- The injury that forced Chiefs QB Brodie Croyle out of Sunday’s 17-10 loss to the Patriots is being called a “shoulder contusion.” Croyle was 11-of-19 passing for 88 yards before the injury. He was replaced by Damon Huard, who went 8-of-12 passing for 118 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

- Panthers rookie OT Jeff Otah suffered a left knee injury at the end of the first quarter, but was able to return late in the second quarter. Panthers starting LG Travelle Wharton also left the game, but it’s not clear how serious his injury is.

Belichick has no udpate on Brady
Posted: September 7th, 2008 | NFL.com Staff | Tags: New England Patriots, Tom Brady

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick had little to add about injured QB Tom Brady during his postgame press conference, saying he had no update on the status of the injury and that tests were being done.

Brady left Sunday’s 17-10 win over the Chiefs early in the first quarter with a left knee injury and was replaced by Matt Cassel. Brady was injured when he stepped up in the pocket to make a throw, and collided with Chiefs safety Bernard Pollard, who was down on the field in front of him. Brady’s left knee buckled as he followed through on his throw, and he went down holding the area immediately below his kneecap.

Brady was helped up off the field, and walked gingerly with the help of trainers to the sideline. He was later led down a staircase into Gillette Stadium by team personnel.

Cassel replaced Brady on the Patriots’ next drive. Brady was 7-of-11 passing for 76 yards before leaving the game.

Young, rookie Johnson leave game for Titans
Posted: September 7th, 2008 | NFL.com Staff | Tags: Chris Johnson, Tennessee Titans, Vince Young

The Tennessee Titans lost two offensive starters to injuries in a matter of minutes during the fourth quarter on Sunday, as QB Vince Young and rookie RB Chris Johnson left the game vs. the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Johnson was injured during a 1-yard run with 5:57 remaining in the game. He was able to leave the field under his own power, and later left the sidelines with a team trainer to go into the stadium. Johnson was replaced by LenDale White.

Young suffered what looks to be a left knee injury when he was hit following a pass attempt with just over four minutes remaining. Young was in obvious pain as he lay on the field clutching his knee. He was able to walk off the field under his own power, and remained on the sideline with ice on the knee. The Titans announced the injury as a sprained left knee. Young was replaced by Kerry Collins.

Burleson injured for Seahawks
Posted: News | NFL.com Staff | Tags: Injuries, Nate Burleson, Seattle Seahawks

The already thin Seattle Seahawks receiving corps appears to have taken another hit. Seattle WR Nate Burleson suffered an apparrent left knee injury midway through the third quarter, going down after he made a cut while running a route. Burleson was untouched on the play, and was clutching his left knee before trainers made their way onto the field.

The Seahawks entered the game without starters Bobby Engram and Deion Branch (recovering from torn ACL), as well as reserve Ben Obomanu (collarbone). Burleson had five receptions for 60 yards and a touchdown before leaving.

Injury updates: Nugent out for Jets
Posted: September 7th, 2008 | NFL.com Staff | Tags: Ernie Sims, Injuries, Mike Nugent

A few injury updates from around the league:

- The Jets lost kicker Mike Nugent to a thigh injury during the first half against the Dolphins. Nugent left the game late in the first quarter after a missed 32-yard field goal attempt, appearing to favor the injury. The Jets don’t have another placekicker on the roster, and the injury was serious enough for the team to not attempt a field goal on a fourth-and-13 from the Dolphins’ 22-yard line on the following drive. The Jets announced he is questionable to return. Punter Ben Graham is handling kickoff duties for the Jets.

- Lions LB Ernie Sims left the game late in the second quarter against the Falcons. Sims, who was carted off the sidelines a few minutes before halftime, was listed as questionable to return with an ankle injury.

- Saints reserve DT Antwan Lake left the game vs. the Bucs middway through the first quarter with an undisclosed injury.

Wonder if the Seahawks might have an interest in bringing back Darrell Jackson who Hasellbeck knows well.

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is expected to miss the rest of the 2008 season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, according to a source familiar with the injury.

While New England coach Bill Belichick said in his postgame press conference that he had no update on the status of Brady’s injury, two sources indicated it involved serious damage to the knee.

