View Full Version : Vince Young is mentally breaking down.

Metro Police issued a bulletin for officers to be on the lookout for Titans quarterback Vince Young on Monday night after Coach Jeff Fisher expressed concern about his emotional well being.

According to Metro Police spokesman Don Aaron, Fisher had been alerted after a friend of Young’s contacted the coach around 7 p.m. Monday night. Young eventually made contact with Fisher, and the two met around midnight with Metro police officials at Baptist Sports Park.

“Given the totality of the situation, Coach Fisher was concerned about Young’s emotional well-being. He contacted the police department and expressed to us his concern,’’ Aaron said.

“Once he came to Baptist Sports Park and was assessed, it appeared the concerns from earlier in the night were unfounded.’’

According to police, Young left his home abruptly Monday night and sped off without his cell phone. A person at Young’s home contacted Fisher, who then contacted police.

After Young eventually made contact with Fisher several hours later, he was told he needed to meet with police.

Young had a handgun in the glove compartment of his vehicle, but it was not loaded and Aaron said officers had no concerns about Young trying to harm himself.

“The fact the gun was in the glove compartment and was unloaded did not present an issue for the officers,’’ Aaron said. “There was no ammunition in the car. The gun was unloaded. The slide was back in a safe position, and it was in the glove box.’’

Fisher could not immediately be reached for comment. On Tuesday, the team issued a statement:

“Last night, we received a call from people that are closest to Vince informing us that he had left his house in a state of mind that had them concerned; and that he was unreachable, having left his cell phone at the house. Not having all the facts available to us and approaching the matter prudently, we contacted Metro Police to make them aware of the situation and asked for their assistance in locating Vince. He was located at a friend’s house, where we made contact with him. He then came to the practice facility where it was determined that those initial concerns by his friends and family were unfounded and he returned home without incident.”

Young suffered a left knee injury in the team’s 17-10 win over the Jaguars on Sunday. He was scheduled to undergo an MRI on the knee on Monday, but the MRI had to be rescheduled.

Young has proven to be an emotional player since being drafted by the Titans in the 2006 NFL Draft. Police took Monday’s episode seriously, Aaron said. After meeting with Fisher and police, Young was given permission to go home on his own.

“In a major city police department we have calls like this all the time about people who fear for their loved ones and want the police department to find them and check on their welfare, the difference here being Vince Young’s notoriety,’’ Aaron said.

“When the police department gets such calls you have to take them seriously. Every person is different and you never know how these issues will ultimately turn out. The concerns of last night appear to be unfounded.’’

He needs to start evaluating his game and break down as much film as possible and start putting in the work needed to reach Cutler's current level.

I don't know. He took himself out of the game Sunday, and Jeff Fisher had to all but physically carry him back out on the field. There seems to be at least a small fire behind this smoke.

VY needs to take a big step back and not only re-evaluate his career as an NFL QB, but re-evaluate his life. This story is very disturbing. Good thing Fisher is a tenured coach and is capable of providing solid guidance. This situation could go really poorly if VY played for a young coach.

Hope he gets his head on straight.

Think about this, though: While Fisher is off chasing his AWOL QB with the Nashville PD, Cutler is playing out of his mind and dissecting the Oakland D on national TV. Fisher must hate the Titans' FO right now...

it is obvious that Young is never going to reach Cutler's status. more and more i am thinking he isn't going to be in the NFL 3 years from now. Fisher has to be pissed, he wanted Jay.
Young has great athletic skills, but is a bad QB(he was way too overhyped following a great bowl game performance) and he has way too many mental problems to ever become elite.

It's sad to hear this kind of stuff. I never thought his game tranlated well to the NFL, but I think that a young franchise type QB is the responsibility of the Organization and the Head Coach.

Look around the NFL...Smith in San Fran, Leinart in AZ, Russell in Oakland etc. etc. Then contrast those experiences with those of the Rogers and Cutlers of the league.

