RUDI’S CRAZY DAY IN DETROIT

Posted by Mike Florio on September 2, 2008, 9:17 p.m.

A strange thing happened to running back Rudi Johnson when he visited with the Detroit Lions on Monday.

Someone stole his stuff.

Seriously.

Specifically, and as we’re told by a reliable source (i.e., not the person who told Mort that Joey Harrington had agreed to terms with the Ravens on Monday, or the person who told John Clayton that Todd Bouman had agreed to terms with the Ravens on Tuesday), Johnson left his bags outside CEO Matt Millen’s office while he met with team officials and, ultimately, worked out a deal with the team.

So when Johnson came back to get his bags, they were nowhere to be found. Johnson and Millen were stumped.

Enter the eye in the sky.

The team checked the videotapes generated by the team’s in-house surveillance system, and they quickly identified the culprit.

So who might it have been? None other than Tatum Bell, who lost his gig with the Lions after Rudi arrived.

Per the source, Bell took the bags to the house of a female acquaintance. When confronted on the matter, Bell offered up some cockamamie story that he thought the bags belonged to someone he knew. The girl, however, said that she hadn’t seen Bell in several months and he showed up out of the blue and asked her to keep the bags for a while.

Johnson has retrieved the bags, and it’s our understanding that charges won’t be pressed.

Tatum apparently didn’t know that he was being monitored.

Fortunately, the displaced running back wasn’t Najeh Davenport.

BELL TO VISIT THE TEXANS (http://www.profootballtalk.com/2008/09/03/bell-to-visit-the-texans/)

Posted by Mike Florio on September 3, 2008, 10:21 a.m. EDT
Running back Tatum Bell, whose pilfering of Rudi Johnson’s bags (http://www.profootballtalk.com/2008/09/02/rudis-crazy-day-in-detroit/) ranks just beneath the Najeh Davenport hamper incident as one of the funniest NFL (http://www.profootballtalk.com/2008/09/03/bell-to-visit-the-texans/#) stories we’ve ever heard, reportedly will visit with the Houston Texans. (http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080903/SPORTS0101/809030335/1004) (Taco Bill has chimed in with his interpretation (http://www.profootballtalk.com/2008/09/03/5810/) of Bell’s next career.)
The fit is obvious — Bell previously played in Denver, and the Texans are emulating the Broncos’ attack, with former Broncos offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak now the head coach in Houston and former Broncos offensive line coach Alex Gibbs out of retirement to run the same system for the Texans.
The Texans currently have Ahman Green, Chris Taylor, and Steve Slaton at the top of the depth chart. If Bell were to sign, Green could be in trouble, even though he recently reduced his base salary from $3.8 million to $1.8 million (http://www.profootballtalk.com/2008/08/28/green-takes-big-pay-cut/).
If he’s smart, Bell won’t leave his stuff laying around where Ahman might see it.
Then again, if Bell were smart, he wouldn’t have bogarted Rudi’s bags.

TATUM “BELLHOP” STORY CONFIRMED
Posted by Mike Florio on September 3, 2008, 11:46 a.m. EDT
Various journalists are chasing for confirmation our bizarre story of former Lions running back Tatum Bell swiping the bags of Rudi Johnson during Rudi’s recent visit to the team’s facility. (Our original story on the subject is right here.)

As it turns out, at least one of them has obtained confirmation.

Tom Kowalski of Mlive.com reports that the story is in fact true. Writes Kowalski, “A source close to the situation confirmed that it did happen. Whether it was a prank or misunderstanding or something else, that has yet to be determined, but Johnson was ‘pretty miffed’ according to the source.”

As we hear it, it wasn’t a prank or a misunderstanding. And but for the presence of video cameras in the area from where the bags were bogarted, Bell might have gotten away with it.

Kowalski also advanced the story, with this nugget: “An interesting twist is that, earlier on Monday, Bell and Johnson had a good conversation about the city of Detroit, the team, practice schedules, etc. According to the source, though, that was before Bell ‘put two and two together’ about Johnson’s presence in Detroit.”

