I keep picturing what would happen if I was doing donuts in my car with 1 lugnut on each wheel.

And also that episode of the simpsons where homer makes the springfield kicker blow out his knee, and then he kicks anyways and his leg tears off.

guy is crazy is you ask me - they say he's playing for a couple of million?

But what he's obviously not thinking about is the fact that he's putting all of his future earnings at risk; an amount that would no doubt far exceed what he could earn this year.

Also, he has to make 12 sacks to reach his maximum escalator - there is no way he does that this year carrying that injury imo

The injury wont affect his straight ahead speed.

Only side to side, maybe he goes for 10 sacks or more then tells SD to give him a big contract.

So then make sure someone is at least chipping him all day. Don't LB's need to go side to side to follow a play or cut?

How is he going to do anything than blitz?

Just rush the passer I guess.

Maybe they only use him on passing downs.

He'll be in soon to let us know that with Merriman's injury, he'll be lucky to live through the end of the month. Also, Dumervil's broken pinky will severely limit the use of his entire arm for the rest of the year... may be career ending.

If I am the Chargers I tell him he is playing out the rest of rookie deal if he wants a new contract halfway through the season.

There is NO reason in the world to give a guy a deal in the 70 mill dollar area with 30 million guaranteed if his knee is going to explode into a million pieces in year 1. He still has 2 years left uncluding this one and if the CBA expires I don't even think he qualifies for UFA because he would only have 5 seasons if I am not wrong. The Chargers have ALL the cards right now.

The smart thing to do career wise would be to take the surgery, come back next year and lay down the law, because you know if he is healthy and going into RFA he will get an offer sheet if they don't give him a deal.

The more I think about this the more stupid it becomes. I can't believe Charger fans think this is cool. Four doctors all told him the same thing and he basically blew it off. If he blows his knee out and thinks the organization is going to reward him anyway for laying it on line for them, he is going to become a cautionary tale to every player in the league for the rest of the NFL.

It's funny how many of you 'tards are cheering for an injury. Classy. FTR, he's reiterated time and again that there is no threat to his career by playing, yet the main-stream media continues to report he's putting himself at future risk. In fact, doctors told him he coudln't do any further "long term" damage, but reccommend he have surgery, basically because it's going to be needed sooner or later...

Personally, I have mixed reactions to his decision. I admire his enthusiasm for the game and his team. But, if he does end up getting knocked out mid-season, I see his move as actually hurting us by taking a roster spot now. And of course how well he plays has to factor into the whole equation.

Wow, why dont you cry about it. Its nice that you can even come over to our board, when I try to go onto Chugger boards they kick me off without even posting comments. Its a division rival that you have finally been able to pull away for a few years. We definately are not going to hope he has a good year. Call it whatever you want......

majik, i am just commenting on your FF team where you have a Charger and a Chief on it. Horrible! This is why I dont play for money and if I do auto draft a division rival, I dump him or trade him. No way I root on a division rival team. Best to choose Broncos and only NFC teams (and sit out if they play the Broncos).

I never wish injury on another player.

however, If Rivers and Merriman happened to get there knees theismaned I would dance the jig over there crying faces. I would print pictures of the actual career ending event and wallpaper my house ray finkle style.

I would make a giant flag and hang it off the side of my car and drive through the streets of san diego laughing through a bullhorn.

I would sneak into the recovery rooms at the hospital where both where sleeping and kathy bates there feet misery style...

I would befriend the pa guy at qaulcomm, and at the most inoppurtune time, when the charger's game is on the line.. I would upload the videos of the leg snapping on the jumbotron with the blinking words "god hates bandwagon fans" over and over

I think he gets a bankroll regardless. And it very well may not be with the Bolts, but if the turds are willing to shell out mega-deals for players like Javon Walker, Merriman is going to hit the jackpot, regardless of how he plays closing out his contract. Everybody loves potential.

Possibly true, but Merriman doesn´t seem to agree. The only explanation I have for this is that he DESPERATELY wants or maybe even needs that 2nd contract next summer.

The logical thing to do from a player´s standpoint would be to have surgery now, sit out the year and prove yourself when you´re hopefully perfectly healthy in 09. He´s taking a risk that could possibly end his career.

Logical question: Why would 4 doctors recommend surgery if he can play just fine and risks no long term damage? I have never met a doctor who would advice a patient to have unnecessary surgery.

Logical answer: Merriman either risks long term damage to his knee by playing or he will be limited in his performance.

Logical consequence: If Merriman plays well below par, he is costing his team a chance of going to the big game and himself a chance to cash it in big time. If he risks long term damage, he is costing his team a chance to compete in future and a risk of cashing in big time.

So it follows that Merriman is an eediot who, maybe due to brain damage from repeated knocks to the head and/or steroid use, is gambling with his own and his teams ability to be competitive.

I don't wish an injury on him, but seeing as how he is already pretty severely injured, I would wish he would do the smart thing and do something about it. There is a reason the life-expectancy of NFL players is well below the national average, and things like this is definitely one of the main factors. I think what he should do is get on the horn, call up Elway and ask how it feels to get your knees replaced before you turn 50.