How you bring a guy around and the talent you surround him with makes a world of difference. IMO.

Take Rogers and Smith. Had San Fran drafted Rogers instead of Smith...as several people have questioned, would Rogers be the QB he looks like today? If Smith would have went to Green Bay and learned behind Favre, would he be every bit as good as Rogers is now? I tend to think so.

Leinart's maturation process is more to do with off the field issues and whether he's 100% committed. You have to challenge him and develop him not only on the field but in the locker room as a leader. Guys like Smith, Young, Russell....these guys need to learn how to be NFL passers. You do that strategically and slowly. You don't take a guy like Smith, hand over the offense to him, and then wonder why he can't handle it. You have to build on it each week...stepping it up...giving him a little more each week.

I hate seeing guys like this fail...but it goes deeper then their own abilities...IMO.

Here's another point. What was the evaluation of Steve Young in Tampa Bay?

Then, when he went to a team with a guy who new how to use his talents (Bill Walsh) and how to develop him....well we all know how that turned out.

Interesting tid-bit: Do you think that Dinger is being rough on VY?? :-)

Vince was and still is very, very raw. he needed time to sit and learn. But the Titans wanted to dump McNair so fast and through the kid in there after two games.

He needed to be built up and learn to play quarterback.

To me it seems like he just wanted to get away from everyone for a while and just left his families house without saying anything to go hang out with someone he felt he could talk to.

He needed to be built up and learn to play quarterback.Excellent point. I agree. I think that Organization totally screwed up with the McNair situation...especially how it went down. If Young would have had 2-3 years behind McNair...watching him play, watching him lead...then I think he'd be in a totally different spot right now.

Instead, they tried to turn him into an instant star...geared at filling seats and selling merchandise no doubt!

It's interesting to look at the Fisher-Shanahan dynamic.

They are the two longest tenured coaches in the league, and they are reportedly very good friends.

Both are GREAT game day coaches and make the absolute most out of the talent on their teams.

But only Shanahan has autonomy when it comes to forming his team, which, as we know, comes with the good and sometimes the bad.

No one can accurately speculate what Fisher's team would look like if he had total control. But you can damn sure be certain that if all things were equal, Cutler, the hometown boy, would be on his team.

So contemplate this: The Titans beat a damn good Jaguars team with an anemic QB. Sure, they have done nothing to get quality WRs for Young, but would they not be one of the favorites to win the Super Bowl right now if Cutler was their man?

I don't think we always appreciate exactly how close to the edge every NFL player plays. These guys have to play every play like we played the moment in our life that we ran that fastest, tackle every time like the most vicious hit we ever delivered in football, and not leave any posibility in their head that they might fail - because just thinking that makes it more likely.

Now bear in mind that Vince Young is a quarter back vastly more phyiscally talented then his opponents and succeeded on the strength of his ability alone. But now that he in the NFL, and things that look like your fault just as often are a WR running the wrong route, or a RB failing to pick up a block. Now people are paying him tens of millions of dollars just for the posibility that he will be a great player. more to the point, if he fails at this, it's not just his NFL career on the line - it's everything. Be a success, a Marino, A Elay and a Montana you get commercial success for life. Crash, and no one will remember you outside of snarky articles on SI, and articles in the Alumni magazine about how you were great - even if you crashed when you got to the NFL.

Any people are surprised that players like Young, Leinart and Cutler are on the brink? This is something that occured to me when I was reading Fatsis book. Fatsis criticized Cutler for being aloof, but also because his natural narrative for the book was to build up Plummer as a kindred spirit to Fatsis - the main character in the book, and also to present Van Pelt (tragic character) and Preston Parsons (headcase, but good guy) in the light he wanted too.

So think about that for a second - a writer characterizes Cutler, to portray characters the way that is sympathetic for his purposes as a author.

