View Full Version : Eddie Royal=Ed McCaffrey?!?!

It sounds funny, but watching Royal run patterns reminded me of McCaffrey. McCaffrey ran some of the sickest patterns I've ever seen. A lot of double and triple moves. A lot of misdirections. He was able to get the DB turned one way and then cut against the DB's momentum. Royal was doing a lot of that same stuff. He had the Raider CBs turning in all kind of directions, and then when he finally made his last break he was wide open.
He ran a five yard in pattern. Most receivers will run that pattern to the inside of the DB, and then try to come out of the break really quick to beat the CB. Royal ran that pattern to the DBs outside, which made the DB turn his hips to the outside, and then Royal undercut him to the inside. The DB couldn't recover. Royal catches it, turns up field and gets another 4-5 yards after the catch.
On one pattern he ran a comeback to the outside. He starts his pattern to the flats, then runs up the field, then cuts to the post, and then does the comeback to the outside. The DB didn't know where the hell Royal was going.
That out and up and out was sick too.
I was really impressed by his route running. I've been teaching my 12-year-old son those same concepts. Get the DBs hips turned one way, and then cut against his momentum. It was cool that he saw that it actually works.
A couple of my favorite McCaffrey patterns. Of course the out and up on Shawn Springs. Springs had like 4.2 speed, but Ed beat him to the endzone by a good 10 yards. And against the Giants, before he broke his leg. He ran a post pattern. Instead of cutting to the post, he runs a 10 yard out, and when the CB bit Ed cut to the post for a TD.

No offense to Ed, but this was Royal's first game. I think he'll surpass him if Eddie consistently plays to his ability.

While I like both Eddies, Royal is much better. There will neve be another "Easy Eddie," but comparing McCaffrey to Royal is like comparing Largent to Rice. GO BRONCOS!!!

He runs his patterns similar to the way McCaffrey did. Not saying that he's on the level of McCaffrey. Just one game. Royal has a long way to go. But the double moves and misdirections is just like McCaffrey did.

He runs great routes indeed. If he stays the course of eating his humble pie as he has all off season we have another great WR for the next decade.

No offense to anyone , But Royal is all in a class by himself ,Speed off the line is amazing , route running for a rook is ... well Vets Such as Eddie Quiiterson still cant run routes like royal can .......... I would rather have Royal then Moss , T.O. Harrison , and Even Dare Say Marshal ........

Eddy Mac was more of a long strider that would out-physical his opponents with his height and strength. Royal is 5'11" and 180 lbs and mostly quick and fast. I think he's closer to Steve Smith than Eddie Mac.

Royal better than B-Marsh? I don't think so. B-Marsh commands attention from double teams, is a break away threat with the ball in his hands, a nasty blocker, and a freak of nature. Royal game on Monday is going to give SD defensive coaches long sleepless nights this week. Do you trust Jammer on Royal, or Cromartie? I don't think so, not one-on-one. But you can not double him, and single B-Marsh, and if you try to roll a safety Scheff is running free down the middle with a LB chasing.

Royal better then B Marsh ? .....Yeah I think so ,1 play 3 rd and short , Royal ran the perfect route , i remember 1 year we was in the Red Zone , Quitterson ran that route to shallow ,only other receiver we had I have seen I seen run that perfectly was ed mac vs pats , but Ed dropped the Ball ...... B marsh will over power defenders , off the line Royal has speed , speed ,Speed kills you have to respect his speed ....But I am just happy to have them both .....

We can break it down and compare Royal to a number of WRs, but from a route running point of view, those were McCaffrey type patterns. I can see the Steve Smith comparisons, because they are both quick and small. I haven't really payed attention to the type of routes Smith runs though. When he gets back from suspension I'll pay more attention lol.

Eddie Mac was lanky and Royal is more quick and shifty. Royal reminds me more of Steve Smith or for Broncos good ole Mark Jackson.

Royal had one badass game last night but why start a stupid thread like trying to compare him to Mac?

So Eddie Royal is a mix between Steve Smith, Marvin Harrison, Rod Smith, and Eddie Mac...and all after playing in just one real game! I wonder who he will be compared to if he drops an important ball or runs a bad route that leads to an INT.
Hopefully everyone will be just as supportive.
He was a treat to watch and I look forward to the rest of the year, but it was just one game guys.

Ima give Jason a little love here because he was talking about one thing...route running...not an NFL career, not blocking, not a competition to see who can get knocked out a game the most times and still be playing when the final whistle blows...just route running
and in that regard I do hear you...he runs smart routes that move the db well in advance of the actual final cut for the ball...I will say this though...Easy Ed had some serious limb action goinn on when he ran routes...his neck, wrists and elbows were all over the damn place as he tried to get the db going one way and his lanky ass going another (on that note...what is the story with Scheffler after he catches the ball...he looks like he's trying to run through a field of corn)...Eddie Royal accelerates much faster than Easy Ed, and his transistions are very smooth...he gets the db falling down without going through the same machinations that Ed would...of course he probably can't make the kidney sacrifice catch in the middle of the field quite the way Ed could though...lol
it was ridiculous how natural Royal made it look last night...

Speaking of that, Darrell Jackson is a solid run blocker. On the 72 yarder to Scheff, Jackson sized up #24 and "placed" him in the path of the other pursuers. By "placing" him, I mean smacking his butt to the turf.

Pretty much what I was getting at. The patterns are very similar. Seems like some posters are seeing the major difference, such as the height and speed, and thinking that there is no way that they can be similar. I haven't been this impressed with a guy's routes since McCaffrey.

Before we get out of and here , Ed Mac was an excellent route runner , as well as a great actor , but Royal gets to the spot alot faster ...... I would imagine the sooner Cutler gets rid of the ball the better for him and the oline

"Speed" is one tool for the toolkit, but an important one. Agility is maybe more important. Put it all in a package and you use your brain to maximize all of your physical talents to get the most out of route running.

How about how he kept his route going on the little 5 yard dig route and then slid to the inside opening in the zone coverage. His field awareness last night was amazing and for him to already understand how to beat the zone and what not... what a find!
Somebody asked me last night, "what happens when Brandon Marshall comes back?" My answer, "who ya gonna double team now?" NICE PROBLEM TO HAVE! That is exactly why DJack had one on one coverage. I'm willing to bet that Eddie Royal is going to have a few BIG games this year with Brandon taking most of the coverage. As good as Eddie played last night, Brandon is still a MUCH MUCH better player. Scary isn't it!