“It’s bad,” a team source said. “We’re going to have to play without him.”

Brady was hurt as he stepped up in the pocket to make a throw to wideout Randy Moss. Chiefs safety Bernard Pollard, who was on the ground, lunged forward and struck Brady’s leg, which buckled as he released the ball.

Brady was helped off the field and was later led down a staircase by team officials, presumably to undergo tests.

Fourth-year quarterback Matt Cassel, who had thrown just 39 passes in his career before Sunday, replaced Brady and completed 13 of 18 passes for 152 yards and a touchdown. Cassel, who backed up Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart at USC, hasn’t been a starting quarterback since high school. He won a competition with Matt Gutierrez during the preseason to retain the job as Brady’s primary backup.

ouch. it hurts just seeing that.

i wish Tom a full recovery

on another note, rather surprising Brady is not an offensive team captain. He doesnt have the C patch from looking at that pic.

Colston out 4-6 weeks with thumb injury
By BRETT MARTEL, AP Sports Writer
1 hour, 6 minutes ago

Buzz Up PrintNEW ORLEANS (AP)—Marques Colston, the New Orleans Saints’ top receiver during the past two seasons, had surgery on his left thumb and will miss four to six weeks.

Colston said he had a torn ligament resulting from a play Sunday when he reached forward to make a catch while taking a helmet-first hit to his hands from Ronde Barber.

“I don’t know if my thumb just got caught in an awkward position. It just bent all the way backward,” said Colston, who was wearing a cast over his left hand. “I guess the only silver lining is that I’m going to have a chance to come back and play a good portion of the season and hopefully be back in time for that playoff push.”

Colston tried to continue playing with the injury during the Saints’ 24-20 victory over Tampa Bay, but finished with only three catches for 26 yards. He made one catch after the injury.

Colston was a seventh-round draft choice out of Hofstra in 2006. At 6-foot-5, 225 pounds, he provides quarterback Drew Brees a big target and emerged as one of Brees’ favorite receivers during his rookie year. Colston went on to compile 2,241 yards receiving for 19 touchdowns in his first two seasons.

His 168 catches are more than any NFL receiver has had through only two seasons. During the summer, Colston agreed to a three-year contract extension that could keep him in New Orleans through the 2011 season.

“It’s tough, especially when you lose a guy as productive as him,” Brees said after Wednesday’s practice. “But there’s always an opportunity for a younger guy to step up or guys that might not get as much playing time ordinarily to step up and contribute even more.

“I’m confident with all our guys. However we piece it together, whoever is on the field knows what to do and they know they’ll get their opportunities.”

Most of Brees’ 343 yards and all three of his touchdown passes in the victory over Tampa Bay involved receivers other than Colston.

How much tougher it is for other receivers to get open without Colston drawing double coverage remains to be seen. But the Saints also have a new receiving threat in tight end Jeremy Shockey, who made his debut last Sunday with six catches for 54 yards, including a drive-extending 10-yard catch on third down that set up a field goal.

“It was good for him to come out and play as many snaps as he did and make six catches, some of them very big, and third-down conversions,” Brees said. “Certainly, he’s a guy I’m not going to shy away from for any reason even if we haven’t gotten as much time together as we hoped we would have through training camp, the preseason and such.”

Colston’s absence is expected to open the way for Robert Meachem to dress for a regular-season game for the first time since being drafted in the first round a year ago. New Orleans visits Washington on Sunday.

“You see the smile on my face? It’s a dream come true,” Meachem said. “I’ll do whatever it takes to make my teammates and coaches proud and so my family back home can hold their heads high.”

Meachem, who had a solid preseason that included a 60-yard touchdown and a 49-yard catch, was not sure why he was left off the active roster in the opener. The active receivers in the game were Colston, David Patten, Lance Moore, Devery Henderson and Terrance Copper. Copper and Moore both also play on special teams.

“Coach, he felt comfortable with the five guys who were at receiver. He’s been in the league a long time, so he knows what he’s doing. I didn’t second-guess that,” Meachem said. “Being a competitor, I wanted to be out there. It hurt not being out there, but we got the victory.”