Now realize that Cutler has had it relativly easier. No one paid attention to him. He got grabbed by a team that has a history of phenominal QBs, with a coach that has first hand experience with three of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history. Not only that, despite the fact that the first season ended less the optimally the coach was so in your corner, no one questioned the decision that you were the starter the next year - and the Broncos took a salary hit just to make sure there was no controversy. The local press was evil, but for the most part, very little scrutiny on the national stage.

Now image that you are Vince Young and Matt Leinart. Not only are you failing to accomplish what you were hired for, but the coaches are not always supportive, the national media vindictive and your career - and rest of your life - characterized by the most nasty of moderrn entities - the media.

So let's let the Young versus Cutler versus Leinart question sit. It will be ten years (barring something unforseen) before that question will be answered, and instead give our sympathy and prayers for a young man who seems to be under the gun.

I like this post, but I think you may be trivializing what it truly is to be a starting QB for any NFL team. You're under a microscope no matter where you were drafted or where you play. You are, in many cities, the biggest celebrity in your town. If you have a bad moment or two in public you have media and message board hacks screaming to the world about your bad reputation. Oh yeah, and if you don't play well and your team loses, look out.

Obviously, you're thinking more logically than the posts below you that assume that money makes up for everything, but once a player signs a lucrative contract they absolutely must know it opens them up to pressure from many angles.

To say Jay Cutler has had a free pass is folly. No, he doesn't have to deal with the John Elway Shadow that no doubt affected his predecessors. But Cutler still has to deal with a fairly rabid fan base, owner and coach that accept nothing but success.

If Cutler were putting up stats that compared to Vince Young's he would be getting crucified.

That being said, Vince Young possibly being mentally ill is a sad thing. I hope it works out.

What's bothering him is realization of his inadequacies, thought of due to lack of experience, but in truth, because of mental/emotional inadequacy. Playing QB in the NFL isn't easy.

He's regressed, and he's given up. He QUIT on Fischer.Case in point, one time it's a knee, another it's a hammy. Both are likely faked injuries..

Baloney. Fact is, both MV and VY were annointed before they did crap. Cutler had it easier at Vandy than VY at TEXAS? Following Elway (yes, 2 steps away) was still HUGE shoes to fill, and franky, he's 90-% there, now.

Maybe if VY spent more lime looking at film rather than ho's he might of improved.

Under the gun? That was HIS gun.

And I don't remember Fatis buddying up to McNair either.

Oh. I didn't mean that Cutler isn't under any pressure. The reality is that the modern NFL is equal parts skill and celebrity. That combination means big bucks, but also means insane pressure. The NFL is the ultimate combination of "what have you done for me lately", and "how can I sell more t-shirts?."

To say Jay Cutler has had a free pass is folly. No, he doesn't have to deal with the John Elway Shadow that no doubt affected his predecessors. But Cutler still has to deal with a fairly rabid fan base, owner and coach that accept nothing but success.

Sure they do, otherwise they would have ditched Cutler after the 2006 season.

If Cutler were putting up stats that compared to Vince Young's he would be getting crucified.

Yes. But that doesn't change the fact that V.Y and Leinart have had more of the press, more of the scrutiny, and more of the criticism.

That being said, Vince Young possibly being mentally ill is a sad thing. I hope it works out.

We too easily forget that human beings play this game.

7/27/2006: Signed a six-year, $58 million contract.
The deal contains $25.74 million in guarantees, including a $2.64 million signing bonus and a $12.3 million option bonus in the second year.

2008: $1.5 million,
2009: $2.16 million,

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Titans quarterback Vince Young insists he never wavered in his commitment to football.

All that concern over his mental state? He says he was upset as he dealt with his first serious injury, and he didn't realize he had to tell his mother where he was going anymore.

Then the media went overboard.

Young spoke publicly Thursday for the first time since Titans coach Jeff Fisher called police for help in locating the quarterback Monday night because of concerns over his emotional well-being. His mother, Felicia Young, also told a local newspaper that the quarterback had indicated he didn't want to play football anymore because of all the negativity he faced.

