The Denver Broncos are in the process of trading nickel cornerback Domonique Foxworth.
The cornerback was told by the team that he is close to being traded and to go home and wait to be traded. Foxworth said that he was told that there are several teams Denver is talking to and that he has no clue where he will play next week only that it won't be with the Broncos.
Foxworth said the Broncos are handling the situation with class.
"They didn't have to give me a warning," Foxworth said. "They are being classy about it. I'm not upset about it at all."
The Patriots, Redskins, Saints, Rams and Browns are among the teams that need a cornerback.
Foxworth, entering his fourth NFL season, has been Denver's nickel cornerback. With him on his way out, Denver's backup cornerbacks behind Champ Bailey and Dre' Bly are Karl Paymah and rookie Jack Williams.
Bill Williamson covers the NFL for ESPN.com.

Wow...I've been a Foxworth basher for sure...but I am a little concerned about our depth. I like Paymah...but JMFW is a rookie...and that's all we got. Wow!
I wonder what we're going to trade him for? A draft pick?

this was inevitable.
He was going to walk after this season anyways and the FO had no intention of resigning him...
05 draft looks pretty bad right now (even though i still think Darrent would have got a contract extension from the Broncos if he was still here. Bly would have never come here had Darrent been with us still)

I thought he looked horrible against Arizona. Not physical enough, always goes high to tackle. Super nice guy, good person, but just not physical enough.

09-01-2008, 12:15 PM
Speaking of Bly, I wonder how his ankle is? Could it be that he is ready to play, because this leaves us really thin at CB , and Paymah did NOT impress.
JMFW IS just a rookie, and not ready.
This is one move I question at this time!

This does not surprise me.
It would be tough to keep both Foxworth and Paymah after the year and Jack Williams needs to see the field.

It's obviously not logical to trade Foxworth for a DB in return...
Anyone have a list of FA's?

09-01-2008, 12:20 PM
I think one of the main reasons Shanahan has been trying to get rid of Dominque Foxworth is because of his influence over the other players in the lockerroom about the NFLPA rules.
Foxworth has stated that he wants to be the next union president of the players association. A player, much like Jay Feeley (who got cut), who is extremely involved in the NFLPA, can cause dissention in the lockerroom because they advocate player's rights at all times. They might tell a player they don't have to do this, or do that, or practice has run too long, or whatever. They know their rights.
This caused problems for Troy Vincent later in his career after he became heavily involved in the NFLPA.
Don't know if this is the reason, but it might be part of the problem.

So if its a player, which teams have too many good safeties and or MLB's, or possibly a pass rushing/ run stopping DT they can afford to let go.
Those are all dime a dozen players, right?

At this point in the season after you have trimmed your roster down to 53 you really are taking a risk trading just for picks. You a trading at least a servicable player for a pick and now you have to go find one to replace. I think it could be a player maybe a LB with Boss hurting or a DL player.
Who knows just throwing spitballs against wall at this point.

I know there are some here who believe there is a lot to be desired from his play on the field, but he has been nothing but class on and off the field. What he's done for the Denver Community and what he has helped to in placing bandages on the franchise and families of those impacted by the passing of Darrent Williams will never be forgotten or replicated.
It will be a sad day when we lose this young, upstanding player and man from this team. Maybe he never realized his potential here on the field in Denver, but he deserves more salutes and kudos than one could ever give for the lives he's reached and touched during his brief stay in the Denver community.
Bless Foxworth, and I wish him nothing but happy trails in the future.

Foxy is young. Has alot of years to play, and has been relatively healthy except for the ankle injury, but no serious recurring issues.
I would rather have a trade where DEN and another team trade young player for young player. Each team has needs and they just agree to give up to get what they need to make their rosters complete for the upcoming year.

If we even suggested a 3rd, that would drop everyone from bothering asking. No way in hell would I as a GM give up a 3rd based off tape of what we have seen over the past 4 years.
A late 4th, maybe 5th or at best a conditional 3rd dependant on play is about as good an offer as anyone will do (except Dan Snyder who is a ****ing moron).

