From the "Audibles" section of the latest issue of Pro Football Weekly:
The following quotes are from NFL scouts, coaches, and front office personnel, speaking on a condition of anonymity:
"...Ryan Torain looked real impressive before he got hurt, but the surprise has been on the offensive line. Clady has played well, and Ryan Harris has stood out. He's tough. He has been burying defenders. The Broncos got him at a great price ('07 third round)."

I've had rising hopes on Harris ever since Kupes dad told us that Kuper called Ryan Harris "The real deal at Tackle."

Yeah, despite all the reports on this board about the Houston game I thought Harris was pretty good for his first game. I was surprised at his size, too.

he also seems much stronger than his reputation led us to believe coming out of college. Back Surgery must have done him well.

The way Harris and Clady played against Dallas gets me really excited. They have a ligitimate defense and they didn't allow a sack, that to me is surprising. I think we've found our tackles for the next 8+ years

If we can get the OL working at a high level, it could be the key to a very good year!

He had a really bad practice when I went the first Saturday. John Engleberger was beating him like a drum in pass rushing situations. He looked much better the Saturday after.
he also seems much stronger than his reputation led us to believe coming out of college. Back Surgery must have done him well.
The big problem with Harris has always been his back. As a Junior he looked like a potential top 10 pick stud LT. That was him playing at ~305 pounds and healthy.
Unlike a lot of OLs (ex. Holland) when Harris gets hurt or is laid up for a time he loses weight. When he screwed his back up leading into his senior season he lost a lot of weight and a lot of ND insiders were saying that he was under 280 pounds. Try to wrap your mind around that. A starting LT for a premier collegiate program not even breaking 280.
He managed to add pounds for the combine but it was clear his strength hadn't returned. Not too long into our pre-season it was clear he needed surgery to truly get his back right. He then had pretty much the whole season to recondition his body to the NFL level.
When healthy and at a good OL weight he's a monster. He was pretty much the only NFL level talent on ND's line while he was there and they were an premier passing offense because Weiss moved him all around the field, having him do everything an OL can do to keep him on the opposing team's best pass rushers. He understands the game and is fundamentally solid. He just needs to stay healthy and shake the rust off while acclimating himself to NFL levels of physicality.
There are still questions but I have little doubt that he's already a notable upgrade over Pears at RT.

IMO, the cowboys don't have that great of a defense...their defense is the reason the stumbled down the stretch.
but back to the broncos. It was nice to see the broncos push them around and all three phases showed good tempo for 60 minutes.

i'm not going to sit here and say that i knew Harris would be outstanding. I knew after sitting out an entire year that he would be rusty. As far as i know, he could be another Foster. I'm just ecstatic that that we might have to legit tackles.

I've been a Broncos fan forever, and since I could first remember this is how it works being a Broncos fan. It wasn't invented with the Mane, it was invented when the Denver Bears Stadium (later to be named Mile High) was first built on the city dump and a rag tag group of people started playing football there. Ok, I don't know if it started that far back, but it was definitely apparent in the 80s when many fans were calling for Kubiak over Elway, and in the mid-90s when fans were questioning the abilities of a 6th round running back... and the tradition lives of calling out the players we'll come to love or forget!
During the Houstons game, Harris, I believe, had 4 penalties on him alone. Thats a lot. And thats worthy of fans getting irritated.

Don't reserve this right for the Mane. Feel free to add every single internet forum relating to sports, science, medicine, religion, politics, finances. It's a pretty sad commentary on society.
As to the topic at hand, in my opinion, Harris played poorly in the Houston game. Not only the penalties, but I saw him get manhandled on a few plays. However, it was his first game. He played much better against Dallas and should continue to improve if his back holds up.

