<p>The Palin Troopergate scandal as governor - which at its core is about her use of her public office to pursue a private vendetta by firing a public safety commissioner - is <a href="http://hatthief.blogspot.com/2008/08/vetting-sarah-palin-irl-stambaugh-walt.html">not the only time</a> Sarah Palin fired a public employee for reasons apparently unrelated to job performance. Hat Thief <a href="http://hatthief.blogspot.com/2008/08/vetting-sarah-palin-irl-stambaugh-walt.html">has the details</a>. From the <a href="http://nl.newsbank.com/nl-search/we/Archives?p_product=AS&amp;p_theme=as&amp;p_action=search&amp;p _maxdocs=200&amp;p_topdoc=1&amp;p_text_direct-0=0F79408854D0C20B&amp;p_field_direct-0=document_id&amp;p_perpage=10&amp;p_sort=YMD_date:D&amp;s_tra ckval=GooglePM">Anchorage Daily News</a> December 1997:</p><blockquote><p>A recall of Mayor Sarah Palin is off the table, at least for now, according to a group calling itself Concerned Citizens for Wasilla. The group of about 60 residents was formed Friday in response to Palin's controversial firing of Police Chief Irl Stambaugh. Members say they're concerned about the direction taken by Palin since her election last fall, and discussed a recall.</p></blockquote><p>What happened?</p>
<blockquote><p>Wasilla Mayor Sarah Palin fired the city's police
chief and the library director without warning Thursday, accusing them
of not fully supporting her efforts to govern.
Irl Stambaugh and Mary Ellen Emmons said letters signed by Palin were
dropped on their desks Thursday afternoon telling them their jobs were
over as of Feb. 13 and that they no longer needed to report to work.</p></blockquote><p>Not fully supporting her efforts to govern? Hmmm. From the ADN</p><blockquote><p>Emmons has been the city's library director for seven
years. Stambaugh has headed the police department since it was created
in 1993. Before that, he served 22 years with the Anchorage Police
Department rising to the rank of captain before retiring.
While both struggled with Palin when she was first elected in October, they said the letters caught them off guard.
<em>Both had publicly supported Palin's opponent, long-time mayor John
Stein, during the campaign last fall. When she was elected, Palin
questioned their loyalty and even initially asked for their
resignations.</em> But both said Thursday that they thought things had been
worked out.
''After the initial roller coaster, we were ready to work for Mayor
Palin,'' Emmons said. ''Unfortunately I think we were both fired for
politics.''</p></blockquote><p>Palin, when asked by a reporter about the firings, first denied that they had happened. When the reporter went back to the police chief:</p><blockquote>Stambaugh's response was to read part of the letter given to him.
''Although I appreciate your service as police chief, I've decided it's
time for a change. I do not feel I have your full support in my efforts
to govern the city of Wasilla. Therefore I intend to terminate your
employment. . . . ''
''If that's not a letter of termination, I don't know what is,'' he said.
</blockquote>
So Palin lied, as she did, by her own admission, in
the later firing of police chief Monegan. Stambaugh eventually sued for
wrongful dismissal. Palin won -&nbsp; because the judge ruled that a mayor
can legally fire a police chief for any reason she wants, political
payback or otherwise:
<blockquote>Singleton said that under state law, police chiefs serve at the
behest of the mayor unless otherwise specified by city ordinance.
Stein, the former mayor, had worked out an agreement with Stambaugh
forbidding termination without cause, but the city council never voted
on it, Singleton ruled.
</blockquote>I'm curious: did McCain know about all this? Who vetted her?

It's still possible she could be impeached as governor over troopergate.
Wouldn't that be a fine October surprise for McCain?

Nothing to see here. This is all you got! Nothing to see here. Seriously this is nothing. Nothing to see here.

Just getting the excuses out of the way for her supporters.

With all the scandals involving Alaska republicans right now, McCain's VP choice had me scratching my head.

I'm wondering if this lady was properly vetted... might of been an overreaction by the mcCaine camp.

Early this year, an op-ed in the Anchorage Daily News ripped into Gov. Sarah Palin's appearance on a morning "shock jock" radio show as "plain and simple one of the most unprofessional, childish and inexcusable performances I've ever seen from a politician."

So what happened? Palin has repeatedly feuded with the state's Senate president, Lyda Green, over a wide range of legislation. Last January, Palin appeared on "The Bob and Mark Show," whose host Bob Lester despises Green. That's when the trouble started:

Early on in the conversation before Palin started to crack up, Lester referred to Sen. Green as a jealous woman and a cancer. Palin, who knows full well Lyda Green is a cancer survivor, didn't do what any decent person would do, say, "Bob, that's going too far."
But as the conversation moved on, Lester intensified his attack on Green.

Lester questioned Green's motherhood, asking Palin if the senator cares about her own kids. Palin laughs.

Then Lester clearly sets the stage for what he is about to say by warning his large audience and Palin. He says, "Governor you can't say this but I will, Lyda Green is a cancer and a b----." Palin laughs for the second time.

What were teenage boys thinking when they heard the governor laugh at someone being called a b----? How about the teenage girls who look up to Palin. What did they think when they heard her laugh?

But there is more. Lester then describes Green's chair as big and cushy. A clear reference to the senator's weight. Palin laughs a third time. She's just having a grand old time.

Palin was clearly enjoying every second of Lester's vicious attack on her political rival.

Maybe the McCain camp was worried about holding onto Alaska's 3 electoral votes?

This freakin' lady has got some issues. Wether this is much to do about nothing is irrelevent. This pick should've been kicked to the curb a long time ago. How she was even still in consideration at the time when she got the nod is mindboggling.

I don't like Palin because she's too damn conservative, doesn't have enough experience to be president and doesn't inspire any confidence in me that she could run our country.

I'm going to have to say i can't vote for McCain now.

How can McCain legitimately say in campainging that Obama is a bad choice based on experience. When he just selected a virtual rookie to be his VP. I just think this was a horrid move by McCain.

A rookie who, given McCain's age and health, is just a couple of VERY faint heartbeats away from the presidency.

I'm sure there are some out there who read about Palin's desire to put creationism in every school in America and outlaw abortion in all cases, and they want her at the top of the ticket.

The prospect of Palin a heartbeat away from the presidency going into November is good for conservatives?

How?

HAHAHAHA no it doesn't anymore. The VP is a very powerful role now days. It looks like many McCain supporters are just as clueless about the VP role as Palin herself.

"The Perfect Republican Ticket"

The Republicans have long been the party of Hypocrisy and Irony, and this year is exemplary!

The Republicans have a veteran who's against veteran's benefits, and they've added a woman who's against a woman's right to choose.

Do they do this on purpose?

She's also with McCain that there shouldn't be legislation to ensure equal pay for equal work.

You can defend being pro-life on moral grounds (though to oppose abortion for rape and incest victims is pretty damn immoral if you ask me), but equal pay for equal work? The hell?

Maybe that is why McCain chose her, part of his budget is that we pay the VP only 60% of previous salaries.