RUDI SPEAKS ABOUT BELLHOP INCIDENT

Posted by Mike Florio on September 3, 2008, 2:54 p.m. EDT

The Detroit Lions won’t address the reported luggage heist by former Lions running back Tatum Bell, committed against new Lions running back Rudi Johnson. Per Mlive.com, the team released the following statement: “We are aware of the media reports regarding former player Tatum Bell. Our sole focus continues to be on our regular season opener in Atlanta. We will not have any further comment on the media reports involving Tatum Bell.”

But this statement apparently doesn’t apply to, for example, Rudi Johnson.

Also per Mlive.com, Johnson confirms that Bell took two duffel bags from the team’s locker room on Monday, and that when he got the bags back on Tuesday, items were missing.

“Underwear, socks, credit cards and money. He left my money clip with no money in it,” said Johnson. “He should’ve taken the clip, too. It’s quite stupid if you ask me.”

Johnson also said that he saw Bell take his bags on surveillance tapes at the team’s facility.

“All of this happened after he got released and came in and got some stuff out of his locker,” Johnson said. “That’s when he scooped the bags up, some real shyster, conniving stuff.”

Johnson confirmed that he won’t press charges. “I’m not going to the police for this one,” he said. “I don’t need anybody else, I can handle it.

“He tried to make up some excuse, he tried to blame it on somebody else so I didn’t try to entertain something that didn’t make any sense. He tried to make up an excuse. He said some girl had got it and took it to somebody’s house. The story didn’t make any sense so I didn’t pay it any attention.

“He knows how I feel about it, trust me. He knows how I feel about it and it’s nothing positive. He said it was a mixup. It is what it is.”

Bell could be signing with the Texans. Coincidentally, the Texans host the Lions on October 19.

We have a feeling that, if Tatum is on the team, Rudi will be bringing only a toothbrush. And a crate of whoop-ass.

BELL SAYS “I AIN’T NO THIEF”

Posted by Mike Florio on September 3, 2008, 3:53 p.m.

Former Lions running back Tatum Bell denies that he stole anything from new Lions running back Rudi Johnson.

“I ain’t no thief,” Bell told the Detroit Free Press in a phone interview regarding Johnson’s contention that Bell stole two bags while Johnson visited the team facility on Monday. “I ain’t never been one, and I ain’t never going to be one.” (Doesn’t that technically mean he is a thief, he has been one, and he will be one again?)

Bell claims that he thought Johnson’s two Gucci bags belonged to former teammate Victor DeGrate, whom the Lions had released on Saturday. Bell says DeGrate had asked Bell to retrieve his backpack.

“I didn’t have a clue,” Bell said. “I wasn’t thinking or nothing at the time. I just grabbed the backpack and grabbed the other bag. It wasn’t in nobody’s locker or nothing like that. It was just sitting right there by the computers. . . . So I grabbed them and put them in the car.”

Bell claims he took the bags to a friend of DeGrate’s. He later was contacted by the team, and learned there was video of him taking Rudi’s bags.

“I said, ‘If you look on film, I wasn’t in no hurry or nothing. I was just going about my day,’ ” Bell said. “I tried to talk to Rudi yesterday, but he was pretty upset, so I let it go. So now it’s that I’m being a thief. I come to found out that the bags weren’t whose I thought they was. It was just an honest mistake, man.”

So how did the bags come back without the stuff in them?

“I didn’t go in the bags,” Bell said. “I didn’t open up no bags. I don’t have his stuff.”

Johnson maintains otherwise, and he claims that he doesn’t accept Bell’s explanation. “If anybody’s got some Perry Ellis boxers for sale,” Johnson said on Wednesday, “you know where they came from.”

So, apparently, they’ve agreed to disagree.

“I asked [Johnson]. I said, ‘What do I need to do to clear my name?’” Bell said. “I asked the organization, ‘What do I need to do to clear my name? What do I need to do to reimburse Rudi? What can I do to help?’

“But ain’t nobody saying nothing to me. They’re just stuck on the fact that I’m a thief. I’m like, ‘You all know me better than that.’ I ain’t never been in no trouble. You know what I’m saying? I ain’t never, ever, ever been in no situation like this. I’m just trying to clear my name.”

Tatum, the chances of you clearing your name are about the same as you getting another job in the NFL.

