This is easier said than done. DJ is an OLB in a 4-3 scheme. I don't have the number offhand, but go and look up how many 4-3 OLB's make the Pro Bowl. Very few in the last 5-6 years.

We have been drafting better lately though

It seems our drafting has improved a lot since 2004. And I think this year's draft could turn out to be a real good one like the 06 draft.

With the exception of the Jarvis Moss pick(hopefully Shanny learned his lesson), I have been satisfied with our recent drats.

2005 NFL Draft. We trade our #1 to the Skins for their 2005 #3, 2006#1, and 2006#4.

Basically with a little more maneuvering through Atlanta and St. Louis we gave up Jason Campbell, Claude Wroten, and some other scrub for Jay Cutler, Brandon Marshall and Karl Paymah.

Yeah and at least we often get value for our "busts." The Bailey Portis trade gave us Tatum Bell who we used with Foster for Dre Bly. Basically with that free pick, we have arguably the best CB tandem in the league for Portis and Foster.

Plus, we used the Deltha O'Neil trade with Cincinnati to move up to get DJ.

I'd love to sit down with Sundquist.

Me: So there's been a lot of bad selections over the years. Did this cause your termination from the front office?

Sundquist: No. Those picks weren't mine. I wanted to pick other, better players but Shanahan wouldn't let me.

Me: So do you think it was over the bad free agents the Broncos brought in? A lot of money was given to players for a minimal amount of production.

Sundquist: No. That was all Shanahan too. Shanahan brought all those guys in.

Me: Well then surely they feel you are at least partly to blame for the things that have happened to the team.

Sundquist: Hey, I wanted them to let Jake play out the season! I was upset about him getting benched. You can read it in Fatsis' book.

Me: Ted, you didn't help with the draft. You didn't help in free agency. However you did want to keep a lame duck QB starting. Ted, what exactly did you do for the Broncos?

Sundquist: I uh...well...DRAFT BUSTAHAN!!!!!

Me: I'm sorry?

Sundquist: Mikey Mansion fired ME! I will have my revenge! Florio and I will fill cyberspace with slander until he is ruined! DRAFT BUSTOHANNN!!!!!!

Me: It all makes sense now.

First, you don't draft for need.

1998 - our tackles were getting old, why not draft their eventual replacement?

2000 - I only included Janikowski because he was drafted right after Deltha, lol

2004 - what is the love with DJ? He hasn't proved squat, while Jackson, Smith and Wilfork are all Pro Bowlers

2002 - BUT ED REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

You don't draft to your teams need? Then what exactly do you draft for? Shanny isn't a "in the future" coach he wants to win now. That's why they drafted who they did. The players they thought they needed to win another SB.

Please you lose any credibility when you say you don't draft for need.

My DVR recorded the 2007 Broncos yearbook. It's amazing what you can do with editing. Add some upbeat music, fireworks over Invesco field, and 10 sec clips of the offense with 1/2 sec clips of the defense, the broncos look really good.

They ended up showing a couple of the Cutler option plays and him running downfield to throw a block or two. As fun as that was, I really hope Shanny decides not to do that again. Those games saving drives and Scheffler/Marshall highlights do have me excited for the season to start.!Booya!

No, drafting for need causes you to sometime take a guy higher than he should be taken while a better player at a different position is available.
49ers drafted for need, taking a QB #1 overall a few years back. How did that turn out?
I'm in the belief you take the best available player.

And in 2000 we shouldve drafted Brady so that way we wouldn't have put up with Griese for that long, we would't have signed Jake, and we wouldn't have used draft picks to trade up for Cutler.

Every year there is someone later in the draft that turns out to be better. There is no point of looking back at what might have been. Plus it also depends on how people fit into a specific system.

But having Brady and Ed Reed plus Shanahan equal championship OMGROFL LEEEEEE333333T!!!!!!!!!!!! ::)

So by your drafting standards if we in the next draft have a QB that is the best available player and Cutler has had a banner year do you still take him? The answer of course is...no that would be a waste of a pick. You take the [B]best available player[B]at the position you need them at. Right now unless there is a dramatic improvement in the D-line we would be looking for the best available DT in the draft (and that can apply to any other position that we are lacking in).

Of course there are some guidelines, like QB position.
However, we are a team that took Clinton Portis in round 2 when we had Terrell Davis, Mike Anderson and Olandis Gary on our roster. Was that drafting for best available at a position of need? No, that was drafting best available player, period.
You are sort of right in drafting best available at a position of need, but you can't just narrow that down. Thats how we get the busts. Thats why we have so many CB busts, because we drafted best available at a position of need.

You want an ultimate (and very realistic) "What could have been"?

In 2005 the 49ers *could have* taken Braylen Edwards with the first pick of the draft (instead of Alex Smith).

In 2006 the 49ers then *could have* taken Jay Cutler with their first pick (instead of Vernon Davis).

If the Niners right now had Cutler/Edwards instead of A. Smith/VD....they'd be a legitimate contender in the NFC.

Oops.
