Cecil Sapp. (The Denver Post)The Broncos worked out an injury settlement with Cecil Sapp and released their starting fullback from last season.

"I've got about three teams interested but I have to get healthy first," Sapp said from the Dove Valley visitors' parking lot Thursday.

Bothered by a strained hip flexor suffered in the Broncos' final preseason game Friday against Arizona, Sapp, a former Colorado State running back, was initially placed on the injured reserve list.

"Cecil is excited to get his release and start playing for another NFL team," said David Canter, Sapp's agent.

With Sapp gone, the Broncos are going with two rookies at fullback — Peyton Hillis, the starter, and Spencer Larsen.

Pittman also plays FB for us, that's probably the only reason he made the team (and the lucky injury to Aldridge).

Maybe we will see some TE as FB action again this year? Hell, put Lichtenstiger in at FB, i'd buy that for a dollar...

He'll be donning a Texans uni before Sunday.

This is a good move. Sapp's a tweener and not consistent at either RB position.

Yup. The "three teams" he refers to should be easy to narrow down:

Texans
Pats
AFC West rival

At best, he was a serviceable full back, but pretty much just dead roster weight for the past several years. Glad he's gone so we can make room in the RB/FB corps for someone with a little more up side and potential.

Bye Cecil! Thanks for playing!

I actually disagree with you and most everyone else on this board. Cecil maybe wasn't cut out to be an NFL RB, but he was a good FB for us. He wasn't Howard Griffith and he didn't have the potential that Hillis has, but Cecil managed to block well no matter who was behind him and he never bitched about playing wherever he was placed.

I heard a lot of sh*t about him over the years from CU fans, but he never deserved as much as he got. Yes I know we want amazing stars at every position, but its not going to happen and you deal with the best you have until you can find better. They found better than Cecil now, but until then Cecil was pretty darn good and will likely be a starter for another team along the way.

No way! Sapp was a great short yardage back and very good on special teams. He was a Colorado guy too. I'll miss Sapp and appreciated what he brought to the team.

Cecil 'The Diesel'... was never as good in the NFL as he was playing College ball for Colorado State. But I hope he finds a team.. he is a good person.

he isn't the most articulate person, but I always thought he was great on special teams and a good blocker

I agree, he was also useful in the red zone.

I dont care about his colorado roots so much, but I liked Cecil when he was here.

I think Cecil would have been a better fit as the short yardage back/FB than Pittman.

I don't know, Pittman is pretty tough to bring down in short yardage situations.

I'm not a big Pittman fan but the guy normally fights like hell for that extra yard.

Maybe you guys are right, but we'll see this season. I was probably spoiled with Griffith and am still waiting to see someone plow those wide open lanes.

It was time to move on and get someone on the roster with more potential. Have fun in Houston Sapp!

We certainly got nice production for where he was drafted. Good luck, Cecil.

Hope you catch on somewhere and stay in the league for a while.

I told everyone the day after the draft this was going to happen. Hillis is a real fullback, and one with tons of athletic talent and real football skills. 'Tweener backs like Sapp don't cut it at FB. The only time I've really seen the 'tweener thing work out is guys like HoGriff and Mike Anderson, guys who always had that beat 'em bloody mindset on the field. Sapp didn't have that, Kyle Johnson didn't have that and he was a "true" FB. Hillis has that and he's going to go out there and do the dirty work for us every Sunday.

Here's how I see it:

If the team has no better option than to play a LB at FB...then they should have kept Sapp and got rid of Larsen.

Look, I like Larsen at MLB and on special teams...but why the heck do we continuously take part in these stupid games of playing guys out of position. It never materializes and it ruins the players development IMO.

Sapp was a decent FB, a decent RB and an even better special teams player. If it is between he and Larsen for FB...give me a break.

When you're replaced by a 7th round rookie, you're not all that special. Sorry.

I think we all knew it was going to happen. In fact I believe January 28 someone here started a thread about Denver needing a true FB.

Owen hasn't cracked the starting line yet though.

Listing Larsen as a FB tells us that Shanny has great confidence in Hillis.

Obviously, Shanahan thinks he may need Larsen at MLB. But he needed a way to keep him on the roster. I very much doubt if we will ever see Larsen play FB.

I played FB for a bit - and was the 3rd string MLB - in some ways - the positions are very much the same.

I'm still upset that last year Shanny kept Sapp over my boy Kyle 'The Diesel' Johnson.
