Obama raises $10 million after Palin speech
GOP raises over $1 million since speech

ST. PAUL, Minnesota - Barack Obama's presidential campaign said it raised $10 million Thursday following the Republican National Convention speech by rival John McCain's running mate, Sarah Palin.

Obama spokesman Bill Burton said Palin's address, heavily laced with digs at Obama, prompted an outpouring of donations from more than 130,000 donors.

"We're up over the previous record and the number is still climbing the more Palin's attacks are covered on cable and network news," Obama spokesman Bill Burton said.

The Republican National Committee announced earlier Thursday, at mid-afternoon, that it had raised well in excess of $1 million since Palin's speech. Republicans expect Palin to mobilize their donors. But the Obama camp promptly used the speech as a fundraising hook, sending an overnight e-mail to supporters to contribute.

McCain can no longer raise private donations for his campaign because he has decided to accept $85 million in public financing for the fall campaign. The Republican National Committee, however, can continue to raise money through its victory fund. His campaign reported raising $47 million in August, an impressive amount for the Arizona senator that broke his previous record.

Obama is not accepting the public funds and is continuing to raise money from private donors. Fundraisers have said he and the Democratic National Committee will have to raise more than $100 million in September to stay ahead of McCain.

A 48/40 lead (http://hotair.com/archives/2008/09/01/cbs-poll-more-men-likely-to-vote-for-mccain-because-of-palin-than-women/) after the convention turns quickly to dust (http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/09/04/opinion/polls/main4416798.shtml). Better still, the new poll was conducted from Monday to Wednesday, so her speech hasn’t fully impacted yet.

No crosstabs yet, but note well the trends in enthusiasm. Dude, I think she might be … The One.
McCain has also closed the enthusiasm gap some with Obama, but it still exists. Fifty-five percent of Obama’s supporters are enthusiastic about their choice, and now so are 35% of McCain’s. Last weekend, just 25 percent of McCain’s supporters were enthusiastic about him, compared to 67 of Obama’s supporters…

Independents in this poll are divided. In the poll conducted over the weekend, Obama had a six-point advantage with this group, but now the lead is three points, 39 percent to 36 percent.

The poll also shows that the majority of Clinton supporters continue to support Obama - 67 percent in this poll, up from 58 percent last weekend.

McCain has seen a similar uptick from white evangelicals since the weekend - 66 percent now, up from 57 percent.
The base solidifies, Hillary voters come home, and it’s a duel to the death for independents. I like these odds, as much as anyone constitutionally incapable of believing in victory can. (We’re still down seven in Gallup! (http://www.gallup.com/poll/110032/Gallup-Daily-Dent-Obama-Lead-Far.aspx)) Kaus offers the Democrats some good advice (http://www.slate.com/id/2199042/?from=rss#planthree) on Palin going forward; read it and ponder while I go turn the dial of my pessimism meter (http://hotair.com/archives/2008/09/04/michigan-independent-in-much-linked-palin-focus-group-is-a-cindy-sheehan-supporter/) up from level seven to level eight, i.e. resigned to heart-ache but now hoping for a smaller than expected margin of defeat. Exit question: When does the first creepy cultish poster (http://obeygiant.com/post/obama) of Palin emerge?

PRINCETON, NJ -- Barack Obama continues to hold a lead over John McCain, 49% to 42%, in the latest Gallup Poll Daily tracking (http://www.gallup.com/tag/Gallup%2bDaily.aspx) update.
http://media.gallup.com/poll/graphs/080904DailyUpdateGraph1_tyhnmbv.gif
The results are based on interviewing conducted Sept. 1-3. The vast majority of interviews on Wednesday evening were conducted before Sarah Palin gave her much-anticipated convention speech. However, the data do indicate that the initial first two nights of the convention -- the slimmed down Monday program in deference to Hurricane Gustav and Tuesday's speeches headlined by former senator Fred Thompson -- have, so far, done little to change voter preferences.
Thursday's interviewing will be the first to reflect the immediate impact of Palin's speech, and the coming days will give a truer measure of the effect the GOP convention -- including McCain's acceptance speech tonight -- is having on voters. Obama got a four percentage point increase in his share of the vote in Gallup Poll Daily tracking coming out of the Democratic convention last week, establishing a lead over McCain after the two had been exactly tied immediately prior to last week's convention. I always have to laugh at the right-wingnuts who get all excited when one poll out of a dozen shows McCheese with a slight lead.

It will be interesting to see where things stand in a few weeks after the conventions are in the rear view mirror.

The more I observe Caribou Barbie, the more I get the feeling that the Terry Schiavo nutjobs and the far right are going to love her, but she's just going to scare the bejesus out of everyone else (read: swing voters, moderates, and independents.)

Completely agree with that... From the looks of it McCain is going to focus on security and Iraq (with a sprinkle of alaskan energy). Maybe I'm wrong but i don't think that dog hunts any more.

With the prom queen on the ticket, I would expect abortion, gays, guns, and God to be front and center again also.

(Where's that "not this sh*t again" graphic when you need it?) ;)

There is always going to be some of that... I just don't think they can get away with using it like they did in 00 & 04.

I think the majority of Americans have gotten wise to that BS

I tend to agree - I don't think they can use it to camouflage their monumental screw-ups this time.