Meanwhile, we should actually be talking him up, since these other teams are probably monitoring this board to figure out how much he's worth.
if NFL front office executives are basing their opinions of players from message boards/media outlets, they dont deserve a job (hence why Teddy Sundquist is no longer in the league)

A late 4th, maybe 5th or at best a conditional 3rd dependant on play is about as good an offer as anyone will do (except Dan Snyder who is a ****ing moron).
It'd have to be something that would get the equivalent value for his tender if it's a pick, I can't see Shanahan trading him for something that couldn't at least become a 3rd.

Guess we'll see if he does get traded, but I don't see Shanahan giving him away. This isn't like the NHL where you only have to get under the cap when the season starts. He's been budgeted for and isn't terrible. There's no reason to trade him simply to give him away.

I agree, but a 4th would be a good value for him.
Its not like this is unprecendented. We gave up a 1st round pick in Lelie for a lot less. So giving up a late 3rd round pick for a 4th isn't giving him away.

Considering teams have had essentially since February to offer just that to ensure his services, and nobody came calling, I find it hard to believe they'll get it now.....especially considering how bad he's looked this preseason in particular. His game certainly hasn't magically improved in the last few months.

This ENTIRE preseason he has showed me Diddly-poo. He must be a practice- Probowler because I heard nothing but good things about him from the posters on this site and writers from RMN/DPO, but I have not seen anything rsembling that in the preseason games that I have witnessed.
I want to see JMFW as our nickel corner (I realize that there will be growing pains)and keep Paymah as our 4th CB. I want to see Foxy shopped and hopefully we can get a 4th for him. He will be a FA next year and quite honestly, some team will be willing to make him a starter and pay him as such, he will not stay in Denver. So before he gets even further exposed to the rest of the league--lets get something BACK for him. Foxy must go......

Why sell the farm for Ladell Betts? Foxy for Betts straight up sounds reasonable to me. Both are decent backups at their positions, and Foxworth has starting experience all over the defensive backfield.
If someone stakes a claim on a practice squad guy, the Broncos have 24 hours to match the deal, is that correct? Perhaps the Broncos are desperate to keep someone (like Barrett or Hackney) and want to trade Foxworth to make space.
Not sure if that rules applies to PS though, I know it applies to various places in league business.

He was cut:
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have announced that they’ve cut defensive back Eugene Wilson.
Wilson was signed by the Bucs as a free agent earlier this year after spending his first five NFL seasons with the Patriots.
He started 15 games as a rookie in 2003, which ended with a Super Bowl win. In 2004, he started 14 games and earned a second Super Bowl ring.
He started every game in 2005, but injuries limited him to four games in 2006 and he started only six games in 2007.
Wilson was due to earn a base salary of $1 million under his one-year contract with the Bucs.

Hopefully JMFW is up to the job, otherwise, we'll probably regret trading a young up and coming corner when we had a 31-32 year old overpaid corner that will be soon leaving the scene.

First thing, thanks to Foxy who was a model citizen and proved to be a good - not great, but good - CB for a 3rd round pick.
Secondly, for those commenting how this helps us now - no matter how good or bad we looked this preseason, the 2008 Denver Broncos are still a rebuilding football team. Sure they could surprise and wind up in the playoff hunt, but the team is still rebuilding towards championship status. With that, getting a pick now for Foxy would be great considering he would walk anyway and I don't see much of a drop between he, Paymah and JMFW.

Broncos nickleback Domonique Foxworth was told this morning that the Broncos were about to trade him. Foxworth did not attend practice today.
"I wish the Broncos and Mike Shanahan and Pat Bowlen well," Foxworth said. "I appreciate the time they gave me here. But if they feel it's time for me to move on, then I have to move on. I'm fine with it."
Foxworth had been a part-time starter and nickleback each of his first three seasons with the Broncos. However, he had a particularly tough pre-season game Friday against Arizona.
Meanwhile, rookie Jack Williams had two interceptions during the pre-season.
Karl Paymah will now be the nickleback, with Williams moving up to dimeback.

Safety Roderick Rodgers was the final player signed to the Broncos practice squad Monday.
Rodgers was waived when the team picked up safety Calvin Lowry off waivers from Tennessee on Sunday. Rodgers, a second-year player from Wisconsin, played in the Broncos' final two games of 2007. The other players signed to the practice squad are: quarterback Darrell Hackney, wide receiver Travis Wilson, running back P.J. Pope, safety Josh Barrett, guard Mitch Erickson, defensive tackle Steven Harris and defensive end Ryan McBean.