"I was never depressed," Young said.

He took questions from reporters for 16 minutes after watching his teammates practice. His message? Don't question his commitment.

"Football, this is my life. This is my dream. All I did all these years growing up to get to this point and never had an injury like this before in my life," he said.

"It's a hard time because I'm a competitor, and I definitely want to be out on the football field with my teammates."

Questions about his mental state and attitude started Sunday when Young was booed heavily by fans upset at his second interception, and he appeared as if he didn't want to return to the game. Fisher pulled his headset off and talked to him before the quarterback joined the rest of the offence.

Four plays later, Young sprained his left medial collateral ligament when Jaguars linebacker Daryl Smith crashed into his left knee.

Young didn't go to the Titans' headquarters Monday, and Fisher went to his quarterback's house. The Titans also sent a psychologist and another team official to talk with Young. He was described as being emotionally down. Young said Thursday that lasted half a day and he was upset over his two interceptions.

Fisher told Young to go take the MRI exam needed to determine the extent of the damage to his knee. Young didn't go. But with so many people at his house, Young said, he needed space to think.

"Let the cloud go away for a minute, and that's what I did. I left. My mom seen me; she thought I wasn't in my right mind. At the same time, I was watching the game, watching Aaron Rodgers do his things ... eating some hot wings," Young said.

The quarterback said he didn't realize he had to tell his mother where he was going.

"Even though you're paying your own bills at your own house, you still got to tell your mama where you are going now. So I understand where my mama's coming from. She wanted to know where I'm going because I didn't take my cell phone because so many people were calling me and making sure I'm all right," he said.

Those comments from his mother about his not wanting to play? Young blamed the media.

"She knows I don't want to leave football. She knows I love this game. She's the one that put me in this game. I'm here. I'm ready to play, but right now I'm rehabbing," he said.

Young didn't talk about the police waiting for him at the Titans' headquarters when he arrived to talk with Fisher nor what they discussed. He thanked the franchise for being behind him.

As far as his injured knee, Young said only that it is sore and he is working hard to heal up. He won't rush back too soon for fear of aggravating the injury.

The Titans have listed him as out for Sunday's game at Cincinnati.

A police report filed after the Monday night search for Tennessee Titans quarterback Vince Young states Titans Coach Jeff Fisher told police the star player’s therapist said Young “mentioned suicide several times.”

A Sept. 9 Metro Police “matter of record” supplement report obtained by The City Paper through a request under the state Public Records Law shows the Monday incident where Young went missing for about four hours began at LP Field.

The report from Central Precinct Lt. Andrea Swisher states Titans' head of security Steve Burke notified police that he had “a player over at the stadium going off.”

“Sgt. Windus later advised me that it was Vince Young and that he was driving a black Mercedes and armed with a gun,” Swisher’s report states.

Swisher states she went to the stadium where officers had already made contact with Fisher. Fisher told Swisher he had gotten a call from Young’s therapist, Sheila Peters, and “she was worried about him.”

“I asked him (Fisher), ‘What made her worry about him?’ He stated, ‘His mood, his emotions, he is injured, he wants to quit, and he mentioned suicide several times.’ He (Fisher) went on to state that he (Young) left the house with a gun,” Swisher’s report states.

In an interview last year, Young told the NFL.com he had considered retiring from football at one point after his rookie season.

The report goes on to state that Mike Mu, Young’s manager, later appeared at the stadium, telling police he had lost Young on Interstate 65 North from Williamson County with Young driving at a high rate of speed.

The police report further states Young’s therapist arranged for an on-site evaluation by employees of Parthenon Pavilion, a Nashville psychiatric hospital.

Fisher eventually heard from a person named “Major” in Houston that Young was safe and at an apartment with a female friend. Young’s agent’s name is Major Adams and is based in Houston. Adams flew in to Nashville to be with Young Tuesday morning.