This is AWESOME! I'm stoked he's kicking butt ... looks like we're gonna have our most powerful line in years. I had been thinking Harris was just babysitting until Kuper could slide over and make room for a slimmer Holland. Isn't it funny that now ur best lineman last year has been demoted, and yet we still have our best line in years? Harris' progress is especially a good thing in that Pears might be headed for IR.
Just curious ... where were all you Ryan Harris "I-told-you-so" types before the draft? Over and over again I was propping Harris to urge we not draft Clady-Williams-Otah, and instead use the pick on defense. As I recall, nobody but nobody had anything nice to say about Harris then ???

So, who would we have taken if not Clady? Out of the remaining picks, exactly 3 weren't offensive or CB picks. And those 3 were at the end of the 1st round.
Plus, I have my doubts about Harris being able to play as a franchise LT. So, who is our LT this year, and for the future? Kuper? I don't think so.
We needed a bookend, stud LT and we got one(hopefully, anyways).

Most of the Mane was beating Harris like a drum after the Houston game just because of his 4 penalties. Calling him a bust and saying Denver needed to go get someone else or that Kuper needed to play out there. Basically a typical Orangemane over reaction.
I even called these people out back then and of course...... I was right.

Buff, don't go pulling the train out of the station and leaving the conductor behind at the platform now.
I've been a fan of Harris since he was playing for ND. Combine reports and the back surgery last year scared me but I've said all along, get him healthy enough to be a legitimate 300-310 pound OT and we'll have ourselves a good, maybe even great, football player.
Before the draft I'd predicted that Shanahan would stick with a Pears/Harris/Kuper trio competing at OT but it wasn't something I liked and I'm very pleased to see him being aggressive with rebuilding the OL by adding Clady.
At this point we have the kind of young OL depth that should take care of our franchise QB for years to come, and as long as he stays healthy Harris will be a big part of that.

aggreed i he played up agaisnt mario williams on a couple of plays. i was pretty impressed i knew that the penalties agasint him where mental mistakes and most likely could be corrected. other than that i am pretty happy with our line. except for center and mainly becauise of age. i really like Alex Mack, C, Cal but he is more of a power game Center but Max Unger, OT Ore. i think might be our best fit it is said he can play center and is probably the better pick for a ZBS... to me it seems we are going to a more power O drop back style.

He had more than those penalties, though. There were a few plays he got lit up. It's still too early to say one way or the other, but the showing he put up, especially in the run game, was impressive against the Dallas first team. He had a reputation of being a finesse player and he was mauling people. Our line looks night and day different than last year.

Actually, you're right ... the two DTs were gone before 12, the #1 safety Phillips wasn't worth a 12, we had just signed Boss and Niko, and we were pretty much loaded with CBs and DEs. I'm definitely glad we got Clady, I just remember everybody forgetting about Harris.

A better Oline will make the D line better. If the O controls clock and keeps our D off the field the D is upgraded.
I do think we will be throwing more which has my hopes for clock control in toilet.

If Holland takes back RG what do we do with Kuper?
Kuper if he got beat out is still a versatile guy who can play both tackle and guard. He looked a lot better in the Dallas game so maybe Holland doesn't get his spot back.
So, who would we have taken if not Clady?
Why, a franchise running back of course. Everyone knows we are only a franchise running back away from the superbowl. In fact, we should draft a franchise running back at the top of the first round every year!

Even more so, many people did not want to draft an OL with the No. 1 or 2. I think if Harris turns out to be very good, having Clady along with the other young guys will solidfy the future for the Denver offense both in the running game which has been in decline and in enabling Cutler to be all he can be. The future success of the Denver Broncos has its foundation in the trenches both offensively and defensively. It is still a little early to project the future on one preseason game with little meaning except to not get anyone hurt.

