“All Ready”- Darrent Williams

"It's really good -- it doesn't allow us the opportunity to slack or overlook anybody, It is an intense right off the bat, and that is what we want." – Nate Jackson

"Last year we were like a revolving door of defensive linemen, and you never could get comfortable with it. Now, we've got a group of guys who have been here, who have learned together and been pretty consistent."–DC Slowik

"If this team is going to go to the next level, it's going to be because of Jay,"–Dre Bly

"You've got a lot of pressure on you, you're pulling the triggers. You're making things happen, and that's why they pay you a lot of money,There's a lot of pressure, but obviously I enjoy it and obviously things are going well right now." -Jay Cutler

We need to be able to do 2 things. Run the ball & stop the run.

- If we can run the ball well, then cutler will be able to play his game without alot of pressure. If we can't run the ball effectively, then Jay's going to get alot of heat.

- The Raiders averaged 180 yds a game rushing on us last year...we have to hold them to 100 or less tonight. If we can limit their run game, we will force Russell to throw. He's hugely talented and will make some plays in the passing game...but he's also likely to throw us a couple as well.

KRIEGER: Raiders' Davis clings to his fiefdom

By Dave Krieger

Sunday, September 7, 2008

It's hard to pity a dictator, even when he grows old and decrepit. Holding onto power is all he seems to care about. But even among a select group of present-day megalomaniacs, Al Davis is in a class by himself.

George Steinbrenner gave up power before Davis did. Heck, Fidel Castro gave up power before Davis did.

In fact, at 79, Davis still hasn't, which helps to explain the downward spiral of his once proud football franchise to the worst record in the NFL over the last five years (19-61).

For all his bluster and bravado, even Steinbrenner never allowed his own decrepitude to send the proud Yankees into such a swan dive.

But Davis goes right on running the Raiders like a medieval fiefdom, meddling in every decision from behind his walker despite ample evidence that his football thinking has not been cutting edge since sometime in the 1980s.

The Davis inner sanctum has approximately the transparency of Castro's, so we can only speculate just how detached from reality he is these days. Last season, he spent a few minutes with one of the few working sportswriters older than he is - the Minneapolis Star-Tribune's 88-year-old Sid Hartman.

"Sunday, he sat in a Metrodome executive suite and talked about his refusal to retire until he wins two more Super Bowls," Hartman wrote. "He is convinced he can accomplish that."

Apparently, even Davis understands he doesn't have all day to manufacture these final moments of glory. Late last year, he sold a 20 percent stake in the Raiders, raising $150 million, part of which he promptly burned in a puzzling free-agent spending spree.

The Raiders' most obvious weakness last season was run defense, but Davis spent a bunch of his money on the secondary (DeAngelo Hall, Gibril Wilson) and his never-ending quest for a game-breaking receiver (Javon Walker). The biggest investment in the interior defense was a surprising $50 million deal for lineman Tommy Kelly, who brings more to the pass rush than the run defense.

Davis has gone through five coaches in the last seven years (Jon Gruden, Bill Callahan, Norv Turner, Art Shell and Lane Kiffin) and has been meddling with the latest almost from the beginning.

In fact, the Kiffin experiment is looking more and more like the Mike Shanahan experiment of 20 years ago, when Davis hired the then-35-year-old Broncos assistant and began undermining his authority almost immediately, firing him after 20 games.

Today, Shanahan's 138 regular-season head coaching wins put him 17th on the all-time list, higher than any Raiders coach. The parting was so bitter that Davis blew up his friendship with then-49ers president Carmen Policy when the Niners hired Shanahan as their offensive coordinator three years later.

In fact, Shanahan's need for total control over personnel and staff derives largely from his Raiders experience. That need for control also makes him a lot more like Davis than either would likely admit.

Davis made Kiffin, at 31, the youngest head coach in NFL history. These experiments with bright young assistants look suspiciously like attempts to relive Davis' youth, when he took over as coach of the Raiders at 33 and turned them from forlorn to competitive.

But Davis has never given his surrogates the power he had from the beginning as Raiders head coach and general manager. During training camp, Kiffin threw up his hands, admitting publicly he lacked authority to cut players from his own squad and bemoaning the lack of competition as players stacked up in the training room.

"Some guys have been released at other places, and people are picking them up," he said. "You'd like to pick up some of those guys and bring them in . . . and push our guys."

So much of what Davis does these days seems like an attempt to relive the past. Even when the rest of the team is crumbling, he tries to ensure it has an elite tandem at cornerback, be it first-round draft picks Charles Woodson and Phillip Buchanon earlier this decade or the current combination of Nnamdi Asomugha and Hall. Twenty-five years ago, when he last won a Super Bowl, he had Lester Hayes and Mike Haynes, the best in the league.

If Davis were ever able to own up to his own fallibility, he might yet become a sympathetic figure for all his contributions to football over the years and the Raiders' undeniable greatness once upon a time. But his ongoing megalomania makes that impossible. It fueled a resolve in Shanahan that has produced a 20-6 record against the Raiders since he took over the Broncos in 1995.

Somebody asked him last week if the bad blood with Davis dissipates as time passes.

"No, it doesn't dissipate at all," Shanahan replied.

This was easily his most honest and direct response of the Week 1 interview session, but it wasn't much of a sound bite, so his inquisitor persisted.

"I said it doesn't dissipate at all," Shanahan replied again, not backing off.

With that, he grinned and walked from the podium. "Might as well get him fired up," he said.

A taunt to the old dictator who can't let go.

Novacek's picks from MSNBC.

The Broncos have always been able to run the ball. If they get on a roll against Oakland, they’ll be tough to stop. This is an important game for Denver, too. It’s the one team in the division that can push San Diego for the division title. If the Broncos stumble here, kiss that goodbye.

Face it guys, Minnesota has AP, GB has the passing of the torch story. The rivalry between the two is one of the most intense in the league.

Meanwhile, Denver and Oakland is a fantastic rivalry but both teams are coming off very poor seasons, neither is expected to do much this season and there are no real storylines other than the usual Shanahan hates Al Davis play.

You cant really blame ESPN for covering the GB/Minn game over our game. Its about ratings and really who cares outside of AFC West fans about the second game? Think nationally, stop thiking homerish.

Why are we complaining?

We have a game coming up...who cares if we have announcers that are kissing our asses? We, the fans, know our team and that's all that counts!

Now, here's to our Broncos going out there on the field and proving that they are worthy of great coverage!

Royal has already shown me enough that he is going to be a very good #2 for us.

To think, Shanny hasn't been able to draft WR's forever and now we get Marshall and Royal in a span of 2 years. We could be set at WR for some time. All we need is a #3 to eventually replace Stokes now, but I'm liking our young offense.

They don't know that. We do though, and it's frustrating.

not the guys on the field, but the guys up in the booth do, they had the same camers the Raiders' guys in the booth used to challenge it. No one is stopping them from yelling in Cutlers ear to go up to the line and spike it.

Golic, Ditka, and Greenberg are literally rooting for the Raiders. What a bunch of ****ing hacks. I actually like Ditka, but he needs to distance himself from these morons.

Were they trying to draw the faiders offsides? Before that...because the spot was so close and the refs gave us the 1st down. He should have got the team to the line and snap it on 1st sound. That way, the Raiders wouldn't had time to challenge.

God damn our special teams

Good thing we didn't open with Buffalo again, their special teams alone would have dropped 30+ points on us...