The report states Young eventually arrived at a Titans facility to meet with Fisher, spoke with a therapist and eventually left. Previous public statements in the matter from police and the team put that meeting at Baptist Sports Complex. Police have said an unloaded gun was found in Young’s car but that no ammunition was in the vehicle.

Metro Police have received criticism for mobilizing such highly trained officers to locate the football star. Aaron said given the information the police had received from the team, the response was warranted.

“Based on the information provided, it was unknown if Vince Young was suicidal,” Metro Police spokesperson Don Aaron said Friday. “At 7 p.m. it was unclear if he was suicidal. …That was the bottom line for the police department’s response in the manner in which it occurred.”

Young struggled in the Titans’ 17-10 win over Jacksonville Sunday and was booed after throwing his second interception of the game in the fourth quarter.

After the Tennessee defense forced a punt, the offense took the field during a TV timeout without Young. Fisher became animated yelling toward his quarterback and gesturing apparently to get him to take the field.

Both Young and Fisher said it occurred as a result of a hamstring problem. Young eventually went back onto the field and sprained his left knee four plays later, leaving the game for good.

Titans officials declined to comment for this story.

IS YOUNG DONE?
Posted by Mike Florio on September 13, 2008, 6:31 p.m. EDT
The recent post from MDS regarding Peter King’s report that Titans quarterback Vince Young has lost the locker room (by the way, Eddie George says the same thing on FSN’s PFP . . . check your local listing for the next showing) convinces us that, barring a dramatic turn of events, Young will never play football again for the Tennessee Titans, and possibly never play again for any team.

We firmly believe that Young would retire right now (and very well might have quit the game after his rookie year) if he didn’t have to pay back a big chunk of the bonus money he received when he signed his contract with the team in 2006. And we’re now thinking that the Titans’ best move is to enter an agreement with Young pursuant to which he can retire without repayment obligation, and that he’d have to pay the money back only if he ever signs a contract with another NFL team.

Of course, if Young retires, the Titans could keep him from ever playing for another team by refusing to release him from the reserve/retired list.

With the locker room lost, and with Young certain to face constant verbal harassment from opposing players on the field, this situation will not improve absent some heroic action on Young’s part (perhaps by throwing a pigskin a quarter-mile) to change his teammates’ minds.

Even if he can win back his teammates, he’ll still have to constantly face defenders who believe that, if they frazzle him sufficiently, he’ll fall to pieces.

On a separate note, there was a report/rumor on Eagles-focused site GCobb.com that Young had gone missing again on Friday night, and that police were again looking for him. We haven’t been able to confirm or conclusively debunk this rumor, and while Garry Cobb has done a good job in the past of nailing Eagles’ scoop, Cobb’s suggestion that one of his friends who has friends on the Titans “told me that head coach Jeff Fisher and the police were looking for Young again and there was a fear that he was going to do something bad to himself” is the kind of thing that could prompt no one to ever listen to anything he has to say about any team other than the Eagles, if the report/rumor is incorrect.

Then again, it’s possible that Cobb is right on the money, and that the Titans have managed to completely cover this one up, just as they managed to hide some of the details of Monday night’s incident.

And we don’t blame them for trying to cover this stuff up. In a case like this, disclosure of the truth would only make it harder to Vince Young to continue his career.

Then again, given what we and everyone already know, we think it’s too late for that to happen, and that things are likely to only get worse if/when Young tries to play again.

Here is the rumor that PFT was referencing above...

All Points Bulletin For Vince Young
Written by Garry Cobb
Saturday, 13 September 2008
I learned last night around 8pm that there was another All Points Bulletin for Vince Young.
One of the my buddies with friends on the Titans told me that head coach Jeff Fisher and the police were looking for Young again and there was a fear that he was going to do something bad to himself.