I still think the dump taken by Davenport was more out there.

There are some whacked people in this World.

Tatum isent making a ploy for unemployment, hes trying out for the Raiders...

His resume will read something like this:
1. Ex-Bronco
2. Sub 4.4 40 yard dash
3. Known thief and vengance driven duche bag
4. Player who you dont realy need on your team with your depth

Al Davis wont be able to resist, even with 3 backs on his roster he will cut someone valuble to the team just to make sure he has one of his commited NFL scum gracing his franchise...simple as that. The press statement will go something like this "Hes fast, hes got character, and he knows rivalry...plus hes fast whats not to love?"

Tatum is showing that by taking luggage, he is ready for his next career as a Sky Cap. He should ask for a tip.

TB's story sounds believeable... He never appeared to be one to get into trouble while here in Denver, but he also never came off as being especially bright.

Bell, who was cut Monday and was in the locker room to collect some of his belongings, insists he thought the bags belonged to former defensive end Victor DeGrate, who had been released Saturday. Bell said DeGrate called him and asked him to drop his bags off at a woman's house and he complied.

When the Lions called Bell on Tuesday to let him know they had him on videotape taking the bags, Bell said he called DeGrate and the woman and left messages. The woman later returned the bags, but they were empty. Bell was asked why he has offered to make restitution to Johnson even though another party might be guilty of the theft.

"I took it upon myself because it's my name. It's not Vic's name and it's not the woman's name, it's my name,'' said Bell, adding that he's disappointed that the Lions didn't support him in any way. "It hurts me so much. The Lions could've had my back and said 'Tatum's not like that.' It hurts.''

Bell also said that he was hoping DeGrate would help clear his name, too.

"Vic asked me to get his bag and he said it was by the players lounge,'' Bell said. The players lounge is directly across from the computer area, where Johnson said he left his bags.

"I saw the bag and thought that was it. I don't want to put anything on Vic, it was my mistake. I asked Vic to contact my agent to let everybody know (he asked me to get the bag). I don't know if he did,'' said Bell, adding that he might know why DeGrate doesn't want to get involved. "(The Lions) might bring him back - he doesn't want to hurt his future.''

I think it was an honest mistake that is being blown out of proportion. If it was an honest mistake...then you have to question the make-up of Rudy Johnson...being such a prick about it.

I mean TB offered to do whatever it took to make it right. Does anyone really believe he purposely tried to steal someones bags...come on? The guy has millions in the bank.

I don't want Tatum back...but teams should at least give him the benefit of the doubt. He's alot better than many RB's out there. Just my opinion.

What is the difference between Delta Airlines and Tatum Bell?

Delta charges $50 to check your bag, Tatum checks your bag for fifties.

exans Did Not Work Out Tatum Bell --
Thu Sep 4, 2008 --from FFMastermind.com
The Houston Chronicle reports two reports made the rounds Wednesday about the Texans being interested in RB Tatum Bell and RB Rudi Johnson. One report said the Texans worked out Bell, which wasn't true. They were not interested in Bell. Johnson, who signed with Detroit, was quoted as saying he was on his way to Houston when the Lions called. The Texans spoke with his agent, but no visit was set up.

DEGRATE REFUTES TATUM BELL’S EXPLANATION
Posted by Mike Florio on September 9, 2008, 1:00 p.m. EDT
In what likely will be the last word in one of the greatest stories we’ve ever heard (especially since we, you know, broke it), former Detroit Lion Victor DeGrate has blown Tatum Bell’s excuse for taking Rudi Johnson’s bags out of the water.

“What he did is his business,” DeGrate told the Detroit Free Press. “Why he said what he said, I don’t know. I can’t do nothing for you or for him as far as that goes.”

As to the key fact — Bell’s contention that he thought he was taking a bag that belong to DeGrate — DeGrate said that Bell is full of DeCrap.

Specifically, DeGrate said he didn’t ask Bell to pick up anything.

“The way I just figure, he got caught up in a jam and that was the best thing going at the time, was to say what he said,” DeGrate said.

Last week, Bell appeared on The Dan Patrick Show in an effort to clear his name. Given DeGrate’s comments, that’s now impossible
