The 2007 Denver Broncos season was over with a loss to the Houston Texans in Week 15 and a win by the San Diego Chargers knocking our Broncos out of playoff contention, marking the second year in a row they failed to make the playoffs. The Broncos' 7-9 record was the worst since 1999 (The year we lost TD's knees) their last losing season - 6-10.
After watching the first two preseason games we look good and I have to say, I'm stoked! We're young, learning, but full of desire on this team! That said, there is one glaring issue missing from this team that needs to be addressed before hitting the season.
I remember a famous quote (not sure who the author is):
“The minute you settle for less than you deserve, you get even less than you settled for.”
So, how hard is it for this squad to close out a game? Our prototypical offense arrived on time Saturday night when we rushed out to our usual lead. First drive was near picture perfect - offense was looking superb. Next drive looked like a sloppy train wreck - horrid - we we satisfied, who cared to continue the momentum? All in all....we got quite a few lucky breaks in the game!
Taking a look back at last season...we settled far too often and ended up with even less than we thought was possible:
2007 Season:
Week 1
Score at the half 7-6 Denver
Final Score 15-14 Denver
Week 2
Score at the half 17-3 Denver
Final Score 23-30 Denver
Week 4
Score at the half 13-14 Colts
Final Score 38-20 Colts
Week 7
Score at the half 21-7 Broncos
Final Score 31-28 Broncos
Week 8
Score at the half 13-7 Packers
*** We should have won this game but ended up losing in OT 19-13
Week 12
Score at the half 13-6 Broncos
Final Score 37-34 Bears
Week 15
Score at the half 6-10 Texans
Final Score 31-13 Texans
Week 17
Score at the half: 14-3 Broncos
Final Score 22-19 Denver beats Vikings last second FG
Weeks: 11, 14
Score at the half: 10-20 (11) and 24-7 (14)
Final Scores 34-20 v Titans and 41-7 v Chiefs
* WE FINALLY CLOSE OUT 2 GAMES!
The Broncos seem to consistently 'shut down' after getting the early lead and are all to satisfied with squeaking out a win. How many games did we 'let the opponent back' into the game last season?
I hope Jay can really grab the concept of never stopping - never settling - never satisfied and always pushing his squad down the field for more, more, more. The first series last Saturday, on Offense, was remarkable and then second was as sloppy as ever seen in Mile High. Oline was gross.
This 'young' team is getting younger each week it seems as those with true desire rise to the top. I don't want to see 1/2 of a football game this season....nor, do I want my team 'coasting' along through the season. If we are favored to win, we should win soundly with good solid performance.
I'd rather see a knee at the end of the game than a last second FG hoping that we squeak out a win against a sub-par opponent. While our morale and true confidence flat lines. There is no strength of heart in one's self and one's team when victory is built on inconsistent and erradic performances.
In short, Jay needs to push this team...push it harder and harder each week and the defense needs someone to step up and do the same! Someone needs to verbally kick their azz kicked if they miss a block or a tackle....Jay and DJ should be the ones to do it!
......oh, and can we PUHHHLEEEEZ get a decent MLB!