His therapist said he left his home with a gun and was talking about suicide. His girlfriend and mother didn't have any idea where he was at, so the police were called to locate him.

This is the second time in a week and half, that Young has come up missing. It's becoming a pattern.

Of course I saw Young on television earlier this week talking about how he was fine.

It's amazing that this young man is crumbling like this after a little bit of booing

He was a young guy that surrounded himself in a very masculine environment that isn't exactly accepting of that lifestyle, so he became an alcoholic, hated himself for it, and almost committed suicide nightly. I hope he finds some happiness and is ok. The worst things to deal with sometimes are in your own mind.

I think it is amazing that the top three QB in the 2006 draft ALL had serious medical issues.

The ones putting out bad ju ju on Vince need to be careful about what they say. Sometimes what you give ends up being what you get.

I hope Vince gets some medication so that we can see his best football.

In the Plummer thread people were taking ripe craps on the guy for not wanting to sell his soul to play this game. I don't blame the Broncos for dumping Plummer or Plummer for walking away from the game.

NFL is a jealous, mean spirited and angry lover. Shanny's dog house is definitely a room without a windows. Once you get in there your career tends to spiral downward, disappear or worst gets passed on to other fans.

I worked with a guy in the Marine Corps that became a HUGE alcoholic. Never thought much of it because deployments are hard on a lot of people and he always got his job done anyways.

Well, after we all got out, I was talking to him on the computer and it turns out he's flaming gay. The alcoholism was just scratching the surface.

He was a young guy that surrounded himself in a very masculine environment that isn't exactly accepting of that lifestyle, so he became an alcoholic, hated himself for it, and almost committed suicide nightly. He's out an in Kentucky now (haha, abbreviation is KY!) and getting lots of dick, so he's happy.

Very similar situation with Vince. It wouldn't surprise me at all.

And I guess you are saying that homosexuals shouldn't put themselves in competing situations because of their lack of masculinity which turns them into alcoholics?

Because that was a direct quote from the last time I talked to him...

...and no... I'm saying that for young guys, especially surrounded by an extremely unforgiving and unaccepting environment, can have trouble accepting it themselves, especially when they're technically not allowed to, and in turn not even like themselves, and lead into (certainly did in this case) alcoholism, depression and thoughts of suicide.

The coaches tend to pump these guys full of happy talk and act like that will get them through. It's kind of sad really how disjointed the NFL has become.

It's just the economics of the sport now. In baseball a player can be drafted round one, go to the minor and grow into a player.

NBA,NFL, even the NHL 1st round players are expected to to play sooner. But the NFL is the worst with quarterbacks.

When the Oilers/Titans drafted Mcnair in 1995 they sat him for most of the year. He got to learn and watch behind Chandler.

Vince got thrown into a fire storm. McNair cut, traded Volek and start Collins a handful of games and thrusted Vince in there.

Then last year was the hype machine of the madden cover and all the expectations.

Too much, too fast.

Well Espn is reporting that Fisher is seriously thinking of sitting Young even when healthy to learn what takes to be starting QB behind Collins. I would say that is problem.

I with ya man

This is not meant to be an inflamatory comment to VY or the social group, but I'm starting to put my money down on the odds that in a decade or so we'll find out Vince is a homosexual.

Or something "else" that isn't "kosher" by the NFL players deem acceptable. There's other pressure IMO besides just the NFL stuff.

OR

He has a real issue with a mental illness. Sometimes stress can trigger "odd" behaviour.

I live in Nashville, and the local sports radio program, which has Frank Wycheck, former Titan, on in the morning, said that they had it on good authority that Young's knee injury was "minimal." They also said that there was a very good chance, barring injury, that Vince Young would NOT be taking another snap this year. They state that the team is very upset with the way that he has handled himself.

So unless Kerry Collins gets hurt, VY may not play at all the rest of the year.

Collins fits 'dingers O a lot better anyway.