What I don't get is why they send him home and tell them they are going to trade him...when they haven't gotten a deal done. Great...the player respects the organization for doing so...but it devalues any deal you might get. Teams start to think, you're going to get rid of him no matter what...so why pay more than they absolutely have to.

I'm thinking the same thing. I'd take a 3rd or a combination of 4th and 6th, or something like that.
The thing is I'm looking at their roster and there is nothing on the roster that is simular value. It'll hav to be for draft picks. And it'll be for good value considering that they are willing to trade and we've traded with them before.
Lets also remember that Fox started that game vs. Dallas and maked up well against T.O.

I think we are more young and talented on the offensive side of the ball. But I wouldn't mind it if we took the entire next draft and just spent it on the defensive side. Look at the roster outside of Champ, DJ, Doom, and Thomas (maybe) there isn't a defensive starter that doesn't have major holes in there games. IE injury with Robertson, journeymen talent ie McCree.

Broncos | Foxworth to be traded
Mon, 1 Sep 2008 17:48:20 -0700
Denver Broncos CB Domonique Foxworth will be traded in the next day or two. He was held out of practice Monday, Sept. 1, while the deal is finalized.
So does Denver have the deal in place and just tying up the loose ends? I would go crazy if Denver could pull out a 2nd round pick.

If it's the Redskins, I wouldn't mind us trading Foxworth for Erasmus James and a draft pick.
Erasmus is a Shanahan player. He's been injured the past 2 seasons, but his rookie year he had 4 sacks.
Edit: Actually, I doubt this would happen. I didn't realize Redskins traded for him from Vikings. Doh!

probably still a defense that can't stop people. I totally agree with this move foxy just isn't a good football player. He doesn't totally stink but it's a good move to stockpile picks. Especially since Foxworth doesn't seem to be good enough to start.

ALLEN PARK, Mich. — Shaun Cody might be down to his last chance as a Detroit Lion.
Three years after the Lions were looking to him as their defensive tackle of the future, Cody is now fighting just to make the team.
Cody reported to training camp lighter than at any other point in his NFL career, saying he thinks he understands the commitment demanded by the pro game.
"Now I know what it is going to take," Cody said. "I realized that if I wanted to keep doing this, I had to take it more seriously. I have to be a professional and work harder."
The Lions traded up to draft Cody in the second round in 2005, one round after taking his college teammate, Mike Williams. Cody's Lions career hasn't flopped like Williams' but hasn't been an overwhelming success, either.
Six weeks into his first season, on Oct. 10, 2005, Cody had 1 1-2 sacks against Carolina. He hasn't had another sack since. In 2006, he missed 10 games with a toe injury and had only 15 tackles, then had just 34 tackles while playing all 16 games in 2007.
That's not much from the player that Detroit hoped would be a force alongside Shaun Rogers.
"I have to make plays this year," Cody said. "It is important for me to have a big year. I know that."
Cody weighs 295 pounds after spending his first three NFL seasons over 300. Lions coach Rod Marinelli, a longtime defensive line assistant in Tampa, mandated that all his linemen come in under 300 pounds this year, a rule perhaps easier to obey following the 350-pound Rogers' departure for Cleveland.
"I figure if they can be 310, why not be 295," Marinelli said. "Our defensive package is about movement, quickness and finesse. They don't need the extra size."
The key to Cody's future in Detroit might come down to his ability to get his first sacks in nearly three years. Marinelli's Tampa Two defensive scheme relies on a strong pass rush from the defensive line, something that has been lacking in recent years.
"When you get a sack, it just about ends that offensive series, and that's key," Marinelli said. "We have to get that production from our front four. That's big."

<FORM>Comment: Cody is a career backup who gives valuable depth along the defensive line. He has good size and initial quickness and can be explosive with his first step. He is at his best when on the move and is an effective interior stunter that can redirect and make plays along the line of scrimmage. He plays with good pad level and uses his hands well. Cody doesn't have great power or strength to hold the point, especially versus double teams, but he does have quick hands to separate from blocker and leverage the ball. He needs to expand his pass rush package as he isn't very active pressuring the quarterback. Cody appears to have talent to develop into a front-line player but hasn't progressed as well as the Detroit front office would like. An injury that sidelined him in 2006 hindered his development and the 2008 season should show marked improvement</FORM>