It's true, as TexanBob suggests, that the real bullets haven't started flying yet. Nonetheless, it is hard not to pleased at the progress of the OTs. This was unquestionably one of the two biggest areas of concern this offseason (along with DT) and it might have been No. 1. I think Rick Dennison deserves some real credit here. He's not a popular figure around here for a number of reasons, but, based on what we have seen so far, he's done a very nice job this summer with OTAs and camps with his OTs. He's been given a difficult task: Get a real rookie ready to start on opening day at the difficult LT position and get a virtual rookie to start at RT (where he has not played before). The transition has been almost seamless with Clady. Our reporters have uniformly reported that Clady has had a very consistent and at multiple times, outstanding camp and outside of a rough first quarter against Super Mario, he's done well in the preseason games. Against Dallas, he more than held his own against Demarcus Ware. That's no small achievement for a rookie OT, even for a first round rookie OT.
Dennison's work with Harris might be more impressive, as it suggests that a great deal of intense (and effective) coaching has been done in such a short period of time, from the start of camp when he apparently couldnt block Bob's Mom to where he's cutting down on penalties, showing some skill in run blocking and even getting props from PFW. That's alot of progress in just three weeks time, the coaching must have been really effective, because that's really a meteoric-type rise in play. This reminds me of 2004 I think, when we had that great experiment with moving Lepsis to LT and it started out very rough in that first preseason game against Washington (and to a slighter lesser extent in the Buffalo preseason game), but by the time the season started, Dennison had him playing well at LT and ofcourse, he became one of the better LTs in the NFL during his final four seasons.
I am very, very concerned, however, about our backup OT situation. I haven't seen this brought up much if at all and I'm not sure why you folks haven't brought it up. A casual glance at the roster reveals that the only other OTs likely to make the team are Tyler Polumbus, an UDFA rookie and Erik Pears. Pears' struggles are well documented, but to think for a moment that among all our OTs, he's the ONLY one to have started and played in a full NFL regular season game. Think about that. There's a further problem. According to Kuper's dad, Pears is having some serious injury issues and might get put on the (real) IR. Does this mean that our only backup OT is going to be an UDFA rookie? The team should have brought in a veteran OT weeks ago. I am very concerned right now about the depth at this spot. There's literally zero depth. We might then be the only team in the league to have not had a single one of our OTs, starter or backup, start an NFL game. And our starters, while (very) promising, are undoubtedly going to hit some rough patches. It's inevitable in the trial by fire process. We wont be able to get a vet in there or do anything about it if it becomes an extended problem.

Just because this is a thread about o-linemen... I talked to Paul Howard today at the local watering hole. Great guy.
I remember Paul Howard visiting my elementary school on the western slope back in the 70s and handing out an official Broncos helmet. Made a huge impression on a bunch of small town kids. Great guy.

Yeah, that's about the size of it. Add some Title banners to Mile High, then I'll be impressed. I'm tired of talking a good season.

Just to refute Kaylore, I actually thought that Harris had a pretty good game against Houston outside of the penalty's. You can't just clear those away but he did very well against a pro bowl DE.
I've been the first one to admit I was highly critical of the pick. I wasn't so much when he got drafted, more so after he went down with back surgery last preseason and it was leaked that he had another back operation at ND.
I abused Harris's name last year, I implored the staff to draft a OT early this past draft and thankfully they did. Now Harris is proving me wrong from last season and it looks like we have to studs sitting out on the corners of our line. They'll be some growing pains this season as they are both basically rookies but things are looking up on the OL. We do need more depth at Socal pointed out.

Has Bob somehow snuck into your place of residence and touched it?

Thanks BPC, I remembered the dislike of the pick...

He was a great. Somewhere on DVD I got him being interviewed from his hospital bed as he watched the Broncos win a playoff game without him and then go to the 1986 Superbowl. That was his last year in football. It's a shame he was able to participate in any of those games.

Good observation. I have a hard time believing they won't be scouring the "cut lists" in the next few weeks and will make OT the #1 priority. Depth really doesn't seem to be a problem anywhere else.....certainly not to this extent.

Well, Kuper and Pears are definatley quality backups. Whether Kupe will be moved to OT or Pears will be healthy enough is another question.
I think Holland will regain his starting spot at some point and Kuper will be a valuable backup at both OT and OG.

Yeah. Especially since Dexter Manley murdered Keith Kartz in that superbowl.
