View Full Version : Andre Hall should be starting

I can not figure out why is Selvin Young the top guy on the depth chart. He played like **** tonight. Every time he got a hand off, he immediately started up the middle and then broke it outside, and then went down easy. Andre Hall on the other hand showed power out there. He took handoffs and had good vision, found the opening and when he got hit, didn't go down easy. He kept his legs moving and fought for extra yards and fell forward.
He looks like he should be the starting RB and Selvin should be brought in as a change of pace.

I think Young sold it for me when he took a handoff outside, STOPPED for a second, a dead stop too, and then tried to go back outside again.
Seriously, don't hesitate, one cut and go.
Hall needs to be the starter IMO after this week.

Seems like every time Hall gets carries, he does something good. And to be honest, he's not really an undersized back -- I believe he's something like 210-215 pounds, with ginormous thighs a la Maurice Jones-Drew.
Short, yes, but not small.

I'll differ to Bobby Turner on this, but I'm sure both will have big impacts during the season.

exactly what i am thinking. he is like 5'10" and 215lbs that is decent size for a RB and his legs are huge, he runs close to the ground and is a pain in the ass to bring down just like MJD

I've been banging the drum for Hall since I first saw him get touches last year.
The guy is a lightning rod. He's absolutely the most explosive back on the roster.
That said, as much as I love him as a weapon... I don't see him as an every-down back. I'm also not thrilled with Young, but I think he's versatile enough to carry 20 times... and catch a few balls.
It was a little disappointing to see Torian go down. You wonder how that would have worked out.
In any case, I think if blocking holds up... we'll be able to move the ball on the ground. We just won't have a TD/Portis type. We may not even have a Mike Anderson type. It'll be purely RBC in Denver this year. No question.

The coaches will make the proper decision on who the starter will be. Shanny and Turner have never been afraid to start who has shown to be the better back at the end of training camp/preseason.

Can you imagine what this offense would look like if we had the explosive TD/Portis type RB? Hopefully the guys solidify this year and next year we get the stud back we've been needing to carry this team. Hall is a great kid and a nice change of pace guy. Our franchise back comes next year IMO.

i hope we get our franchise RB in the draft next season, been hoping for one since we traded Portis. After a stud left tackle to block his blind side a young QB needs a good RB to take some pressure off. Plus with a legitimate badass RB the offense could become incredibly explosive

I think you're right. Shanahan got his toys for Cutler to throw to this year... next year he'll use a 1st day pick on a back. (Provided he's still around, which I think he will be as long as the team improves to any extent.)

i am going to wait on answering that until the end of the season. I have only wanted a MLB since about week 10 last year til now and have not completely given up on Niko as the MLB, whereas i have wanted a badass RB since Portis was traded. As of right now i say RB, but i want the right to change my answer on that based on MLB play this season.

I don't know who should be the starter. I would pick Young because the O-line is new in a bunch of places. The simple truth is we don't know how that really impacts the running game in preseason thus far.

Yes, and word here in St. Louis is that he doesn't plan to report until week 6, the last week he can show and accrue the year of service to end his contract.
He'll be expensive though. He wants top 5 RB money.

Based on last nights game Hall should start. Young was hesitant and
didn't play well.
but every game is different and it looks like RBC is the starter.

Regardless of who the starter is, they're going to get a similar number of carries over the course of the season. Young is a better receiver and better in pass protection, and I have a feeling we'll be highlighting the passing game. I think Hall is a better all-around ball carrier, but Young has a lot of versatility that Shanahan will want to utilize.

Maybe. Plus, Hall is actually faster than Selvin Young. I dont think he has the balance or vision that Young has but you may be on to something. Good post. At the very least I like the way Hall competes. He's a little straight-linish but thats not all bad as you were pointing out.

I believe Selvin is the starter for two reasons:
1) He is better at pass protection than Hall.
2) He is better out of the backfield than Hall.
Hall did appear to run the ball better than Young did last night though and after last night Im fairly certain that Hall is either going to pass Young or will be right on his heels for the starting job come opening day.
It's still pre-season and the coaches are still looking at a lot of things so we don't know who the starter is going to be.

