A league source tells us that Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman is expected to miss the rest of the 2008 season with two torn ligaments in his knee.
We’re not yet reporting this as hard news. But given the identity of the source, we have no reason to doubt it at this point.
Merriman played in the Chargers’ season-opening loss to the Panthers.
Stay tuned for more.

See, Merriman's knee was the topic of conversation for 2 solid weeks. In one play, Brady's knee has taken over.

My guess is he feels his team has a good shot at the SB this year and he wanted to be part of it.

I think he wanted to see how effectively he could play. He actually tore is PCL on the covering a kickoff in his very first preseaon game back in 2005. He tore the LCL when the Titans center dove into his knees from behind in a cheap shot early last December. He played the last 4 games and 3 playoff games with both torn last season. So maybe he thought he could tough it out. He still had straight line speed in the game against the Panthers, but could not cut or change directions - something a linebacker is pretty useless not being able to do.

Haha, I never said that. :)
Tucker is a good prospect and he's shown some flashes but he's still a youngin' with a lot to learn.
Though not very effective yet, I do notice though that at least he has some other moves in his repertoire, spin moves and such.
I think Shaun Phillips is the best pure pass rusher on the team but even he is just a straight speed rusher. The thing that makes him great is that he gets great jumps off the snap.
Cottrell better wake up and start drawing up some creative blitzes because the straight up pass rush didn't work against Carolina.

Merriman Done For The SeasonSan Diego Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman's season is over after he tried to play the season opener Sunday with two torn knee ligaments.
The Chargers announced Merriman will be placed on injured reserve to undergo total reconstructive knee surgery that will include the repair of his lateral collateral and posterior cruciate ligaments.
"Shawne informed me he did not feel right [on the field] and thought it best to shut it down," Chargers general manager A.J. Smith said. "The road to winning the AFC West just got more difficult, but not impossible. Nothing is impossible. Shawne is a great player and an inspirational leader. He will be missed. We wish him a successful surgery and a speedy recovery."
The knee problem dates to the end of the 2007 season.

Merriman has tears in his left knee, which he hurt in a game at Tennessee in December. Merriman sought outside opinions, with four doctors telling him he needed surgery, but said there "just wasn't a time frame on that. My knee still looks pretty good. The decision was left up to me to play. If you give a football player a decision to play, you know, I'm going to play."
Before the season started, Merriman decided to play rather than have his damaged left knee repaired.
"To be as simple as possible, I just want to play football," Merriman said previously. "That's what it comes down to. I know what's on the table, I know what's on the line. I put a lot of work in this, and I want to play."
He likely will be looking at a rehab of six to seven months.
With his nonstop energy and spasmodic sack dance, the player known as "Lights Out" has been the face of the Chargers' defense the past three seasons. He has 39˝ sacks in that span, more than any other NFL player, and has played in three straight Pro Bowls.

I know you are not suppose to wish injury on anyone. But, I really really REALLY hate this guy. His lights out dance is the stupidest thing I have ever seen. HARGERS ANNOUNCE THAT MERRIMAN IS DONE FOR THE YEAR
Posted by Mike Florio on September 9, 2008, 7:23 p.m.
Capping a story that has moved quickly over the past hour or so, the San Diego Chargers have formally announced that linebacker Shawne Merriman will undergo surgery and miss the rest of the year.
“Shawne informed me he did not feel right and thought it best to shut it down,” Chargers G.M. A.J. Smith said. “The road to winning the AFC West just got more difficult, but not impossible. Nothing is impossible. Shawne is a great player and an inspirational leader. He will be missed. We wish him a successful surgery and a speedy recovery.”
Merriman has a torn PCL and LCL. Several doctors advised him to have surgery, but he opted to try to play.

Anyone who watched the game saw he wasn't effective. He could run a straight line nice but damn he couldn't do anything else.
Also you can edit your own title. Just click edit on your first post and go to advanced. In the subject you will find your title and you can change the spelling.
Yeah, he did almost nothing. He did set a record for the biggest knee brace I have ever seen.

I heard that Merriman saw a picture of the man he'll be lining up against this week, and said screw it, I'm done.

Maybe he caught a whiff of the Monday Night game and came down with a case of the FEAR CUTLERS.

I love that everyone who started them are regulars. They're all smart enough to know what they're doing.
Except Hotrod. He's not so smart. His was real.

I guess he decided for surgery. Good for him. Better that than crutches at 40
HARGERS ANNOUNCE THAT MERRIMAN IS DONE FOR THE YEAR
Posted by Mike Florio on September 9, 2008, 7:23 p.m.
I don't think he cares too much about 40. Hence, the steroid use.
