I would appreciate any help.
Recently have been in some discussions with some people, again, accusing the Broncos of 'cheating the cap.' Thus attempting to put us in the same catagory as the NE Patriots.
I know I know... same ol' crap
But I remember seeing some very interesting articles and explanations as to wha t the broncos were really fined for..... deferred funds. Can someone lead me to a link, an article, or some information that I may be able to print off?

This link helps explain what happened.

From the article.
"John Elway and Terrell Davis accepted deferred payments in those seasons (1996-1998), “deferred” of course meaning “delayed or put off.” The money they were owed wasn’t to be paid until later, with interest. In fact, the now-infamous Washington Post article (linked above) made it clear that this WAS NOT intended to circumvent the salary cap in order to get better players or avoid cutting anyone, but in order to help the Broncos organization during a money-tight period while the new stadium was being built.
“These agreements were plainly designed to help the club cope with seasonal cash flow problems exacerbated by the Broncos’ need to fund front-end expenditures associated with development of the new stadium in Denver.”
The Broncos had to put up around $100 million toward the new stadium, and that was a struggle for the franchise. They basically went into The Bank of Elway and Davis and took out a loan. They weren’t trying to squeeze cap room for their championship run. By all accounts, that money still counted against the cap. They weren’t trying to cheat the sport itself."

Basically it was a way to pay out players that wasn't approved. It was for two guys already on the books and didn't free up any more room on the cap than had they paid them the old fashioned way. The cap number never changed, so that's why no one can say they gained a competitive advantage. It's just that the method of payment was not approved.

No, deferring funds is a legit way to pay players, it was in the last CBA because I pointed out the exact section to a Raider fan on this board a couple years ago. I'm guessing it's in the current CBA too. The problem with what the Broncos did was that they didn't pay TD, Elway, and Sharpe (he was owed very little so he's often never mentioned) when the league believed they should have. They were fined about $950k, which was the league deemed Bowlen made in extra interest by paying late, as well as the pick.

It sounds like you said "No, paying players late is ok. It's in the CBA. The problem is the Broncos paid their players late."???
Please elaborate.

Later than the players and club originally agreed.
I don't know how accurate Herc is with all of that, though. I've never heard it was approved to defer payments anywhere, and the WaPo article indicated it was closer to $3 million in penalties, if memory serves me.
It's cool being used as a reference though. :pimp:
