FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- The New England Patriots signed two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Deltha O'Neal on Monday, two days after they released exhibition-season starter Fernando Bryant.
O'Neal
O'Neal spent the last four seasons with Cincinnati after playing his first four with Denver. He had 31 interceptions for three touchdowns in 116 games, including 75 starts. He also scored one touchdown on a kickoff return and two on punt returns.
The Bengals released him on Saturday when teams had to reduce their rosters to the regular-season limit of 53 players. Bryant's release had left the Patriots with two rookies among their top four cornerbacks.
They also claimed two players off waivers -- tight end Jason Pociask from the New York Jets and offensive tackle Mark LeVoir from the St. Louis Rams. They released tight end Stephen Spach and signed offensive lineman Jacob Bender and tight end Tyson DeVree to the practice squad.

Nice Denver just scored at least a TD out of just this signing.

Quality signing. He might not have been what we wanted, but this is a good move by the Pats.

Good luck with Eddie Royal on the double move.........Pats front 7 is oldish for the most part,
There secondary is older and trashy.

Nobody can argue about Deltha's talent...but he's never really put it all together. I mean...this guy has Champ like skills and a peanut resting on his shoulders!

It seems like New England is always bringing FA's in and then letting them go.
Seems to me that...this activity is part of their scouting department. They bring guys it...suck them dry of their of knowledge regarding their prior teams...and then kick them to the curb.

Ya, that is why the Pats signed LaMont Jordan - to get the scoop on the Raiders... :spit:

Deltha gave up the final TD that gave the Pats the win that night....
but I always felt that the failure by Shanahan to RUN in the last drive of the third and the next series in the fourth ( I'm not sure about the exact timing but it was late in the 2nd half) were the ultimate reason we lost that game.
Had he not passed three straight times (all passes were incomplete and stopped the clock) on both those series the Pats would not have had the time on the clock to even make that final drive.
Yes NE was stuffing our run, but we had KANNELL (our 3rd string QB) in and he just couldn't execute the plays. Even though we had the lead at the time, it was obvious that eventually the Pats were going to get something going, so while I guess you can't fault him for trying to move the ball, he should have run the clock some. Those two series only took about 30 seconds off the clock.
anyway Deltha did get beat...and went into Shannys dog house afterward forevermore.

Their defense is old but they do get stops when they need too.
Or just score a bunch of points and let them run wild.

Isn't that the game where the Pats took a safety then pinned us down inside the twenty?

No way they can win a SB with a D that bad. They will still win a ton of games in the regular season, but come playoff time that D will be their downfall.

There are several things to consider why we lost that game.
To me, Deltha gave up the TD, but thats not why I accuse him of fault. I accuse him because on the safety kick that ensued with like 3 minutes remaining, he let it bounce a couple times before picking it up and then hesitated, resulting in us starting inside the 20. That should NEVER happen on a safety kick. Hell, I just looked it up, and he had a return of -1 yards to the 15 yard line. THAT IS PATHETIC.
Also, on that ensuing possession, several things to consider.
Portis had a run on 1st down for 2 yards, NE timeout with 2:41 remaining. 2nd and 8, and guess what, we had a fricken false start. THAT IS PATHETIC. 2nd and 13 now, and Portis runs for 7 yards. NE timeout, 2:31 remaining. 3rd and 6 on our own 19. Now, next play we could've called a run play, probably wouldn't have gotten the 6 yards for the first down though, but would've eaten up some more clock. Instead, we call a pass play, and it was going to be for a first down, but our favorite WR Ashley Lelie drops the pass. Ugh. So, its 4th and 6 with 2:25 remaining about.
Now, Micah Knorr punts, and he actually had a decent punt of 48 yards, returned 9 yards to the Pats own 42 yard line.
Next up, we couldn't cover/stop Kevin freakin Faulk. He had 3 catches for 40 freakin yards. And then of course, the 18 yard TD pass to Givens.
That last 3 minutes was just awful.

Yeah , you're right. The last 3 minutes WAS pathetic. A lot of bad plays or non plays by the whole team. And Deltha was involved in several.
It still wouldn't have come down to that if we would have run the clock earlier. The defense held them over and over, even forcing the intentioanl safety ( which was one of the only times Bellicek actually outcoached Shanny), and finally gave up the score. They were just too gassed at the end because they never got a rest.
Hindsight is 20-20.

you know what? lets just be thankful that we now have our own franchise QB who will never miss a start for 14 seasons and that the days of Kannel and Buerlein are over.

I couldn't sleep after we lost that game. I mean hell, we had them beat with freaking Kanell at QB.
This signing makes sense... I mean, Deltha has already won a game for them.

That team sucked and didn't deserve the win. Danny Freaking Kannell was the QB. I think he is tied with Brodie for Career NFL wins.

I asked my friend, a huge and usually well informed Pats fan who was starting opposite Ellis Hobbs. He didn't know.
That's usually not a good thing for their secondary.

Not if they steal the opponent's offensive signals.... that's worked quite well for a decade or so....

Makes a bad secondary even worse. For every play he makes, he gives up three.

Actually, it was defensive signals, which allowed Nancy to come back and win those tight games. There were rumors of them listening into the offence signals, but they remain unsubstantiated (but probably some truth to it).
