Broncos signed RB P.J. Pope to their practice squad.
A deep sleeper. Andre Hall and others have come off Denver's practice squad to make impacts in the past and Pope could be next. He's played a similar scheme (with Green Bay) before and looked capable this preseason.

Rogers should sit another year on the practice squad anyways IMO. Hasn't shown enough to merit a roster spot. We're just terribly thin at safety.

It seems that Lowry was disgruntled after Michael Griffin was moved into his starting slot halfway through the season. We may have a real bargain here.

Supposedly either Rod Rogers or Marquand Manuel will go, Rogers has PS eligibility for another year and could end up there.

Positives: Smart, instinctive player who is rarely caught out of position...Has the quickness and burst to close on the ball and shows the loose hips needed to turn and run coming out of transition...Has good field presence and is most effective when playing deep in center field, as he is alert to blocking schemes and does a very good job of keeping plays in front of him...Has the foot speed to handle slot receivers in man coverage...Does a good job of attacking the ball in the air, possessing the natural hands, leaping ability and timing to get to the pass at its high point...Shows the range and lateral moves to string plays out and is effective at shutting down the cutback lanes in run support...Has the acceleration to elude the initial tackler on returns and can gain valid yardage when given room to field the ball.
Negatives: Will step up and fill in run support, but does not have the bulk or strength to create a pile or disengage from offensive linemen in action at the line of scrimmage...
Has the speed to cover receivers one-on-one, but often tries to make the big play and go for the interception rather than handle route responsibilities...Frame is not ideal for strong safety, but he has the speed to shift to free safety...Has good hands to field the punt, but has had a high amount of fair catches in this category and is too quick to put his hand up rather than attack the coverage...Has thin calves and marginal leg strength, preventing him from holding ground at the point of attack...More quick than fast, but lacks the second gear and explosive acceleration to recover when beaten.
Lowry is a quick athlete with a frame more suited for free safety. He is a smart, instinctive player whose ability to locate the ball quickly is one of his better assets. He appears more comfortable lining up deep in the zone, where he has a better chance of keeping the action in front of him, rather than trailing the receiver in man coverage.
Lowry shows good range to close on the ball and pursue ballcarriers along the perimeter. He does not have the sand in his pants to hold his ground working in-line and while he shows good urgency to fill, he can get bounced out of the rush lanes. He showed better tackling form in 2005, but likes to arm tackle too much rather than breaking down and wrapping when working in space.
He needs to have a clear lane to be effective in backside pursuit, but will never be confused for the second coming of Doug Plank (ex-Bear) when he comes to blowing people up as a tackler or applying constant pressure on the pocket. He can add some value to his draft stock as a punt returner, but lacks big-play ability here and spends more time calling for the fair catch rather than returning the ball.

A clear upgrade and a very smart move to grab him right away.
Could play FS or SS, but the key is hes an instant upgrade over Hamza,Barrett or Rogers.
Smart.

Yep, real good move. I feel slightly less nauseous about our safety situation now.

hes an upgrade over Marquand Manuel.
http://nfldraft.rivals.com/cviewplayer.asp?Player=3899&type=scoutingreport#scouting
Pros: Lowry is a smart, heady defender who reads and reacts quickly and knows his responsibilities within a defense and has the athleticism to carry them out. He tests out more than adequately on speed and quickness, combined with his fine intangibles allows him to be a well-developed performer. He is a sure tackler who plays bigger than his size. He has good movement skills with the ability to change directions easily and go sideline to sideline. In pass coverage, he grades out well in zone coverage where he has the speed to cover the deep zones and shows the burst to close on the underneath patterns. He invariably seems to always be around the ball. While he is only an average athlete, he is very sudden in his movements.
Cons: He can be overaggressive at times and fail to make the tackle. His overall coverage skills are only average, mainly due to little experience in man situations. His ability to cover the slot receiver or tight end will determine if he can play in the dime package and ever challenge for starting time. He is best suited for zone coverage.
Numbers: At the Combine, he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.49 seconds with a 36” vertical jump and 10’ broad jump. He did 15 reps in the 225-pound bench press. His agility drills were among the best times for the position.

When the Broncos set their 53-man, season-opening roster Saturday, they really meant it was set for one day.
The Broncos claimed third-year safety Calvin Lowry, an 11-game starter for Tennessee last season, off waivers Sunday.
Lowry, 25, was selected by the Titans out of Penn State in the fourth round of the 2006 draft and was among the NFL's surprise cuts Saturday.
The Broncos also signed former Chicago Bears running back P.J. Pope (5-feet-9, 205 pounds) to their practice squad.
The Broncos released tight end Brett Pierce, who had been placed on their waived/injured list, but will have to make one more cut to make room for Lowry. The Broncos initially had four safeties on their 53-man roster: Marlon McCree, Marquand
Denver Broncos
Manuel, Hamza Abdullah and Roderick Rogers. From that group, Lowry would be considered the hardest hitter in run support, a role vacated when veteran John Lynch abruptly left training camp in late July.
Meanwhile, the Broncos brought back four players who were cut Saturday to their practice squad Sunday, including No. 3 quarterback Darrell Hackney.
Hackney played well in the Broncos' final preseason game at Arizona, completing 17-of-26 passes for 208 yards and rushing for 40 yards before taking four knees to run out the clock. But with their 53-man roster already carrying the injured Ryan Torain, Tom Nalen, Boss Bailey and Ebenezer Ekuban, the Broncos couldn't afford the luxury of keeping a third quarterback on the active list.
Also re-signed to the practice squad were offensive lineman Mitch Erickson, defensive tackle Steven Harris and safety Josh Barrett.
The Broncos still have three practice squad openings, an indication they are trying to sign players cut from other teams. Mike Klis: 303-954-1055 or mklis@denverpost.com (mklis@denverpost.com)

He's an upgrade over what we had last year in Lynch, and an upgrade over what we have in a run support S right now. My guess is that he fills the role we had slated for Lynch, where he starts but isn't a part of the nickle package.

Anybody notice that the two profiles basically said the opposite thing. One says he's avg in coverage the other says he was made for it

I don't know anything about him and I'm not going to get excited. I just hope it's not like when we picked up Niko all the reports on him made it sound like he could be a starter if he was on almost any other team besides seattle.
Well that didn't work out to well. So I will keep my excitment down until I see him play.
I like Hamza and McCree, I think there a solid if unspectacular pair of safeties and I like this signing too. Lowry could compete with Rogers and Barrett for our other starting spot in a year or too.

I think Niko has been the thumper in the middle we thought he would be, Webster just worked his ass off to win the job. Now we have a special teams ace and a solid backup, I still like the Niko signing. Competition was the goal and it brought out the best.
With that said I agree on waiting to see something before we get too excited

Nah see ive seen Lowry since Penn State....
hes always been a good safety. Nothing spectacular but just all around good....
Nikos hype came from being a BEAST on special teams knocking heads off there.
But nobody ever seen him in the NFL playing MLB because he didnt get a shot to play MLB since he sat behind a pro bowler.
So people including MYSELF hyped him up because we thought all he needed was a shot to play...
But when you turn on the lights and actually watch him @ MLB you could see right away that his hips are stiff and he is slowwwwwwwwwwww.

I'm happy we have Niko we need depth and special teams need alot of work, but i was really disappointed when he wasn't the mlb we thought he would be. He got hyped up way to much, I was expecting another Al Wilson the way people were building him up....Fail. But thats alright hopefully he kills some kick returners.

The MLB position is SO deep next year. Laurinaitis, Maueleuga, Ellerbe, Beckwith are all big time talents from big time schools. We should be able to find a starter in round 1 or 2.
