this case, for Georgia. The support that we can show is economic sanctions perhaps against Russia, if this is what it leads to."
She added: "It doesn't have to lead to war and it doesn't have to lead, as I said, to a Cold War, but economic sanctions, diplomatic pressure, again, counting on our allies to help us do that in this mission of keeping our eye on Russia and Putin and some of his desire to control and to control much more than smaller democratic countries."
Palin spoke the same day Putin insisted that Russia has no intention of encroaching on the sovereignty of Georgia, following a brief war that left Russian troops in firm control of two breakaway regions. Putin also aggressively defended the decision to send troops to Georgia, saying Russia had to act after Georgia attacked South Ossetia last month.
On other matters, Palin said she "didn't hesitate" when McCain asked her to be his running mate, a surprise selection that shook up the presidential race.
"I answered him 'yes' because I have the confidence in that readiness and knowing that you can't blink, you have to be wired in a way of being so committed to the mission, the mission that we're on, reform of this country and victory in the war, you can't blink. So I didn't blink then even when asked to run as his running mate," said the 44-year-old Palin, who has been in office less than two years.
Questioned about whether she felt ready to step in as vice president or perhaps even president if something happened to the 72-year-old McCain, Palin said: "I do, Charlie, and on January 20, when John McCain and I are sworn in, if we are so privileged to be elected to serve this country, we'll be ready. I'm ready."
Gibson also read Palin a comment she made in her former church — "Our national leaders are sending U.S. soldiers on a task that is from God" — and asked whether she thought the United States was fighting a holy war.
Palin said she was recalling Abraham Lincoln's words when she made the comment and said: "I would never presume to know God's will or to speak God's words."
She said she didn't know if her son Track who is headed to Iraq was on a mission from God.
"What I know is that my son has made a decision. I am so proud of his independent and strong decision he has made, what he decided to do and serving for the right reasons and serving something greater than himself and not choosing a real easy path where he could be more comfortable and certainly safer," Palin said.

Spider, I don't disagree that Russia current ambitions need to be checked. I agree with her that little emerging democracy need our help. Democracy don't really fight each.
But from a strategic stand point you don't make a comment of troops unless you are willing to us them. Right now, we are not able to effective commit troops to support Georgia with a major reposition of troops and logistic capabilities. When you move you move with force and power that ensure maximum violence to your opponent.

Palin considers war with Russia, and Mccane wants to send the peace corps:rofl: Dick Cheney part deux?
Sen. John McCain, speaking Thursday night at a Time-sponsored forum on national service, said sending members of the Peace Corps to "countries that don't like us" is the best way to raise our esteem in the world. "The best thing we can do is expose the people in these countries to things we value, the things we stand for, the things we believe in," he said.

HOLY CRAP
Charlie: Do you agree with the Bush Doctrine?
Palin: In what respect, Charlie?
Charlie: What do you interpret it to be?
Palin: His worldview.
Charlie: No, No, the Bush Doctrine. He enunciated it in September 2002, before the Iraq War.
Palin: I believe that what President Bush has attempted to do is to rid this world of Islamic extremism, terrorists who are hellbent on destroying our nation. There have been blunders along the way, though. There have been mistakes made. And with new leadership--and that's the beauty of American elections and democracy--with new leadership comes the opportunity to do things better.
Charlie: The Bush Doctrine, as I understand it, is that we have the right of anticipatory defense. We have the right to preemptively strike any other country that we believe is going to attack us.

Our national defense really isn't "compromised". It just of sort logistic problem. Right now all our land gear and equipment is deployed in wrong part of the world. We have to reposition that stuff and rebuild a new logistic tail to support conflict in that area of the world. We just have to haul stuff to different part of the world and that takes time.
I don't think people realize how deadly our military is compared to the rest of the world, even after conflicts for the last 7 plus years. Both the Navy and Air Force aren't really stretched as thin as folks think.

So this is frightening on so many levels. Hey the flashing blue and red lights gets my avatar of the year award btw, but holy s**t just watch her body language, she is drawing on only coaching and nothing else in terms of knowledge. Every response starts off with her right foot twitching, an indicator of nervousness about the question that has been presented to her and how to transition the response from not answering the question into a speaking point. Once she gets into her speaking points the foot stops and the coached hand gestures start, (right hand only), its that taught, and the right hand? it gets a'movin but in a pretend false forceful sort of way. The eye contact is beyond abnormal, it's zombie like. This isn't natural it's 2 weeks of intensive prep to carry a role. In other words none of it comes from the ease of experience and knowledge, she reminds me of a trout flopping on a riverbank trying to find water again or a bad figurine out of a wax museum. I'm not saying she's a bad person, just a pathetic choice for VP.

She is correct of course, NATO is NATO, and it's a defense alliance. That's the whole freaking point.

Dude, she did not know what the Bush Doctrine was. One of the most significant foreign policy dictums in American history (to our detriment), and she did not know what it was! Then she tells us about how you can see Russia from Alaska, so that means she has credibility in dealing with Putin! If you don't see how those responses expose her as frighteningly clueless on foreign policy (some members of this board would seem to know more), then you are hopelessly a lost cause.

Gibson missed the boat on this. He took words out of context in this exchange about 'God's will'. The guy relied on the AP for his 'quotes' and got bit in the butt by quoting her mid-sentence rather than using the entire sentence which begins, 'Let Us Pray'...
For those who prefer to know the actual facts, here's the actual quote:
“Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right. Also, for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending [U.S. soldiers] out on a task that is from God,” she exhorted the congregants. “That’s what we have to make sure that we’re praying for, that there is a plan and that that plan is God’s plan.”
Here's what the AP (and then Gibson) turned it into:
Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin told ministry students at her former church that the United States sent troops to fight in the Iraq war on a “task that is from God.”…
“Our national leaders are sending them out on a task that is from God,” she said. “That’s what we have to make sure that we’re praying for, that there is a plan and that plan is God’s plan.”
I don't know about you, but that's either a)irresponsible journalism or b) a blatant attempt to damage someone. Hey, Palin's got some major chinks in her armor, just like everyone, but fair is fair.

Why the hell would you burn it? if you bury it it is not going to hurt anything unless you happen to bury it where someone draws their water supply. If you burn it you spread the toxins in their atmosphere where they will do damage.
Some time I really wish that people would think about what they say, then ask someone who knows more than they do, and shut up when they realize they are about to humiliate themselves.

Made up might not be the best way to put it. It's a subjective term that can apply to a great number of things with an administrations foreign policy. I assume based on the reading I have done today is if Palin supports pre-emptive war. And you can make a number of srguments supporting each side provided you know the outcome.

I read that Obama has secured over a billion in earmarks for his state (not sure if that is only one year), and Palin's state was nowhere close to that.
Obama requested ~$98M in earmarks last year.
Alaska received $475M, of which Palin asked for nearly all of it.
Illinois has a much bigger population and so receives a lot more governmental aid, but it isn't at the request of Obama.
Hell, Palin hired lobbyists for Alaska and before that Wasilla, managing to pull down $27M in earmarks just for her little town of 5000-7000 residents. (all of which she sunk into frivolous things like sports centers when the infrastructure needed an overhaul).
John McCain has sited an earmark to study bear DNA has the kind of programs he takes issue with. Funny, Alaska received $15M for a seal DNA research program.
