Rivers prefers to punt regarding Broncos flap

Monday, September 8, 2008
Chargers QB Philip Rivers says he still plans on talking with Denver quarterback Jay Cutler before the team's meet on Sunday. Jim Baird/Union-Tribune

After taking all the criticism, all the while remaining mum on what Jay Cutler did that Christmas Eve that wasn't caught on camera, Philip Rivers doesn't see why he wouldn't talk with Cutler same as usual prior to Sunday's game in Denver.

“I've always spoke to him before every time we played,” Rivers said. “From my end, sure.”

Rivers, anyone who follows football remembers, was skewered last year by fans and media after being shown on television during the Chargers' Christmas Eve victory yelling in the direction of the Broncos.

It was after a fourth-down stop that Rivers came a few steps onto the field and was yelling, and Rivers maintained he was imparting encouragement to his teammates, though he acknowledged he did make eye contact with Cutler and there had been jawing back and forth. Thing is, Rivers and several teammates said, Cutler started the talking.

What Rivers won't address is a crude gesture several Chargers say Cutler made prior to Rivers' theatrics.

And Rivers said he won't have anything more to say about Cutler this week.

“I'm not going to get into it through ... the media all week long,” he said. “I'm just not gonna do it. I'm gonna talk football and Denver and what kind of team they are as I get to prepare for them and play the game. Whatever happened to me is gone. That was eight months ago. I'm gonna move forward.”

I personally think Rivers needs and orange and blue backhand. It's difficult to talk when your lip is swollen.

Ah yes, a mysterious crude gesture from the notoriously withdrawn and quiet Cutler. One that, madly enough, wasn't caught by a single cameraman.

At a Monday Night Football game no less.

I don't really have much of a problem with the whole Rivers MNF thing. Sure I felt his jawing was a bit immature, but **** it. I doubt Jay is losing any sleep over it and I know I won't.

Trying to say Jay started it is a bit pathetic though.

Shanahan actually started it, by drafting Cutler into the same division as Rivers. What a cruel, cruel thing to have done.

They brought this up last night on "Jay Cutler Live", and asked Jay about it-he got this look on his face and said "I can't repeat what he said to me" (Rivers). then they asked him how he felt about it and he said "it makes me want to get out there and play the Game" (or something close to that)-

He just has that air about him, and always seems to have the right answers.

I may be the biggest RIvers hater here, but I think he is actually taking the high road (if he does what he says). I take this as a "wait and see," because it's hard to stop being a hothead like Rivers has been.

Props to Rivers if he shuts his hole.

If he flipped out over a middle finger then thats kind of weak. All he needed to do is smile and point at the scoreboard. But he seems to have a very short fuse. It doesn't affect his game though so I guess its just his personality.

The only thing he said is that he doesn't feel the need to comment on it. He didn't say anything about Jay's "crude gesture" and never has.

Rivers, "Yes, I will not comment on that rude gesture, you know that painful hurtful universal gesture that Jay Cutler extended my way. I refuse to comment on that insulting thrusting movement with the right hand. I'm above that".

Yeah I was going to mention this. They showed the replay and Cutler looked up and said "Just seeing that makes me want to play right now."

I never saw it, but Eric Allen said he watched the coaches tape of the game and supposedly Cutler looked at the Charger bench and grabbed his crotch, sort of confirming what the Charger players say.

Anyway, it's old news and really after the first play or two anything that happened last season will be forgotten.

Hey, they could be. LT could be out. Gates could be out. McNeil and Hardwick will be out. Merriman is out. Any time you lose five Pro Bowl players off your roster, you're in trouble. They are definitely fragile right now, but if they cover that fragility with intensity, then the Chargers will be fine. I said last week that I didn't think SD would cover against Carolina. I'm pretty objective when it comes to making predictions. They were fragile last week and didn't step up their game to compensate.

San Diego is going to do one of two things this week. They are going to show up demoralized and get their asses kicked. Or they are going to come out fired up and give the Broncos a classic, humiliating beat down. Even with the injuries, they can destroy a team like Denver if they give 4 quarters of the effort they showed in the 4th against Carolina. It's tough to predict which one it will be with Norval the Uneven at the helm, but I'm leaning towards a W for the Chargers.

But no way Denver gets blown out, and to be perfectly honest I can't see us blowing them out either.

Neither defense will be good enough to turn this game into a rout. I'll be surprised if both teams don't get more than 20 points.

27-24 or some such score IMO, and it could go either way.

IIRC, chargers have been scrambling to do damage control since the next day of the game. I have read comments from mysterious inside sources that Cutler used the 'N' word on some of the charger defenders and then that he made a crude gesture etc. They all back off from it when asked point blank in the press conferences. Chargers players keep saying that it was the emotion of the game when asked directly - but there also hidden innuendos that Broncos somehow were responsible for this. I don't buy it on bit and can't see how - Culter has no problem with any other player on any other team where as Chargers are always complaining about other teams. Ten is a dirty team, Patroits cheat, Broncos cut block and therefore are unmanly on and on.

My take is that - and i saw the game again - SD dominated the game and were trying to showup denver. Cutler was taking repeated late hits was getting furstated with lack of success. Rivers and the other charger players wer smack talking thru out the game and when the game got of hand, they just rubbed it in. IMHO, it was very classless and left a sour taste in Denver fans mouth.

I thought I had read somewhere else that Jay like to talk a little smack? Sure, he probably gave Phyllis the bird...whoopie! You could see his helmet moving back and forth like he was talling Rivers...."Keep talking Phyllis...keep talking".

Personally, I don't mind guys talking smack...it's part of the game...but for the QB to do it coming off the sideline to the other QB...what a bag!

We're going to kick some dolt a$$ this weekend!
