Soreness prompts Merriman to have knee examined
Associated Press
Updated: August 21, 2008, 12:05 AM ET
SAN DIEGO -- Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman had his knee examined Wednesday in Alabama after lingering soreness kept him out of practice for more than a week.
Merriman underwent surgery to repair cartilage damage five months ago but has had persistent pain in the knee during training camp. He traveled to Birmingham to have the knee looked at by Dr. James Andrews, the surgeon who performed the operation.
"I think he wants to make sure he gets it checked out and make sure everything is all right with it," San Diego coach Norv Turner said after Wednesday's practice. "When he's been able to practice and move around, he's looked awfully good to me."
Merriman hasn't practiced this week and didn't play in a preseason loss Saturday to the St. Louis Rams. He missed three consecutive practices last week because of the sore knee and an illness he described as strep throat and fever.
Turner didn't express significant concern and he's hoping Merriman will be healthy by Sept. 7 when the Chargers open the regular season against the Carolina Panthers.
"I think we have a number of guys that are in that category who have some soreness, and my concern will be if it lingers," Turner said. "Hopefully, it won't linger and hopefully in the next week to 10 days, he's going to be all right and ready to get going."
Pro Bowl tight end Antonio Gates didn't practice Wednesday, one day after passing a physical and being taken off the physically unable to perform list. Gates had surgery six months ago to repair a tear in the plantar plate of his left foot.
"Obviously, this injury is one of those things you have to kind of handle daily," Gates said. "I continue to monitor it because ideally I want to be at full strength come the opener."

MERRIMAN VISITS DR. ANDREWS (http://www.profootballtalk.com/2008/08/20/merriman-visits-dr-andrews/)

Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman hasn’t had a good off-season.
Merriman had his Mercedes torched (http://www.profootballtalk.com/2008/03/25/lights-out-for-merrimans-mercedes/comment-page-1/) in March, he had to shoot down rumors of a suspension (http://www.profootballtalk.com/2008/04/25/merriman-denies-rumors-of-suspension/) in April and he had strep throat and a fever (http://www.kfvs12.com/Global/story.asp?S=8845961&nav=menu51_4) at the start of the preseason.
And now he’s suffering from what is described as “persistent knee pain,” and he needs to see Dr. James Andrews about it.
The North County Times reports that Merriman missed two more practices (http://www.nctimes.com/articles/2008/08/20/sports/chargers/zfcf205a4d310a953882574ab000d1f6d.txt)Tuesday as he traveled to Andrews’ offices in Alabama, and isn’t expected back to Chargers Park until Thursday. Andrews repaired cartilage damage in Merriman’s left knee five months ago, and the Chargers are describing this as a “follow-up exam.”
In other Chargers injury news, tight end Antonio Gates was taken off the Physically Unable to Perform list and participated in practice. Defensive end Luis Castillo is still hurting with a back injury, but he got his most extensive work in two weeks and says he’d be playing if this were the regular season.
http://www.profootballtalk.com/category/rumor-mill/
And who knows how bad LT's knee really is cause he doesnt play in regular season games, plus his "secret" boyfriend Phylis Rivers hasnt exactly "lit it up" in Preseason. Seems Norv isnt exactly sold on his bill of health either.

Yeah, I'm sure Merriman is juicing regularly when he's being tested 25+ times a year...

I personally am shocked and dismayed that the steroids thing was brought up in this thread. I apologize for my fellow Bronco fans. I hope you know that I never mentioned them.
Honestly, the steroid angle never crossed my mind.

I admit, i have posted a lot saying WE ARE GOING TO WIN THE DIVISION, but that is because i truly believe it, not because i am trying to piss off bandwagon fans of the Chargers.
Denver has the BEST QB in the AFC West so that adds in favor of Denver.
Denver has the best receiving corps in the AFC West
Right there that gives Denver the chance to score and keep up with the Chargers on offense. Now here is where Denver gets a win against the Chargers. Denver has a better pair of DB's than the Chargers. Meaning when the front 7 stops LT, Rivers will be counted on to try and lead an aeriel attack on Champ and Bly. Whereas Cutler only needs to avoid Cromartie.
Also, i think the Chargers and LT especially are going to miss Michael Turner and Lorenzo Neal a lot more than they think.

Have him play like Robertson, with pain...S.D. has some serios injuries. Beside Merryman, Gates, Rivers have injure. Gates toe is likely chronic.

Thats just it. He isn't juicing regularly anymore. The body tends to break down after that. But wait those were "tainted" supplements and he had proof he was going to show everyone, but never did.
You guys have a shot at winning it all if you can stay healthy though. While this is relatively minor its not a great start!

Plus Tomlinson may be starting to show some tread on the tires without Turner as a backup. Their injury situation is definitely something to think about. Im not banking on them having injuries nor am I glad theyre injured but it is what it is. Some combination of the guys mentioned could definitely hurt them.

Its more likely the primitive form of Growth Hormone he used back then not steroids. They are totally different although almost always lumped together in the media.

WHISPERS BEGIN REGARDING MERRIMAN’S CONDITION (http://www.profootballtalk.com/2008/08/21/whispers-begin-regarding-merrimans-condition/)
Posted by Mike Florio on August 21, 2008, 12:22 p.m.
In the wake of a report that Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman visited with renowned orthopedist James Andrews (http://www.profootballtalk.com/2008/08/20/merriman-visits-dr-andrews/)regarding Merriman’s knee, we’re hearing that there is quiet concern within the organization that Merriman could be done, after only four NFL (http://www.profootballtalk.com/category/rumor-mill/#) seasons.
Merriman had arthroscopic knee surgery during the offseason. He made the trip to Alabama to see Dr. Andrews because of persistent pain in the knee. (Curiously, there’s a conflict between the two major San Diego papers regarding the identity of the doctor who performed the procedure. The North County Times says that it was Andrews (http://www.nctimes.com/articles/2008/08/21/sports/chargers/z1dbf7559be624b20882574ac0014cdf5.txt). The Union-Tribune claims that it was team physician David Chao (http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports/chargers/20080821-9999-1s21chnotes.html).)
Officially, coach Norv Turner says he isn’t worried. “My concern will be if it lingers (http://www.nctimes.com/articles/2008/08/21/sports/chargers/z1dbf7559be624b20882574ac0014cdf5.txt),” Turner said Wednesday. “Hopefully, it won’t linger and hopefully in the next week to 10 days, he’s going to be all right and ready to get going.”
As we hear it, there’s already concern, behind the scenes. Nothing may come of it, and Merriman might end up being fine. But the team is definitely worried about the possibility that Merriman could be done.
“He’s had some soreness,” Turner said. “I think he wants to make sure he gets it checked out and make sure everything is all right with it. When he’s been able to practice and move around, he’s looked awfully good to me.”
There’s no denying that Merriman is awfully good. But, like most athletes, it’s hard to do much of anything with a bum knee.