Regardless of who starts, they're both going to play and get their opportunities. That said, I still lean towards Young at this point. I think he's more dynamic and fits a downfield passing game better than Hall.
Rock Chalk
08-17-2008, 02:31 PM
Let's face it, neither RB had much running room last night people. Selvin had only one good run, and apparently someone bitched about that run int his thread but he turned a sure loss into a 3 or 4 yard gain. Andre Hall runs hard but I dont think he is going to break games open for us. We may use Hall like Dallas used Barber last year with Young being our version of Jones. Young should based on his ability to pass protect and be a safety valve out of the backfield, but the "field" back while Hall should probably be in there in the red zone.

i wouldn't want to trade for him. he has 4 years on him already. and he only has 1 year where he has carried the ball more than 300 times. if a RB is going to get top 5 money in Denver, he has to be able to carry the ball 350 times a year.
STL is right not wanting to give him top 5 money

I rewatched the game and Hall wasn't that impressive. Young wasn't that bad but wasn't too good either. They both looked like I remembered.

Hall may lack some straight-line speed but I love how he manages to get everything he can get on every play. I remember the Bears game last year where he was just running them ragged.
Give me 4-5 yds a pop over the occasional breakaway run. We have Cutler's arm to get us the big yards.

Terrell Davis was playing special teams when the pre-season started and had had little to no chance of starting. We all know how that turned out.
Coaches learn a lot from game-action. They already know Hall can take it to the house.
Beyond that, I don't think anyone insinuated that the coaches read these boards.

I have favored Young over Hall thus far although realizing Hall has some real ability. It seemed that while watching the game that Hall did much better, but after a replay of the game and the looking at the stats. It really was a wash. I really think that our young OL hasn't quite hit their stride in run blocking thus far (absolutely happy about the pass blocking). Dallas has some real quickness down the line that stymied our running game. A little worried about the line and the run blocking but keeping my hopes up.

Since neither guy seems like a 25 carry back we are sure to see a lot of both of them this coming year. No doubt that if Hall keeps it up he is likely to slowly become the featured back. The key is the guy who can consistently get 4+ a carry not the gamebreaker.

Two quality backs. This is a good problem to have. However, my vote goes to Selvin. He's bigger, better in pass protection(He's actually very good at it), faster, and maybe a better receiver.
But whatever. As long as they produce, I don't care.

Im telling you guys, unless Hall drastically improves his pass protection ability he will not be a full time back.
Selvin is as good as any of the backs we've had in that department for a long time. He is great out of the backfield AND has proven through the course of a season to handle the job of RUNNING the ball with one of the worst O-lines in recent Denver memory.
This is not a knock on Hall by any means. The guy is a football player and will see some playing time but Im fairly certain that Young is going to be the starter come opening day. Just much better overall than Hall is at this point.

I agree that Selvin has a better feel for protecting his star QB (probably learned it @ Texas), but it's great to have AT LEAST 2 guys right off the bat that CAN move the chains AND score in a 1st and goal situation. I think our gameplan was pretty vanilla against Dallas.....I can't wait to see the dumpoff against a pass-rush w/ Selvin having a little room to operate.
A side note, I'm impressed with Marshall's recovery so far and Royal's abilities show so far. He is one fired up guy on the field.

I like the fact that we have this question/problem. Young knows the plays and has started many games last year when Henry went down. Hall has that excitment of seeing the hole and hitting it and also spinning out of trouble. We have seen this type of running back before. The running goes as does the OLine and I thought much improved from the Houston game.

The best news for our running game has to be the improvement in the O-line this year. True they haven't opened up big holes but compared to the debacle of last season they are looking very good.

Yeah, I hate it when a back makes 4 yards out of nothing. Really gets me down on them. It was a touchdown if he went the other way, I just know it. Someone already pointed this out, but Young is the much better reciever and pass blocker, so he gets the nod. I do like Hall though, he is a little bowling ball and that can't be fun to take on.

Young and Hall are both injury prone, so we are going to need both.
